Thats a launch master system controller, easy to spot because has the cable on the side, after that one the cable was coming from the top, and the they removed the joystick for good. not common but those rubbers can loose conductivity, so you can end not fixing them only by cleaning.
@bonim5217 Yes, I've actually had a couple of them in the past that cleaning and new rubbers really didn't fix it. I do like the 'newer' ones better, but at the moment I do not have any. I typically fix these consoles and sell them later on at cons, or just trade them for other things. Doing that helps me keep my hobby/obsession going! FYI.. I've never used a SMS2, so cannot comment on that, however, I know the master system controllers seemed to be pretty solid back in the day, but after 30 or so years, they do get worn out. I've not experienced any Sega controller I've ever had or used that buttons popped out of.
