Segmented Sycamore, Ebony and Veneer Vase

This small segmented vase consists of 144 Sycamore segments, with 152 pieces of black stained poplar veneer in between. I glued a piece of ebony on the top and bottom to cap off the segmented rings. I used Chestnut Products' Cellulose Sanding Sealer, Friction Polish and Burnishing Cream to get a durable gloss finish. This project is made with offcuts from a huge segmented vase I've been working on over the past couple of months (progress photos on Instagram). I really enjoyed making this smaller project after working on much larger items!

I first saw this technique done by Kyle Toth last year so I got some veneer to try it myself but I didn't get round to doing it. After I watched Sean Evelegh make something similar a couple of weeks ago I was inspired to attempt it!

Very nice segmented vase - it's a keeper. Thanks for not adding silly background music. I like hearing the tools.

Love the style of this vase dude! I’ve really wanted to do a brick style vase like this.

Thanks. If you make one with veneer, make sure not to do too many segments per ring or the glue will dry before you finish!

@@NathanaelGriffiths oh. That’s great info! Because I really wanted to try it with a lot! 😅

If you do then use a slower setting glue like titebond 3 and you should be fine.

Another great video. How do your ensure the length of the pieces are correct when cutting the wedges on the bandsaw?

Thank you! There is a stop block at the bottom right of the screen that I push the wood up to before I make each cut.

Another lovely job, Well done. Where did you get that great jig for the bandsaw to cut the segments?

16 with all this equipment? Are you going to become the woodworking version of alec teale? Lol (I'm not comparing you to him as you're your own person, I just can't help but notice similarities as he began smithing at 16 and made a shop at the same time as well, but clearly, you've been doing this for a while lol)

Beautiful job! Did you stain the veneer yourself or did you find a place in the uk selling that? And why do you cut the segments with the bandsaw when you have such a nice tablesaw, are they as accurate so you dont have to sand a ton before glueing up the rings?

Thanks! I used black dyed tulipwood that I got from the wood veneer hub. Bandsaw blades have a much thinner kerf than table saw blades meaning you waste less wood. The bandsaw jig I use also cuts all the segments perfectly so no sanding is required!
