Segwit, Native Segwit, and Legacy addresses are all still in use on the Bitcoin network and are compatible with one another - meaning, bitcoin can be sent between both types of Segwit and Legacy addresses and vice-versa.

so if i have certain quantities of bitcoin in exodus Segwit adress, can i send it to another legacy adress in another wallet and not segwit adress from exodus? it isn't problem right?

Well explained but I'm a little confused because I have two adresses starting with 1 and one adress starting with bc1 but I don't have an adress starting with 3

Let me try to un-confuse you, Delivator :) You have two "1......" addresses and a "bc........" address in Exodus Desktop. The middle address of your addresses is a new address that hasn't been used before. Exodus doesn't use the "3......." address type in our wallet to store its Bitcoin. (However, if you do connect a Trezor hardware wallet, then you will see the "3....." type addresses in Exodus, because the Trezor hardware wallet uses them.) That was a bit long but hopefully explains everything :) -cc

If you use a wallet that doesn’t support segwit and you send to a segwit enabled wallet could this result in loss of funds? Is there any tangible benefit using one or the other type of segwit address types?

Hey there, great question! If you send try sending funds to a SegWit address from a wallet that doesn't support SegWit, you'll encounter an address invalid error. On the other hand, Native SegWit addresses are backwards compatible, meaning that you will always be able to send funds from a Native SegWit address to a P2SH-SegWit or Legacy Bitcoin address. You can read more about it in our support article: support.exodus.io/article/1178-bitcoin-addresses-legacy-vs-segwit Native SegWit addresses starting with "bc1" are the newest address format types, whereas nested SegWit or wrapped SegWit take existing P2SH address - starting with a "3" - and put a SegWit address into it. This enables a high grade of compatibility to existing wallets, as every wallet is familiar with these addresses, but it needs around 10 percent more space than native SegWit addresses. Hello John, If you always send your BTC to your `bc1` (SegWit) address, you will experience the benefits of SegWit addresses. To clarify, there is no difference between the Bitcoin held on either address. There is no conversion needed, the Bitcoin remains constant. Tks for your video. But i have a little confuse , that is my exodus wallet send btc to my Binance is alway 1 address but when i send to Ledger wallet it changes address everytime. It is about exodus or ledger? Tks for reading and sorry my bad English.

Question: If we have a bunch of BTC in our wallet that was derived from various sources and probably has BTC legacy and segwit all mixed together. How then does a newbie like me (in spite of my handle) find out what he has got? This is necessary if we try to send BTC somewhere where say, for example, only BTC segwit is accepted.

Hello John 👋 Great question. Your wallet takes care of this in the background. SegWit address can also received BTC held in a Legacy address. The only issue that some services have with SegWit is that they do not send to SegWit as they do not support the feature. As Exodus does support SegWit you will not encounter an issue like this. @@exodus So, I obtained the bitcoin-addresses file and there were over 60 addresses there, but all the funds were in one address only, and it is a bc1 address. Thanks for helping me out.

This is a great question, Griezpi! Yes, you can send BTC from a Legacy address to a SegWit address since SegWit is a soft fork and it's backwards compatible. You can usually send from both address types to each other (legacy > bech32 or bech32 > legacy), but if you're withdrawing from an exchange and encounter any challenges sending funds to a bech32 address, they may be one of the many exchanges that doesn't support sending to that address type yet.-JE
