Oh God, I saw Sunsoft Batman and I had an impulse to play it again on my Genesis. One of the best ost ever made and the first stage raining scene thrill me until this day
I really love the Sunsoft Batman movie game on the Genesis, the game's short but i love it, i love the soundtrack too, especially Gotham City Streets, very retro, it's a nice short game if ur a Batman fanboy!
Thanks for the show! I very much enjoyed Batman, Jurassic Park, and Aladdin on Genesis. I also played lots of Batman Returns, Jurassic Park., Terminator, and Cliffhanger on Sega CD.
You and SNES Drunk should do a video together and talked about pros and cons for some popular ports for your own systems such as MK, SF2, Terminator vs Robocop, etc. Keep up the good work.
hahahaha, dude, I love how you just show no mercy on ripping apart some of the shittier games and their developers. and rightfully so. there is absolutely nothing worse than a half assed game made, in some cases completely broken just to take advantage of sales from innocent gamers. it's friggin insulting. if anyone who managed these companies or was a programmer for some of these terrible games, hang your head in shame.
In a lot of cases it's simply a lack of time - nobody sets out to make a bad game, but when you're forced to get the game out before the movie's release date and the budget for the project simply wasn't high enough to begin with, there's not much you can do. It's not really the developer's fault in most cases. Plus, at least for the merely mediocre titles there's still a lot of people who have fond memories of those games when they were younger, even if they pale in comparison to the best games on the system.
loving the content even though I haven't followed it from the beginning. keep it up! I may not always agree but I find a lot to like as a sega fan who grew up with the genesis (only really knew one person who had a master system, so it was all nes with friends before that and one who had an atari vcs compatible computer).
Back to the Future 3 for Genesis, I’m sorry but I got some enjoyment out of it. The first level is infuriating but I weathered the storm and was persistent. I finally beat it and nowadays I can usually beat it first time every time. It’s not that hard once you get to know the controls. Once you’re done with it, the rest of the game was more fun. Trying to get the score needed for the shooting game, and throwing the pie plates was fun to play. The last level was the funnest of all. What gave it replay value was the difficulty so I guess I just didn’t give up so easily. Definitely should have never been paid a big price for though. We got it cheap back in the day. No big deal.
Ghostbusters (Phantasy Star 2 and Altered Beast) was my first Genesis game. I really enjoyed the game and the large headed Ghostbusters. Seeing the video I remember all those scenes, played the he'll put of it. Took me forever to finish. Moonwalk was another good game surprisingly. It was beyond weird, bit that's why I liked it. It had a lot of small details, the moonwalking, variety of dances, the mech suit, etc... My favorite part was MJ tossing the coin into the Jukebox. Something about it just got me.
You mention the different sound drivers frequently in this video, but I don't know what the differences are. Maybe that's a future video topic you could cover?
I discovered Judge Dredd, Demolition Man, True Lies & Stargate well beyond the 16 Bit era and IMHO are very solid games. They all have some similarities gameplay wise but they’ve got a lot of action, exploration, music and solid sound effects. Wish I knew about these games back in the early 90’s but I was probably distracted by other AAA games back then.
There is a lot of great titles here Addams Family and Value, Dick Tracy, Batman, Aladdin, Aliens 3, Pinocchio, jungle book, ghost buster, lost world, demolition man, judge dredd, predator 2, jurrasic park 1and 2, lion king, moonwalker, Pocahontas, rambo 3, terminator and arcade, toystory, true lies, universal soldier enough here to make a great collection!
Yeah, that first Batman game from Sunsoft is beyond awsome. One of the best games on the system and one of my favorite games of all times. Also you should mention games like: Pirates of Dark Water, Tom and Jerry Frantic Antics, Silvester & Tweetty, Gargoyles, Spider-Man The Animated Series Video Game and TaleSpin.
That European exclusive Addams Family game remind me of Uncle Festers Quest, which always I thought could of been a great game if just a few things had been tightened up like respawning enemies, the enemies taking too many hits, etc. Id love to see it be a licensed Blaster Master, just with the Zelda style over head stages only.
Dragon is really not as as bad as people will have you believe I got to learn it's mechanics as a fighting game fan and I really enjoyed it even today I can pick it up and have a good time with it
SO cool to see some love for the often and unfairly maligned lawnmower man.. It's a decent game by all accounts.. I was also a Sega kid like you, but I will admit I do prefer the snes version of that game.. Same game, I just prefer the snes one overall graphically. Cheers!
Universal Soldier is indeed Turrican II (whereas Mega Turrican was Turrican III but not made by the original creator), i didn't played this version but the open level of the II were always better than the third one for me.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t The Lost World game for the Genesis have those cool looking levels where you had to drive away from the dinos? I know you’ve covered that in other videos, but it would have been cool if you showed that off here. I could be thinking of another Jurassic Park game, though... lol
Didn't really understand the "we'd have had a winner" part. Lion King is awesome, one of the best platform games on the console, really. Never understood the difficulty argument either, i finished it several times as a kid with no particular trouble.
One of the best parts of the 'Sunsoft' Batman game was that it was true to it's source material. Specifically: Batman wasn't purple. 🤣😂🤣 Acclaim got his color right, but that was the only positive of what I refer to as: 'Mortal KomBatman'
I would've had Ancient (Yuzo Koshiro's team) to develop the 16-Bit version of Batman Returns. A Batman game reusing Shinobi's engine (or plays like it) would be a real money maker.
I'm definitely a big fan of Aladdin and Jurassic Park for the Genesis, even if Jurassic Park is really difficult. One of my close friends and I also like to fire up T2 The Arcade every now and then to see if we can finally get past that infuriating stage that involves protecting John Connor on a truck with a machine gun (which is far too easy to destroy). Maybe I'm just a sucker for underwater games, but The Little Mermaid wasn't too bad for me and that's considering that I also play Ecco the Dolphin, but I can understand why it may not be too appealing. I really want to get my hands on Ghostbusters, but maybe due to AVGN's video its a bit expensive and hard to find... :(
I can confirm Cutthroat Island is unredeemably awful. The youngest of my two sisters really liked the film at the time (she was maybe 8) and I had obtained her a megadrive all of her own. For Christmas I bought my brother a load of SNES games and my sister a load of Megadrive games. There were some mega bargains to be had in second hand stores around 1997. Cutthroat was one of the more expensive games as it was newer but since she was young and I tended to let my siblings come to their own conclusion to games although my bias would show through at times and my exuberance surly gave some things away... Anyway I bought it for her and my god did I regret the amount it cost me.
They were selecting the same teams because it was and some time today is easy money when it comes to well known movies!Back in the day we saw the title rambo, terminator, predator, alien on the cover art and we go on with or eyes closed to buy it.But after a while this started to be really annoying because of the bad productions, and same companies releasing those and produce them! Capcom however had the best platformers when ot comes to disney properties, but when they loosed the licenses wasn't so good in general. How sunsoft though failed with beauty and the beast is weird, since i was hoping to be the next company licensing great platforms for disney IP's!
Am i the only one who actually really likes Batman Forever? You have to know how to play the game to enjoy it. The quickest way to kill an enemy is to BITE him to DEATH! (-> -> + B). The music is far better then Barman Returns game (the speech is muffeled indeed) and it has COOP! And some nice training room to enjoy where you can play either as B or R or some of the enemies!
I put watching this particular video off because of the length of it, but I'm so glad I did because it's probably one of your best! I was one of those kids that almost always gave these games a try because I had enjoyed their movie counter parts so much, but looking back and now seeing this video, I definitely realize how shitty some of them were. LOL. I particularly loved your rant on Wayne's World; what a shit show!!! Awesome video Sega Lord X!!!
Megadrive was, and still is, my favourite platform, but I must admit movies based games wasnt its style. The only good movie based games to me, Robocop1987 and Batman 1989, were arcades from Atari
Man, I can't imagine how much time this took to research, script, capture, and record. Great video SLX. Your fans are thankful!!! Best Sega channel on RU-vid.
I remember spending an insane amount of hours playing Alien 3 on my Genesis. I just loved that game! I don't recall ever being able to beat it though. It was pretty big.
decent game based on a bad movie... the fact that it doesn't follow the movie very well is a GOOD thing! (in alien 3's case; speaking here of the Genesis version, I never really cared for the SNES version). Batman isn't the greatest game but it had a lot of style and was way better than the barely playable Batman Returns on genesis (but the CD game's batmobile expansion was like a game unto itself and pretty cool)
As I have experience with Genesis games only as adult, I feel that Alien 3 is an awful game. You have to endure, not enjoy it. But that's just an opinion.
Judge Dredd is a bit of an oddity, only the first third of the game is actually based on the movie, the rest is based on the comic "Dredd Vs Death", so did it start out as a comic license before Acclaim got therights to the movie?
I'm 29 years old,I played the hell out of this game as a kid and only managed to beat it a couple weeks back on my Mega Drive mini.... And I never knew about this until right now. My life has been wasted
Yeah Toy Story is one of the best Mega Drive games, I play it though again now and then to this day, another awesome movie based game is RoboCop Versus The Terminator, totally sublime and addictive action platformer.
I disagree with you on the first Home Alone game. I thought it was really fun. Placing traps and being able to randomly customize weapons to see what they do was great. Especially at that time where it was rarely ever seen in games. It was an easy game but nowhere near a bad one.
Back to the Future III wasn't reprogrammed for US release. US TVs run at 60fps but UK TVs run at 50. So the game runs too fast, making the game crazy hard. Shadow of the Beast had the same problem
Shadow of the beast had a worse problem than that. I believe some things were changed to compensate for the 60hz upgrade, but other things were over looked which is what makes it stupid hard in the none Pal versions.
Back To The Future III had a US release on the Mega Drive/Genesis, I know because I own one of them and it doesn't boot in PAL, just halts to a black screen. You may be confusing it with the Master System version which only got a PAL release and doesn't boot on NTSC systems.
I laughed hard when he said lion king was an easy pick up to play game. Not sure if he played the level where you swing from the vines and jumping on other animals
Ok I am going to hold back as best I can. Revenge of Shinobi is a masterpiece of gaming. For its time, as games have to be judged. Batman Returns is a game that does show effort, to make a "good" game, but should not be talked about in the same sentence as Revenge.
There is a certain something about Batman Returns that keeps me giving it a chance, despite it's lousy reputation. If you use a game genie/rom hack to give yourself a more reasonable amount of weapons? It becomes a lot more fun & playable. Kind of like the selectable number of shurikens in Shinobi, I suppose.
I always thought the graphics were so atmospheric in that game, really enjoyed it for that. But even as a kid I knew the gameplay was shit. Definitely some wasted potential.
Maybe I’m the only one who loved Batman Forever. I really enjoyed that game and finished 100%. I think it has to do with the fact that it was the only game I had for a year. My parents were only able to buy me one game per year (birthday), and without reviews, I had to pick based on how cool the cover looked. Still love the game today!
I played The Lawnmower Man on PC back in the day. Basically the Sega CD version with better visuals. I actually enjoyed it though it really was a thing of its time and has aged. More than anything else I liked that it wasn't fmv clips from the movie and instead was original cgi depicting your journey through VR. That and the music had a nice beat to it that kept it enjoyable for me.
From what I have looked up, the reviews that were promoting the Genesis version were published in late 1995. web.archive.org/web/19971120012056/www.gameinformer.com/dec95/toy.html And the reviews I have seen promoting the Super Nintendo version were published in early 1996. web.archive.org/web/19971120011612/www.gameinformer.com/jan96/toy.html The Sega Retro site was showing the Eroupian release date of the Genesis version, the game released nearly 5 1/2 months prior in the US.
I did a hit-less one for the game Hook back on my SNES when I was younger because once you got hit, you lost the Pan Sword so I actually beat the game not getting hit once (which was amazing for a kid back in the day). Emulated it recently and discovered you can recover the Pan Sword if you look for it. Fuck my younger life.
Hey guy, like the channel..mid 40's here, and I still love games... Believe it or not my favorite game on Sega used to be Ecco the dolphin... I know not of your pod...hahaha.. Anyways I subscribed to your channel and thank you for the good work sir
Back to the Future 3 on genesis. I rented that, and hated it so much. I got decent at the first stage, but I got so mad at howI'd have to re-do that first stage so many times. Later on in life I went through with an emulator and beat the game. Very unfulfilling life I lead
Terminator 2 the arcade game, Rambo III, Predator 2, Moonwalker, Aladdin, Ghostbusters, Pinocchio, Dick Tracy, all three Jurassic Parks, Toy Story, Pocahontas and Power Rangers the Movie were the best for me. Alien 3, and Hook were decent.
Sega obviously didn't have exclusive rights to Jurassic Park games, since SNES got a different JP game. NES too. Heck, maybe even Game Boy. That Jungle Book game has me wondering why there is ground in the trees.
You're right about a 'formula', even at the time on home micros like the Atari ST and the Amiga companies like Ocean would get a lot of flak for making "platform game #285 with the sprites looking a bit like things from the movie". That said I got the Amiga version of Addams Family (pretty similar to the MD version) much later on and remember really liking it once I got into it.
I remember the Cliffhanger game being pretty fun but stupidly hard. Looking back on it, it almost feels like Comix Zone in its difficulty... Edit: I used to have Moonwalker on Genesis (i think my mom still has that game and my genesis stored away) and until this video i didn't realize that even the damn red birds in the graveyard start dancing when you do your special😂😂😂
moonwalker was interesting. really cool visuals, awesome music and terrible, terrible acting for a really looney plot. but the inspiration for great video games if you can forget about how messed up the star was.
9 minutes in so far...I don't know why "Bram Stoker's Dracula" is such a debatable game. I think it's a great horror game on the Genesis compared to others. Not all of us were blessed with having Castlevania games growing up, so this was a great substitute. Also the music for it was superb...the boss fights are a little easy and some of the enemy placements are annoying/unfair, but it's definitely a good game to have in the collection and not a pass imo.
You were hella kind to lion king. The creator of that game had a youtube video calling it hot garbage. Said disney didnt wana game that could be beaten in a weekend.
Yeah I like the soundtrack too, it's a Tommy Tallarico soundtrack after all, his soundtracks are some of the better Genesis soundtracks that use GEMS. I don't think the Aladdin soundtrack is as good as the Earthworm Jim games or Cool Spot, but I do like the laid back, lounge music vibe it has. It gives the game a lot of it's unique personality.
And did you know that Jack Nicholson gets royalties for everything joker, he asked for so much % of Merch says for a low pay cheque and it's probably a decision the film studio regret cause Batman 1989 was huge
Wait you didn't like Aladdin's sound track but you the smooth game play made up for it? I mean taste is one thing, but you really should have mentioned that the sound track is actually considered a selling point to most. It's a really good sound track especially the original tracks, they put a lot effort into getting the sound track right, which sure is a matter of taste, but despite your taste most people would probably enjoy the sound track. Also in my opinion, I think the one part they did ok in, but it's clear that this wasn't the focus, and this backed up with the history, was the gameplay. They needed a pretty game that sounded good, and played well while looking good. They did a really good job, but it isn't the best platformer by a long shot.
I'm glad Acclaim Entertainment is no more because they made terrible games too bad EA has followed in Acclaims footsteps making cash grabs that are terrible.
Dragon can be fun for younger gamers? Dragon wasn't just terrible, it was nearly impossible unless you used a cheat to get the nunchucks. All in all though a fun video. Nice job.
