Flux makes you feel like you you're in space, original makes it look like you're staring up at a night sky, DS1 makes you to feel you are watching via Hubble telescope
Mine arrived today. I was very excited and it is super pixilated. The stars are square shaped. T_T am i doing something wrong? It is projected on my ceiling and my room isnt even that big.
@@zelzel3396 You have to try out some different places and hights to stand it on and you also can adjust the brilliance on the ring around the opening.
Hi Mark. Appreciate the review. Personally, however, I would prefer if you showed them on the ceiling at the actual distance people would be using it. Hard to gauge on the wall where the stars are too closely spaced.
Yeah i ended up buying the flux even though i thought it looked way too much white and unrealistic based on all the youtube comparisons, but im happy it's awesome. You really have to see it on ceiling at normal distance to understand the product. Thanks for the helpful review though!
I'm sorry but the fact that there is more stars crowding the view doesn't mean it's better. The original looks more realistic as would be visible to the naked eye. The flux makes it look like a grid of stars crowding the circle, much harder to imagine they are actually stars. Not to mention, you don't watch stars in a lit room, so comparing them in a lit space is absurd.
ICNiJuShi well I think part of the idea is it won’t look exactly like that, since you’re not supposed to have it that close to the walls. It should be backed up. But I generally agree with your assessment.
LOL always have this comment.. halo?!! he displayed on the wall.. can use ur brains or not? try to display it on the ceiling la!!! it will definitely spread out!! now imagine original is displayed on the ceiling? I wonder if the lighs can reach LOL
Recently purchased the Sega Homestar Original as a tool for relaxation and potential sleep aid while listening to whatever I can find here in RU-vid. The projection on the ceiling is very clear and detailed, especially thanks to the focus-adjustment ring on the top so you can tinker with the image until even the smallest details are visible. This thing is QUIET, very little noise, none if you are wearing headphones. In a very dark room, it will create a faint glow around everything, but not enough to keep you awake (Also less chance of bumping into something when you need to get up). Definitely use the 60 minute timer function because, more often than not, I tend to nod off to sleep before getting that far and its comforting to know it won't be running longer than it needs to. I don't know how it compares to the "Flux" but I believe $160 was a better value for what I was getting as opposed to about $250, especially on a product I'd never tried before. Very happy with the Original, and I don't really want anything brighter so probably won't invest in the Flux.
For all those who say "The original is more realistic", I recommend seeing the sky in a place far from a city, with very clean air and no full moon. You will be surprised... What if we compare the two versions by doing the projections on a dome?
I mean yeah if you used different infrareds with a scope you would see there’s hella fucking stars besides the one to the naked eye but who cares the point is WE SEE WITH THESE EYES not telescope eyes .so the realistic choice here would be the original not the flux .
prettyboiJustin you never been star watching clearly. It blows mind that people think the stars they see near cities and suburbs are the only ones visible to naked eye lol
No, I have been to Dark Sky location and the view is stunning amazing with thousand stars/planets.. BUT it does not look like Flux in a room... too bright, too concentrated.
Thank you for this! I was on the fence with getting this for my nephew for Christmas because of the price but this review sold it for me! Flux here I come lol!
Am I correct that there is a third model (Homestar Pro) released in-between the Homestar Flux and the Homestar Original(Classic)? I'm wondering whether the flux is still worth the premium price over the pro version. Also, in the Homestar Classic Review, you mention that the LED can not be changed. Can this be done on the Flux? Thank you for reviewing these!
hahaha.. erm... u guys stop fighting.. go buy the flux, and put display it on the ceiling(enuf distance) and not on the wall infront of u🙄.. u want it to be more reliastic? put it far away la!!! flux is obviously much crispier! imagine original display on the ceiling.. i wonder if it can reach the ceiling LOL
It's possible the Flux is using 'data' / images from a clearer, less light polluted sky than you are usually used to. I'm from NZ and we have a lot of remote areas (away from people & their lights) where the night sky is full of stars.
Also you have to realize when he has them side-by-side to each other the flux is overlapping the original so it’s going to look like it’s much more stars.. and it will overshadow the other one because it is brighter it’s all preference
I'd love to see different discs in each one. Here the flux is overwhelming and the original looks blurry but maybe it's the slides that are in. Thanks for this review.
Everybody wants to keep it 'realistic'! I live in a big city with loads of smoke and light pollution so the most "realistic" experience for me is refraining from purchasing a planetarium, switching off all the lights and gazing up at my dark, featureless ceiling.
Thanks for your work. It is great. Accidentally, in your video, I discover that they can produce a mild 3D effect when they are working together. In the same direction, one layer is moving in high speed while the other one is moving in relative low speed. Isn't it?👍
Thank you for this review. As of 2021 which planetarium would you recommend? Would you still prefer the Sega Flux or is there something better? Thanks.
Depends how much you want to pay, the DS1 I've also reviewed Is better than the Flux, but also a lot more expensive. As far as I'm aware the Flux is still the most recent product from that manufacturer.
@@markjdraper Ah, thank you so much for your thoughts. Yes, the DS1 is $579 now !!! With the chrome disc and the "twinkle" module, with taxes, shipping and handling we are talking &750 !!! My best friends just had baby twins and I thought this would be a creative and awesome present but not at this price. Just nutso! I'm sure it's nice though.
Yes it's a lot, now I understand what you want it for I'd recommend checking this one out ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EPG04V2zBOA.html
@@markjdraper Thank you, so much, for your continued support, Mark. It means a lot. I checked out the low cost projector and I think I will split the difference and the get the Sega Homestar Flux. I think the adults would be mesmerized too with the Flux. Who knows what newborn babies will think of a night sky? One more question. Does the flux have "twinkling" starts or are they static? The DS-1 offers a twinkling module, again, for an added cost.
Thank you for this great review. I am curious to your opinion on the flux versus Uncle Milton’s Star Theatre Pro. In my understanding, they are both 5 W. The Flux seems to offer superior discs. Any comment on the difference in optical lens quality or other features? Thank you.
Were you using the same discs in both machines? Can you swap them between machines and get the same exact results? I want to look up and see what I'd see if I was outside on a clear night. Is the original version really that blurry and blah?
Thought exactly that and got disappointed with the Flux. I want the room to look like the night sky, not like a part of the sky is being projected on one wall.
I own both The home star is not as bright, kind of looks like watching galaxy in the wild, with city light The new flux is much more better Feels so close to it Brighter, much brighter than before of course also can run by USB Can travel with you if you want
Just wondering if it comes with some sort of audio that explains what you are looking at? considering buying it as a gift and really want something with audio tracks. Thanks in advance :)
Hello. Thanks for the interesting review. I have a question: do you know if all the Sega Toys discs are compatible with the Flux version? :) Or some are only for the classic version?
So if I have 12 foot ceilings the stars would not be so condensed? I would like to buy the Flux but the stars are so condensed again, I don’t know how far you are from the wall. Any helpful words? Thanks in advance.
Thanks for the video man. I was looking for one on the internet, the flux seem much clearer, but the density of the the stars feels too much. The density in the original seems more realistic. Noticed in the video there is to much noise in the colors of the original, is it from the camera? The original costs around 100$ which is quite comfortable price for the pocket. And the flux costs around 300$, a little bit expensive. I wanna buy one of these, but I don't want to spend money on the original and not being satisfied. Should I buy the original? Or should I save a little bit more money for the flux? Is there any other planetarium projectors?
Hello Mark, could you please tell me if you have heard about the extra version of the Sega planetarium? (Planetarium Super Star Theatre Homestar EXTRA Sega ), it is almost 10 times more expensif than the original classic one and i only see comments from japan and old ones. By the way would you recommend that one or the DS1 which is quite cheaper. thank you for your excellent videos!
Hello, thanks for checking out my channel. Others have mentioned the premium version but I've never seen or tried it (if I had there would be a video from me 😁). I've had a lot of messages asking where to get the DS1 from, so I'd be surprised if you could find it. Couldn't say which is better as I've only tried the DS1.
@@markjdraper both are still totally unavailable at the moment in France too 😢 and it seems that the extra version from Sega was stopped ( from what i just read on the web... that’s why i can only find it second hand ). I guess the DS1 is incredible from your review and unavailable stock 👍🏻 thanks indeed for your reply.
Very very useful. Great presentation. Thank you. Will buy the flux. Maybe the heating up of original unit is due to the electric plug vs. the USB cable that perhaps prevents heating up the electric box connected to wall which then connects to unit. I never thought about that before but that seems to be a technological built in wiring of all USB connecting devices, the phones and lamps and fans that you can connect with USB these days don't get warmed. Perhaps that's a great advantage to USB designed devices and appliances. Lol.. oooh maybe I'm smarter than I thought on this Sunday morning after holidays. I'm not a techy girl. At all. But a musician who is always plugging things in. I'm so not technical that I bought the planetarium discs online and then when they arrived I realized I had no way to play these discs and directions said it's for use on Sega homestar. Flux, etc. So now I need to get that ... but need the stars on my ceiling, so must expand my "stuff" collection. Excited to get the flux now and keep it permanently set in a great corner of our home for starry nights. Nice box for a shelf too, the flux.
I want one of these for my home theater. Higher quality is generally better yet I’m worried that the flux will light up my room too much while viewing films. Would the flux disrupt or enhance your film viewing experience? Which would you buy in my case?
Check out ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MgsQXP8M66M.html to see the light leakage, both Sega units are very good at keeping the room dark.
For that price, as a home user, i'd just buy a digital projector for use with a still image from JPL's website or with a public domain video of the night sky. A digital projector would have multiple uses and you wouldn't have to pay 25 dollars for new discs. The Sega Homestar would be good in a teaching environment though.
No, but it also doesn't leak much light either, see this comparison video I did recently: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MgsQXP8M66M.html
i agree it seems more better for identifying constellations where the new flux is over powered with so many meaningless stars the original is the one if you want to understand the star-planet and arrangements from what i see here need to check other reviews. thanks for the review
i followed the link you put on the description but i don’t know which one is the flux model? which one is it? and do you have to buy the disc separately? or does it come with one?
Something i dont understand about this comparison: why didnt you use the focus ring to make sharper the original homestar? And above this, the flux is sharper than the original, specially at the edge? Thanks
Hello, thanks for your review here. Very useful information. But I am wondering if you have any idea about the homestar lite product. It surely has a more affordable price. I wonder what's the difference between the original one. Thanks.
Hey Mark, cheers for the great review! A subjective question but do you (or anyone reading this) think the Flux is too bright for a kids room while they sleep? I figure not as this is probably the number one use case, but it does look super bright! I'll check out your ds1 review too. Pretty expensive but in for a penny... :D
Glad you enjoyed it. You should check out this video where I demo how bright they are in a bedroom, I think you'll be pleased with both the original and Flux results ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MgsQXP8M66M.html
@@markjdraper Mark that is an absolutely OUTSTANDING review. I'm shocked how little collateral light the planetarium throw. Thanks for the effort, this is absolutely top class. I'll get the flux for cost reasons, and no doubt sell it and upgrade to the ds1 six months later 🤣 Thank you!
I live in a rural area in Tasmania, in the southern hemisphere and the sky is black and it is very dark. The Flux looks more realistic to me, however, it also looks strange (in the video) because it was projecting the northern hemisphere. The stars here are very bright and clear, the planets easy to see, and the Milky Way sometimes is so intense and crystal clear, and seems so close, that it feels like you can almost touch it. You can see all the colours. It's breath-taking!! All with just the naked-eye. In the city, the night sky looks washed out. I just bought the Flux for my 4 year old grandson. He is mad about the sky, moon and starts etc. I can't wait to see his reaction :) With his keen interest, I thought it best if he's looking at a realistic night-sky, and he will be able to maybe match the Flux sky with the real sky oneday.
I'd love to visit such an area to check out the real night sky, I've always lived in a built-up area. It's certainly on my to-do list once I can travel again.
Do you thing this products are useful to learn the constellations? or is it too much dots to understand? (and wich producto would be better for learning the sky?)
You have the option of using the constellation disc, which shows constellation lines on the star maps. I'm sure this would be helpful in learning, but of course what you see in the night sky would look different due to local light pollution.
Home planetarium technology has really lagged behind in my opinion . Neither of these look that great and if I had to choose one, it looks like the original has a more realistic spacing of stars and clusters etc. The new Flux projection just looks way to packed with stars and looks like it would benefit from being as far back from the surface to be projected on as possible. It just doesn't look inviting from this video at all. I'm really surprised we don't have an affordable laser solution these days for projections or at least something that mimics 3D spatial projection. Maybe that 10 years off still, otherwise I would love to relax looking into a realistic projection of the heavens.
I agree, I have been looking around and the cheaper ones like bliss model emits unrealistic shit lasers to the ceiling, its cool but just unealistic. We have come so far with technology and no one or company has been able to fill a home with a reasonable, small REALISTIC view of our solar system or galaxy with actual stars moving and maybe have a milky way stay still. Is that too hard to ask for companies to produce? 😔
Where is the best place to buy the discs and are they compatible between the 2 units? Seems like their website is hard to navigate. Their are a ton of odd websites that sell their products as well so buyer beware.
Thanks for the review, I will probably order the flux,i did have the original a year ago but sent it back due to its lack of brightness and focus at the edges. For people who think the flux has to many stars, when you can see the night sky from somewhere like the Mojave desert you wouldn't say that.....Its unbelievable how many stars you can see with the naked eye...
Now I'm in contradiction. I like the realistic look on the original but i don't quite like the blurriness and that shutting star looks weird. On the other hand, i like the clarity of the flux. But again, there are to manny stars.. And I'm not sure were to get the discs from. Any recommendations, Mark Draper? Also, thank you for the review!
Hello, I have seen other models in which you can choose the projection date, in this one it is not possible. I would like to know how you do it to know it, and some tips to know how you do the set-up to observe constellations. Thank you!
These models project discs, they don't allow you to set a date or time. To view constellations you put the projection disc that includes constellations into the projector.
I wish he would have projected each on the ceiling, instead of really close on a wall. The original looks better here but only because it's so close to the wall.If it was projected on a ceiling the Flux would look better and not so cluttered as it does here but thats just a guess based on this video.
Hey Mark, could I use a smart plug to run the Flux with Alexa? If the power of the Flux is left on and the same plug shuts off, when the smart plug gets turned back on again, does the Flux automatically come back on?
I really want one of these and honestly if I’m already gonna spend $160 for the Original, $100 more for the Flux is totally worth it as the improvements are drastic. Flux here I come! They are also much smaller than I expected and the matte finish on the flux does indeed make it look more premium in comparison to its original counterpart.
I have to say both are good. I have both new and old.the new one it covers a much larger area! all i do is move the new 5 watt one back to another side of the room and that spaces everything out good. the original is good if you just need a short throw. i love them both, the newer one is now my favorite!
thank you so much for the side by side!! It does seem like the flux is worth the extra money. I've had my eye on both of these projectors for years now. The green laser look of most projectors really takes away from the space feel, but it's worth saving up for the flux!
Not wanting to cause you too much indecision, but you might also want to check out the new FX ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-p6zIl4Z949E.html
The older model looked more like the night sky we see with the naked eye. The Flux may be nice and bright but way too many stars to be realistic - is this because of updated discs perhaps? I would prefer a brighter ( 5Watt ) model of the older one. Before I buy, I'm wondering if anyone can also tell me what power Wattage the older model is, and maybe if it is upgradable??
I don't know if there was something wrong with the one I had but the Sega Toys Homestar Flux (Satin Black) Home Planetarium Star Projector was absolutely worthless in my experience. it barely showed up in the dark. I had to kept it literally 2 inches from the wall to get any definition to the stars.
I have a ds1 for my older son and an Uncle Milton Star theater pro for my second son. Don’t purchase the ds1. The clarity is not worth the crazy price tag, imo. The stars still blur around the edges and within a few months I had to ship it back to have them fix a grinding sound with the rotation. I had to pay $42 to ship it and now it’s been a few months and it’s again making that awful sound. Also, they put the power cord jack on the front of it so the cord gets bent, I had to replace it. I just purchased an Uncle Milton Star theater pro for my third son. If I upgrade them, I’ll probably get the flux. The only thing the ds1 has over the Uncle Milton is a shooting star.
I like how spread out it all is on the original but hate the fact that it looks just a bit TOO blurry, on the new one, the sharpness of the edges of the light is what gets me mad. If there was someway to manipulate/shape the light at least, it would cool I guess. I don't know where I stand. I'd have to see these both in my own room to make a good decision, FML!
@@markjdraper okay! I see... It's just,I bought the Flux for my friend recently and it's hard to find the Flux discs... And I found some for the original one. So it fits, but the quality is not the same?
