The fist console i bought with my own earned money with a copy of Resident Evil. Save Battery died, and i had to finish resident evil 1 on one sitting without saving, now that's survival horror.
Broooooo "3 dirty dwarves" I remember playing the demo for this game when I was like 6 but never could remember the name of it. Whenever I describe it people always look at me funny.... So glad you guys put it up!
Rockman 8, Rockman X4, Samurai Spirits 3, Samurai Spirits 4 - Amakusa's Revenge, Street Fighter Zero, Zero 2 and Zero 3, Real Bout Fatal Fury Special... these are the ones that came to mind now but there are so many other games!
I got my Sega Saturn about 2 years ago. I got a model 1 for $70 came with a Model 1 controller, power cable, and original composite cable. I hadn't played it for awhile until recently my local retro game store got a bunch of games but most of them are in the $200-400 range which is so irritating cause I want them all. There was Panzer Dragoon, Saturn Bomberman, Mega Man 8 Anniversary, and Mega Man X4 all of them complete! The only game I have with my collection that's worth something is Nights Into Dreams.
@MetalJesusRocks - Where the heck was "Dark Savior" in this list? Absolutely Fantastic game with great features.. time travel... variable story paths etc etc.. and Guardian Heroes ?
Mobile Suit Gundam Side Story: The Blue Destiny is easy to play with very fast and fluid controls. Among Saturn imports, that’s definitely one I would’ve picked up had I known about it as a kid. Deep Fear is a great survival horror entry; all the dialogue is in English, so you just need to get familiar with some Kanji text to navigate menus and commands. Policenauts has a fan-made English translation patch now, too, so don’t pass up that one.
There are more than 2 models. The hardware inside is a bit different. 13+ motherboard revisions. 3+ types of cd-rom drives. The action replay won't let you play rom cart based games like ultraman The video port does rf, composite, s video, RGB over scart, RGB over jp21. You still have that modified action replay I sent you? I have a translated version of policenauts for you to check out.
The Saturn is one of my favorite systems of all time! So many great games. The best US games are too expensive, so I got my system modded a couple years ago.
Fortunately Sega learned from their mistakes in the Saturn era and gave us PAL Dreamcast cases made out of the most brittle plastic they could find. :-) The PAL plastic Saturn cases are very nice and rugged, at least, it's just a shame so few games used them.
Lol, I found they just couldn't get the cases right on the Saturn in Europe. You either couldn't keep them shut or could not get them open depending on the case model
JDH 33 very true, I think I've got 3 different case styles in my collection. it does make my Saturn collection look a bit random! I must admit I'd rather they were all the same.
I don't think it's true about the saturn case because, here in europe, we had long case too (a bit differant) but we had classic CD case (multipack type) for the Mega-CD (Sega-CD in USA). Great video, as always !
I just got one for $10 (CDN) it's a first model Japanese one. It has a faulty cd drive. Any way could you do an import game list? (like a easy to play game)
Special thanks to MetalJesus for having me on his channel again! I have way too much fun with my dad jokes and overall shooting these videos ^_^. Thanks to all of YOU for watching. Any games you are going to pick up from this guide, or is there a game you think EVERY Saturn owner should have???
Love that that Sega Saturn collection is still getting videos. Dragon Force doesn't get much attention, which is a shame, since it's still one of the best and most unique Saturn games ever.
Love when you both put out a Saturn Video. I'm a big fan/collector. Might I suggest a video with a buyers guide geared towards more "moderately" priced offerings? MKRE, Panzer Dragoon Saga, and Saturn Bomberman are a little on the up and up. Saturn still has great low price offerings out there that don't need the "hey man Mod and Burn" comment every time on the collectors board. It doesn't have to be the most expensive console to collect for.
I do agree with you on the price of Saturn stuff, but a lot of the people complaining about Saturn are sitting in a room with multiple consoles and 1000 games. They've paid for the Saturn and the top 10 games they want multiple times over.
@@Junior13113 $1350 as of writing of this comment. There are plenty of sought-after JRPGS, but DAYUM! With Wild Arms 5, you can at least say "I get $1 an hour out of this." You can get Earthbound, Path of Radiance, Radiant Dawn, AND Chrono Trigger all CIB for about the same price as 1 Rayearth. No shame emulating this one.
Everything's expensive to collect for these days. It's kinda taken the fun out of it. My collection is worth a lot more than it used to be, but I'd rather have my hobby back.
Very very important PSA: if you have an action replay or any other cart, plug it once and leave it in the console forever. A few in and out can damage the cartridge slot permanently.
I love the candid, no bullshit format of this channel. You cut right to the chase, keep it light, and provide the right visuals and music without overdoing it. I know ill never own every system so this is the next best thing for my nostalgia fix
The Saturn has the biggest, hairiest balls of ANY console ever made and built like a brick. It's also super easy to mod, has the best consumer light guns and has the quietest most reliable CD drive of ANY CD console. It's just a killer machine.
I just can't agree more with this statement. And yes, Sega Saturn was one of those things, which magnificence we can understand only years after. It's a shame that it was a flop inthe US, but in Japan it is still highly respected as one of the best consoles and for a good reason.
bumtree Don't forget that it has the best 2D controller ever made with the finest D-Pad ever crafted by man (and I obviously don't mean that cyber 90s looking abomination the Saturn launched with in the west, which was quickly replaced by a black version of the original, glorious Japanese controller).
Once you own a Saturn the only thing you should realistically be buying are CD-Rs so you can build a collection of Saturn Games. Unless you just have an endless disposable income.
It's already good . You know in France we speak not very English, so the effort is praiseworthy. I love the videos of MJR. They are very interesting I also like when you are with him as on video today. Thanks for the reply and soon
Great video! Not sure if it's an exclusive (I wanna say it is) but Bubble Symphony was the Bubble Bobble for Saturn. Also recommending the vertical shmup 'Blast Wind' because it's fun and because the name makes me chuckle. Cotton 2 is a fun cute'em up, too.
Yep. Much more attractive then Kelsey IMO. She's my kind of girl. I dream of dating a girl like Anna, a tom-girl who beautiful and sporty/tom boyish. I'm in love
Karen Smith • LOL! Best comment I’ve ever seen in response to guys who can only talk about their attraction once a female is in their sight! I always slap my head when we’re here for games or something, but then someone comes in “mate mode.” Always made me wonder how girls/women cope, though I wasn’t surprised when the result seemed to be they didn’t want to hang around in the same hobbies as goons. Sometimes, it’s just nice to share common interests like games, eh?
I can’t wait to start collecting for the Saturn. I went from Genesis straight to Dreamcast and loved both. This is going to be an entirely new experience yet familiar at the same time. Thanks for the tips!
Most Japanese games are actually in English, but instead of being written with roman letters that you already know, they are written in katakana. Katakana has 46 characters and they are not that complicated. Japanese is phonetic so once you know how to pronounce them, you can understand all of the "English" in Japanese games. Besides dialogue and story in RPGs, almost everything is in English, so if you know English and how to read katakana, you can play most Japanese games.
I think I can kind of get what you mean as the name Francis is "Furuanshisu"....or close to it. I looked into it once out of curiosity and to see how the characters looked as it is my sons name and it was shown as like segmented sounded parts with the corresponding symbol maybe five or so, the first part was like fu...I did think, maybe I could get some very basics so I don't quit instead of retry or whatever in some games lol
My all time favorite console. So many amazing 2D shmups and fighters. PS. Those arcade sticks shown here are pieces of shit. Get the japanese virtual stick if possible.
Unfortunately Panzer Dragoon Saga will be the only real exclusive in videogame history. Its source code is completely lost so a port is impossible. Any remake must be started from scratch. It's a pity. This in one of the greatest games in history. Even my 11 year old nephew, that just plays XB360 and PS3 games loves it.
Albert Mas wow, I hadn’t heard the source code to Panzer Dragoon Saga is gone! How did they let that happen? Did they forget to click “save”? Any attempt to recreate it, even on the newest machines, would just be an echo of the real thing. It’s so unique, it’s very hard to describe! I should give Lando a call, see if he could store mine in carbonite!
@@sideswipe1261 For anyone knows the source code could be in a random garbage from someone who worked on the game for all we know. I know this was the case for a Sonic game I think. Still a shame it's currently lost though.
NiGHTS came out after the N64 launch (in the US). The 3D controller was released with NiGHTS in Dec 1996. The N64 was in development with an analog stick for a couple of years and the controller was revealed in 1995. So the N64 the first
Not only that but before both the n64 and Saturn we had aftermarket Genesis controllers with an analog stick to make flight sims easier. N64 only has one claim and that's it used cartridges FAR beyond everyone stopped using them. And I know that it was a choice madeby Nintendo and it allows for instant load times but if thier cartridges were so great then why did Nintendo invent the 64DD?
Holy crap, I have a lot of these old Saturn games, l had no idea some of this stuff was that valuable. I bought 80% of it in closeout bins when the Saturn failed. I just dug mine out to play one of my favorite games of all time Dragon Force.
ShaolinGamer OUCH! is collecting really that pricey? It makes me happy I kept everything I bought (“Panzer Dragoon Saga” from a buddy that worked at Babbages)- he only asked me $40.00 for his Flawless copy, as he’d already beaten it.
Chilly Willy 88 If you want, you can visit my channel. I have uploaded some (PAL) Saturn gameplay videos, attract mode stuff etc. un-emulated. More to come in the future (Japanese, US games too). Thx. ☺
gfgfgf40 Yes, it's noticeable. But it's still playable in my opinion. Sometimes i use my modded Saturn (region-free, 50/60 hz switch) instead. In the 80's and early 90's i played all of my japanese games on my unmodded PAL Mega Drive. Modding was too expensive at this time in Germany..and as a kid..
I love the Sega CD & the Saturn so much more then the Genesis and Dreamcast. I had more fun with those systems over the other 2. Albert Odyssey is my favorite game on the Saturn. Dark Savior is a fun one too.
I love the Sega Saturn! It is the biggest part of my huge video game collection. My personal favorite game is Shining The Holy Ark followed closely by Magic Knight Rayearth and Shining Force III
The Badcompany Gaming I’m hoping and praying for an English translation (ntsf region1) Shining Force 3: Parts 2-3 (I’ll play them on PC, DC, Saturn, 2600- any version is better than no Chapters 2&3! Any ideas? I’d never played turn-based before this. I was enthralled! Then SEGA said “no 2 or 3 for English”. Brother Metal, how can finish the game I started?
The Badcompany Saturn is also why I made sure to keep a 31” CRT (it weighs 1,624lbs)- for Virtua Cop 1 & 2! (Light guns only work with CRT). And many gamers feel playing older games look *better* on CRT- I agree! It sounds backwards, but I’m guessing you know ll of that already. Great video! Thank you!
@@sideswipe1261 Have you since found out that Parts 2 and 3 can be played on reproductions with a Pseudo Saturn cartridge? You can even get the fully translated Premium Disc.
The Badcompany #ShiningForce3Part1of3 *sigh*. The chapter we did get was riveting! The first grid-based tactical RPG I ever played. I love my Saturn! If you haven't already got Tempest 2000, seek it out! I'll keep my eyes open too! It's so intense and trippy. Once I got the hang of it it became my biggest addiction (and for 1998/99 that's saying a lot for me! Lol!). Great rave soundtrack too! (The soundtrack was actually released as a commercial audio CD as it was so loved!)
I've recently (within 2 months) read that fans translated the text for parts 2 and 3! unsure of platform/emu it's on. I could be wrong, but think they really swapped out the in game Japanese text with English (compared to a stack of paper print outs, which I'd also be happy for!). There is hope! I have Shenmue II in English for Dreamcast, and Half-Life w/the Blueshift big bonus quest. I'm 100% SEGA, but they frustrate me when they refuse to do even simple things in huge demand by hardcore fans! *WakeUp #SEGA*! So many are willing to throw you money! Yet you've done nothing to make it happen? Weird.
Very durable machine. I still have my original Saturn hooked up, and in January I'll have had it for 20 years. And there are a ton of good imports for the system, depending on what you like. Capcom fighters are always a joy on the Saturn, and a good one for that Pro Action Replay would be X-Men vs Street Fighter. As close to the arcade as you could get that generation, and the extra 4MB RAM really showed how good the game not only looks on the Saturn, but plays (with the helper characters you can call in to switch with you, something you couldn't do on the PS1 version). If you like Pinball, one game that might tickle your fancy may be Necronomicon Digital Pinball. Related to the Digital Pinball series by Kaze, this one has three tables with a Lovecraft feel, and a big plus is that the opening and ending music is performed by John Petrucci of Dream Theater. While there are a lot of good domestic games for the Saturn, in Japan there is an embarrassment of riches for the system.
Theodore Relic Ya man Xmen vs Street Fighter, SF Zero 3 and Xmen Children of the Atom were amazing on the Saturn! The PSX version of XvSF actually had a tag mode if you used the Gameshark with it. Not nearly as crisp, but you were able to enable it.
Metal J and beautiful co-host, this video is great and I’m under 4 minutes in! If you a Saturn Action RePlay 4M+ without a home, I’d be ecstatic and so grateful! I wonder if “Guardian Heroes” can use it for the slowdown when 30-40 bad guys need a relocation!
Getting Sega Saturn has made me so glad I started learning Japanese few years ago because of all the import games. Makes life much more simple. Japanese version of Panzer Dragoon Saga? No problem, 20 bucks.
My heart lit up when Saturn Bomberman showed onscreen! I’m getting ready to host my second “Bomberman” Party! The first was a huge success (16 college friends is a *PARTY* when in your 30’s)! The whole point of the game is legendary “Battle Mode”. And when you’re playing w/6-10 friends laughing, elbowing, smack-talking, *laughing for hours*...there’s nothing like that for a party!
Gillian Seed Good to know. Also, glad to see that the English translation of Policenauts on Saturn was completed recently; have been wanting to play it for so long. I know we had the PlayStation version for awhile.
Recently I released videos about: Atari 2600 + Sony Walkman Prototype, Best RPGs for Beginners, Metal Jesus Rocks Q&A - LIVE at Portland Retro Gaming Expo, Heavy Metal Vinyl Pickups, Pioneer LaserActive, Ultimate GBA (GameBoy Advance) - Modded to Perfection, etc... that more varied than most other RU-vid channels.
For Japanese import Saturn games you should try X-men VS. Street Fighter, Marvel VS. Street Fighter, Rock Man/Mega Man X 3 and 4, Lunar 1 and 2 , Magical Droop 1, 2 and 3, Dark Stalkers 3 Vampire Savior, DragonBall Z Shin Butoden, Castlevania Dracula X (in the U.S. called Symphony of the Night) Street Fighter Zero 3 and House of the Dead because I can not find a reasonably priced U.S. version. For the U.S. Saturn Bust a Move 2 and 3, Mega Man X 4 and Street Fighter Alpha 1 and 2.
I had a rgb scart to hdmi converter. Sadly sold my Saturn and games when I was married. Still had converter in the car but I gave back the car to my ex wife. Oh well, time to rebuild my collection.
Sorry to hear dude. But at least this time around you can mod it with various ODEs (Mode/Rhea/Phoebe/Fenrir) which replaces the cd drive with an sd card slot. Archive.org hosts alot of the games
Anna is very cute! 😍 I’ve been interested in getting a Saturn for awhile but didn’t think there were many good games. Now I know there’s plenty of fun games for the system.
Pseudo Saturn Kai is the name of the software, not the cart, the carts are usually called Saturn All in One. Burned games are an option but, personally I prefer ODEs, in special the Satiator.
Magic Knight Rayearth (£300+) in a buying guide.. Seriously? Buying guides should be seen as quick starts to a console.. Eg 1. Ffvii, Tekken 3, Gran Turismo and Resident Evil 1 or 2 on the origional playstation.. Eg 2. Donkey Kong Country, Mario all stars, Mario Kart and starwing on SNES Putting MKR in there is like putting Suikoden 2 on a ps1 buying guide .. or Fire Emblem Path of Radiance on a Gamecube (or Goemon 2 boxed in a pal N64 guide XD) It's soo out of place, this is a prime example why you get bad comments about driving prices up on hidden gem vids..
Sephiroth Vale We had this discussion on the Sega Saturn Buy, sell, trade board (FB) how this hardware gets such a bad reputation for being expensive when there are plenty of value titles that are great (Nights, Manx TT, and an absolute slew of Imports)
I agree totally, I bought an asian sega saturn (HK model).. Which is awesome because it uses a UK plug socket, but plays Japanese games & Is the sexy white version.. Just for the imports :D
If I had a Sega Saturn, I would get Saturn Bomberman, Sonic Jam, Sonic R, Street Fighter, Dead or Alive and other fighting games for it. I hate Virtua Fighter. The Virtua Fighter series aged really badly over the years and Sega never improved the series' gameplay mechanics. I am also not getting Sonic 3D Blast/Sonic 3D: Flickies' Island. That game is garbage.
Panzer Dragoon was my first contact with home 3d gaming after years and years playing the original NES. I was absolutely blown away and i spent many many summers shut in playing it. My favorite game ended up being Nights. To be honest, at the time, and for that generation of consoles, Nights was the most beautiful game ever. More than that, the 3D flying engine was so smooth, colors so bright and the all "vibe" of this surreal game still makes me want to play it today. Sadly, like many others, i sold it with 12 games for almost NOTHING for college beer money. Did the same with my NES and Original game boy with over 20 games each. I profoundly regret those stupid decisions. The only retro console i still have is the Dreamcast. I will start collecting for it.
The prices on a lot of this Saturn stuff used to be affordable, but there's no way Id buy Sotn on it these days. I remember when batsugun went from $80 to $300 in the span of a month and STILL hasn't gone down. Just get pseudo saturn.
@@GiordanDiodato I have a good job thank you, I just don’t think £70 for a slightly above average for the time 25 year old game is worth it. You and the people who “thumbed up” your comment should be ashamed of yourselves. (Rude prick).
The proper pronunciation is Duh-Rye-Us. In ancient history, the Persian king Darius the 3rd, was defeated by Alexander the Great at the Battle of Gaugamela. P.S. Great Saturn review.
Great video - After switching to using RGB SCART with an upscaler I have been amazed at how good the games look! Heres a few import titles I would recommend 1. Batsugun 2. Thiunder Force V 3. Donpachi / Dodonpachi 4. Akumajo Dracula X: Nocturne in the Moonlight 5. Shinrei Jusatsushi Taromaru 6. Shining Force III (all 3 scenarios, which recently got a US translation patch)
The SCART cable I got for my NTSC Saturn was $9.99 from Amazon. The converter was $35. Use it in 720p mode for the least input lag as that resolution is just 3x 240p. It's dope on an HDTV!
I like your buying guide, but I've gotta say...Kinda missed the mark on this one. Virtual on with its Twin Stick controller, no arcade stick, no Fighters Megamix, no Radiant Silvergun, no Street Fighter Zero 3, no House of the Dead, no Keio 2, no Quake, no Shining Force 3? No Sega Rally?????? The games you selected, while good titles, do not cover the width and breadth of the amazing titles available in Saturn library. I hope you follow this up with many, many hidden gem videos to cover dozens of the incredible games you didn't touch on in this video.
N64 was released in Japan June 23, 1996 then in North America September 26, 1996. Nights Into Dreams (and their analog stick controller) was released July 5, 1996. Its not even a discussion. N64 had the first analog stick controller. Put it this way: I was using the N64 analog stick on a demo system in Toys R Us before Sega's controller hit the shelves. Another great video.
Here in Mexico VCD was very popular, in fact I had the Movie Card for the PlayStation (grey) and for the PSOne... Movies like Spiderman was divided in 2 discs.
Just want to add a great game: Guardian Heroes. A great beat'em up that glued a nintendo fan like me to a SEGA console for more than a hundred hours easily.
remember asking prices aren't the same as worth... i see it going for a lot, but if you look at sold listing on ebay it's way less.. and seriously who's gonna spend 1500 dollars on a video game xD only rich people
