Well, to make a long story short, I lost the Bay Route pcb because the battery went dead but was able to save the Tetris pcb from the same demise.
With these sega system 16b hitachi FD1094 A-12 custom chips they contain a battery which over time will die if you dont replace it. I found this out the hard way so if you have one of these boards, make sure to replace the battery asap!
I also learned after making this video that when you go to change these batteries out, make sure that you have constant power going to the chip because if you lose the power you board is dead.

The FD1094 is just a 68000 CPU with the game's decryption tables stored in SRAM kept by the battery. I have tried using a dead FD1094 in a Sega Genesis just for lulz and it would not work, go figure. They will not operate as normal 68000 CPUs with dead SRAM.

@hex1gon at the time, the problem was that most games which were popular at the time (i.e. Michael Jackson's Moonwalker) would be bootlegged, usually by copying the data on cheaper roms (which sometimes would have odd effects). and rather than lose money to the bootleg boards, they'll go ahead and place these suicide batteries to ensure that nothing will work.

I replaced the battery in my Moonwalker 'live' with the pcb running on an arcade PSU, that way it never lost power and survived the replacement.

I would clip on a pair of AA batteries before switching the cr2302 cell. don't worry the AA batteries wont kill anything. This is what I did to snes nes games and n64 save packs to not lose the content.

Hey Luke, you can replace that Hitachi FD1094 with a regular 68000 and burn some unencrypted ROMs to resurrect Bay Route..

@segagenesis1989 do not grieve. at least this contra clone whose title was a play in words referencing a location which was in the headlines in the 80s (Bay Route = Beirut) has joined Golden Tee 2 in being one with the matrix.

Hey Luke. You can solder the new battery in parallel with the old battery before removing the old battery from the circuit. This way the circuit stays powered and you don't run the risk of losing data. With the cells wired in parallel, the voltage remains at 3.0V so the circuit will not be damaged.

@JakalairVG pretty much. Luke mentioned "suicide battery" a couple of times during the vid. That's what they're called, basically. Once there is no power going to the board, decryption data is wiped, leaving the board useless, because it can't run anything from the encrypted roms. Your only option at this point is to burn new roms that aren't encrypted to "resurrect" the board.

You may be able to revive Bay Route. There are decrypted ROMS available from Sega Resurrection.

@OilyTower, I know of a safer way to do it. Just solder some wire... and then buy one of those small clippie thingies (I wish i knew what tehy were called) and clip them on the battery wire. THere, no soldering with the battery :D

Luke, I have a eSWAT pcb and the high scores do not save if I turn the power off on the cabinet. Is this normal or is there a battery on the pcb that I need to replace?

@Nesveri Someone should start writing a show based on shows like E.R. and have Luke as the main character...Fixing video game harware in the nick of time, lol xP

That version of Tetris was compressed into a medium chip and stuck into a Megadrive cart as well listing to the music that board gives out.

All you need is a standard 68000 CPU and the patched ROMs.

Really cool to see the repair in live action. Nice work saving that Tetris board! I really hate it when certain boards incorporate suicide batteries. Hey, but if there's one person in the world who can get that Bay Route PCB up and running again, I would have to say it would be you, for sure. Awesome stuff as always!

Very interesting video. Any clue why they built it this way? Is it just that they never thought those things would be around for 20 years?

im so sorry for your loss man that is truly sad to hear you couldn't save your motherboard but if anyone could have done it it would have been you so with that being said you done everything you possibly could have but the timing was all wrong great videos though and at least tetris is a win situation

@castlevania78 Thank you so much for the information. I know very little about arcade boards, which is one of the reason I watch Luke, to learn.

i have a wonder boy 3 how about if i change the battery when the board is on?
@thealternativej7994

Yes, it has been done before with a gameboy cart, but be careful where you poke your soldering iron. Otherwise replace the battery with the board off or get a Sega Resurrection Kit.
