Here's a video review of the SEGA Turbo arcade game. This was a pretty revolutionary game for its time as it featured cool third person graphics with a cool perspective view. Great game for its day and I remember playing it on the Colecovision most. Good stuff!

I remember playing this in a sit in cabinet when I was 5. I could barely reach the pedals. Amazing arcade btw.

This game used analog bitmap scaling. Voltage controlled oscillators were used to generate clock signals that were used to read the object roms as the screen was drawn, the slower the clock the longer it took to read the object out as the beam scanned the CRT and the larger it would be drawn on the screen.

This game was ground-breaking when it came out. No racing game before it had that sense of perspective and speed. Great to see it again!

Great video, John! I remember back in the late 90s to early 2000s when the arcade existed at the local mall, they had a cockpit Turbo. That was one of the only games I would play there. They ended up selling it for $200 when the arcade closed. I wanted it so badly, but didn't have room for it. I cried that day.

we had this game at my family's mini golf one year in the 90s, i got addicted to it even 12 years later. I loved the feeling of shifting up and down and weaving around the cars.

Tip5: After bonus, drive slower & be lot more cautious. Dont try 2passs cars on the curves. Dont go 2slow that u get ran over.Constant speeds. Once times up,u will can get more cars. The road narrows,making it harder.The Neon lit city at night, & the long suspension bridges, R my favs). I believe Ive gotten 4 or 5 level extensions deep. U have 2play like a speed stacker. Lightning quick direction changes, quick Pedal changes & quick emergency shifting.

Tip6: Make sure All pedal Optos R functional. Use test menu, 2check. Optos fail often, giving u less precise control. Control that u really need 2do well in this game. Clean & Lube shifter bearing area. Make sure spring is attached & giving pronounced snap.(else bend a little) Clean & Lube peddle hinge & pivots. Lube wheel. Clean dust off all optos. Make sure subwoofers working & cone surround not rotted. Adding a set of Aura bass shakers from parts express, might be fun too ;)

I played the ColecoVision version so much as a kid....but never got to play the arcade version. Nice to finally see the cabinet and game play. Thanks for doing this.

When I first played Turbo in the arcades in the early 80s as a kid'. It was the cockpit sit down version. I also remember how super difficult it was. lol Yeah I have the ColecoVision with Turbo and The Dukes Of Hazzard that work with the gas pedal and steering wheel.

That skidding sound was later used in Zaxxon, when the boss Zaxxon launches its missile at you if you fail to destroy it before being launched.

This game is pretty impressive for the time it came out. I seem to remember playing a sitdown cabinet of Turbo ages ago at a local arcade.

Turbo was released a year before Pole Position. I used to play this in a sit-down version at a local arcade.

Tip2: The gas is Optical. I think 3 positions, which translate to 4 speeds. No pedal = speed1. The gas then can be used to activate the other 3 speeds. This isnt quite as smooth as analog, however, its still very accurate & far better than using the Shifter to slow down. Thats a last resort, cause u lose too much speed & can lose position, as well as get rammed from the rear. Use featherlight & fast control of the pedal.

I loved Turbo at the arcade. I couldn't get a ColecoVision; "You already have an Atari," she said. I looked for it on Arcade Classic CD-ROMs for Playstation, but it wasn't there because it's "SEGA!". I think there also wasn't a 2600 port until 2010. Good job on restoring arcade cabinets and making videos. Now you just need some guest stars that can play the games well!

I remember playing this as a kid in a seaside town called rhyl I north wales uk , it was in a sit down cab not sure if it was dedicated cab or not ? but I played it a lot as it was only 10p a go and the newer stuff was 20p happy days id love to play the arcade cab again :)

Tips: Dont use the wheel like a typical wheel or u will never do well. Use the wheel like a giant tempest spinner. Whip is hard & fast,with 1 hand, letting it go. Then catch grab it when u reach the point where you want to stop turning. Even on straights, the road position constantly changes, so you have to follow its changes. U cant maintain a solid hold on the wheel cause of this, as well as a low spin-per-movement ratio. Spin & grab, gives you faster more accurate responses. Its more fun too

I loved this game every time i went in the arcades at the sea side star war and turbo was the go to for me i would love to have this arcade in my house but the site down version and the sound was amazing with the beautiful colours

Tip3: Shift from Low to High, in like under 2sec. Game reaching speeds fast & waiting too long is dangerous & wasting time. Tip4: Learn place & timing of corners. Being at the edge during a graphics change, can make a crash register. Try2 stay towards the middle nearing the shift-over times. Similarly, hill timing is also important. Near end of hill, may want to slow down..else when it levels out, cars come 2x as fast, and you ram into them.

I always liked Turbo. The Aladdin's Castle where i grew up had the cockpit version which was awesome! Nobody was ever playing it so I guess it wasn't that popular.

excellent game and video! You HAVE to keep this game. According to Wikipedia: Turbo set many precedents in racing video game design... Turbo was the first full-color raster display racing game to feature the third-person perspective, rear-view racer format, the first third-person racing game to feature scaling sprites of AI drivers, trees, and cityscape elements (including skyscrapers as tall as the screen), the first third-person racing game to feature multiple landscapes (cities, countrysides, seasides, bridges, and tunnels), as well as the first racing game to feature different times of day and weather conditions (clear weather and snow). Turbo was also the first third-person racing video game to feature hills in its race course.

Sega, the masters of parallax scrolling ^^ Never played Turbo when I was young, but I do know the game. Pretty hard, but a lot of fun to play. Such an awesome collection you have there. You won't believe how jealous I am right now (although, if I saw your electrical bill I probably wouldn't be) :-) Keep it up, you put a big smile on my face whenever you upload a new video.

I have found is there are only two wires connecting to the microswitch. From pictures I am seeing three. Is this the case? I do see one loose wire that is not connected to anything. Also, the other day my gas pedal only recognized two speeds instead of the four. It recognized 2 and 3. 3 when not pressed, 2 when lightly pressed, and 3 when pressing all the way. 2 days later this went away and it was back the normal. Would this be fixed by cleaning the optos? Not really sure what optos is

I mastered this game as a kid at the local arcade, “Worlds of Fun” in Jacksonville NC back in the 80’s. That was THE place to go to for teenagers to hang out. The difference between this game and the one featured here is you had to actually step inside the game to play it. All of the sound effects were in stereo so that made it even better. The top 5 had a place were you could put your name and I was sooo proud my score was number one for all of two weeks when it was shattered by a 10 year old girl!! My friends wouldn’t let me live that down. Any way, it was a great game but it was out of order quite frequently and I hate to agree with the other comments about why is this guy yelling!!

@dexx2233 I'm playing Yakuza 4 right now and just noticed that the steering wheel in a car in that game is on the right side, so I think you may be on to something there. Until you mentioned it, though, I never thought about that.

I have a Colecovision, but I never bought Turbo. I did buy Slither, which means I have the trackball. But no steering wheel. What I do have though is the Turbo board game by Milton Bradley. Yes, believe it or not, they actually made a board game version of this. Complete with four little Formula One race cars and an Ambulance.

clesn the optos regardless. As they age, the beam strength weakens. They may be failing. I think any IR optos can replace them. U will have to trace the wire for ur shifter. Dont want to short the game with the wrong wire. get a manual on ebay. my turbos in storage at the moment, sadly.

Love my Turbo. You'd get higher scores if you use the gas peddle. By switching to low you don't score as quickly as you do in high.

first thing would be to test the actual switch with a multimeter.. or just replace it. You could short out the pins so that the wires bypass the switch, but if its stuck on, then you would need to disconnect the wires to see a change. There should be a small toggle switch near the coindoor, which goes into the test menu. Also, Clean & Re-Seat all connections when game is powered off. Clean Pedal optos too,

Like or comment, if you played Turbo at Fairyland Arcade, Brooklyn! Bass was thumpin’! I really liked Super Off Road, my quarter lasted longer. I also loved Final Fight, TMNT, Simpson’s, Super Mario Bros., Bust-A-Move, Main Event Wrestling, Punch-Out, etc. from that era.

blk dog when i got the extended play i got i lasted about over half a minute when u go past the lamp posts u come on to a bridge and after that its the where the race started again but its sunset not daytime i think if u crash there its game over whether u have another life left or not but im not 100% sure up to that point i only got to that point about 3 times i wish it came to other systems

I’d disagree on the claim of this being the first driving game with a third person view (as distinct from the first game with a perspective view: that was likely Night Driver, though I expect Turbo was the first to do both at the same time). Sega Monaco GP came out a couple years before this, and was basically the same game but with a top-down perspective. I think it even had the ambulance, but it’s been a while... If you ever get a chance to play Monaco GP, I think you’d really like it. It’s the last word in twitch-action driving, and challenging yet super simple. Talking of which, I believe it’s all implemented with discrete logic rather than a microprocessor.

The first Monaco GP title came out in 1979, and then an improved version known as Pro Monaco GP the following year. Both were the last Sega titles to use discrete logic tech.

i hate to tell u this john but if u got the time limit to run out again when u got the extended play it wouldnt have being the end i think it wouldnt have being if it ran out 4 times either i think the game keeps going until u lose all your lives after the extended play if u get it i know u can crash as many times as u want before the extended play though

and on friday this week i found yet another video of sega turbo but in order to find this video type in hilarious arcade glitches and look for a uploaded picture and it will say sega turbo on it click on it and enjoy and believe me it might make u laugh it made me laugh infact i was in stitches when i was watching it cause of what the car was doing take a look and c what u think and let me know what u thought when youve watched it

the part i hated on this game was the snow cause of how slippery it was another thing i should have done was paced myself passing the cars which i never did but as u c in this video u saw him get to the extended play when i got to that part i got further than he d which was to the street area where the game starts but its sunset its a sega turbo video that lasts just over 9 minutes everytime he hit a car he glitched through it until coming to the end of the video

Okay.. surely this must be not only the first, but also the last, racing game to randomly have an ambulance show up and you have to pull over and let it pass? Just like real life I guess? That is the most random, weird thing I've ever seen put into a racing game. I did not see that coming.. just, LMAO.

I felt so stupid on Saturday when I met you.I think I've only seen a few pictures of you and I couldn't match the voice with the person. Most of the videos I've watch have been your arcade room tours and game reviews and I hardly ever see your face. When you told me you had a Simpson's Pinball Party that should have been a dead giveaway. I had wanted to do a review of Richie's Japanese Monaco GP Cocktail Table, but it was not meant for a 6'1 person.

@@Whitetiger187 No two Turbo arcade machines are the same...the tone and pitch of the engine noise varies between them depending on the condition of the PCBs and other things.
