Seiko, a brand most often associated with affordable dive watches, also has a compelling collection of field watches with roots dating back to 1959 and the Seiko Laurel Alpinist. More recently, Seiko has found success with two of its field watches under the Seiko 5 umbrella, the SNK and SNZG, but collectors often griped about the too small or too large sizing of those two collections. In this video, I'll take a look at Seiko's new SRPG27, a new Seiko 5 with dimensions that neatly split the difference between the aforementioned cult classic field watches from Seiko.

I just bought one. I love it. Being an officer in the Royal Navy, I may find myself being rather wet (i.e. submerged in water) on occasion, for rather long and indeterminate periods of time, when it isn't my idea and I don't get a vote (i.e. I can't simply decide that I'm not going to be wet any longer). I need a watch that can take that kind of abuse in action working dress, but then also looks fine to wear to a mess dinner later that week. I also need a watch that is not too expensive and is reliable. This is that watch.

Tempted to get one of these. Funny how these cheap folded link bracelets with hollow end links and pressed clasps never seem to break on these budget Seikos and are often extremely comfortable yet they seemed to be absolutely loathed by so many in the community!

I just bought the watch and automatically bought a solid link milled clasp band for the skx, I have received the watch before the bracelet and might cancel the solid 2 link bracelet. Seiko's 1 link folded link bracelet feels and looks amazing. It just sounds horrible lol. I don't care about the sound.

I have a Presage Cocktail time with the same movement. (And a MiniTurtle with the very similar 4R35) This 4R36 is neatly precise! My checkings shows a precision around +/- 10 seconds per day. Very silent and smooth rotor! With a sapphire cristal, this SRPG will be perfect!! Also, no comparison with SNG's Sports. As a Seiko fanboy myself, this SRPG is on whole new level.

Got the SRPG39 (same watch, but with a blue dial and a leather strap) and like it. The 4R36 is a reliable movement, and pretty accurate. Makes for a good everyday watch - but is nice enough to pass as a dressy watch due to to the leather strap. With a metal bracelet or rubber strap, this would be good for swimming or snorkeling (100m water resistance). The price is reasonable, too. Recommendable.

I like that the indices are applied instead of painted on. I bought a brand new Seiko 5 dress watch for 20 bucks and it’s dial face is better looking than the Baby Alpinest. The Alpinest has painted on numerals and cost 650 bucks. The new Seiko 5’s are definitely a hidden gem.

I originally purchased my Seiko 5’s as a daily wearer. I quickly grew to the point where I liked to wear it more than any other watch. The wife loves hers too. It keeps the more expensive watches on the sidelines (Omega’s)… but we do like the Seiko’s a lot. A favorite for when we travel as well. Great looks and accuracy. And if it did get stolen, just buy another one.

This a great watch spec for the money. Good size and movement. Day/date is what I personally like for a field watch. Would be great with sapphire crystal but it’s understandable for the price point. Good mid step towards the alpinist. I wouldn’t mind replacing my solar SNE329 with this model which I wear while swimming or working around the house, walking around or general weekend non-desk job activities.

A year ago I wanted a first wear-everyday mechanical watch, and decided on the SNK809, partly because of its history, fame and look, but also BECAUSE of its size. I always wear a watch, but cannot bear having a giant watch on my arm. I used to wear a Fossil which is perfectly usable, but at 42mm is simply too big. I will keep my SNK forever but I'm definitely eyeing the SRPG39, which at just under 40mm's is till a good size for me, and incorporates more modern features and looks great for the money.

So much so, I just grabbed an 809 as well yesterday. It’s funny, what you consider small initially, you can really grow to love for that very reason.

So glad to see a few reviews and discussions on RU-vid about this watch, and especially from you! Just seen this and it really really did grab my attention from a near Orient mako 2 purchase to be honest! Like a lot of what the Orient is offering, but it's just that little wobbly crown and a tad too much just a paint finish dial rather than this lovely sunburst dial when comparing the blue dials together...but I really need to ask you Teddy, as I've seen this very watch on a site of a major Japanese site, then searching it on Amazon and seeing it there....comparing the two watches, the pictures anyway, near identical, and I mean in just about every way, and when looking hard I may actually be able to notice I think on both dials it states even the same movement inside to! However....!...on the Amazon uk site it's got some other sort of reference and sold as some other name, whereas on the Japan based site, it's just like this one you're showing here...!...with 'made in japan' in the dial, and also with a very different code or name set for it! Is it usual for Seiko to assign different names and also to omit logos or 'made in japan' print off international versions,.?...or are there indeed any differences? Other than the extra 88 British pound sterling import duty I'm going to have to pay?

I've had mine for 2 years, it's my daily driver. Consistently +/- 3 to 7 seconds per day with a timegrapher app. I sync it up to my "atomic clock" app on my phone about every week, it's usually about 20 seconds off. I think the 7s2x are under appreciated and its really a matter of perspective in considering whether the 4r3x is an upgrade or not. Back in the day the non hand winding movements like the 6206 or 6309(not cheap then, nos not cheap now) were considered ‘true automatics.’ Hacking and handwinding adds complications that can fail, not to mention a watch’s #1 vulnerability - the user. There are even old ww2 fliegers and field watches that don’t hack. not sure what the obsession is.

I wore a small Citizen field watch for 2 years. It is a good watch with GOOD lum, but it is a little too small for my preference. I also wanted an automatic watch, which the Citizen was not. After about half-a-year of research, I settled on buying this Seiko on a NATO strap. The size is perfect and I love the atheistics of it. I finally found that my favorite parameters for watch sizes are between 38mm-39mm. This fits great. Yet, it does not have good lum. I, then, started looking for a GREAT lum watch. I settled on a Lum-Tec watch, which is absolutely outstanding! Yet, I still come back to this Seiko as my daily EDC for the simple fact that it has a day/date window.

Hi Teddy. I’ve been watching your videos for a while. I was wearing the Casio Duro for a good while and now I finally just bought my first automatic watch which is this Seiko SRPG27. I was debating between this watch and the newer Seiko SSK023 GMT. I ended up valuing the day-date over the GMT currently but I think I might just have to get both haha! I wanted to thank you for all of your help and your excellent advice. I thoroughly enjoy your videos and your professional take on watches. The world of these mechanical and automatic watches has opened my eyes to wonder what else could be powered by the beautiful mechanical movements of these watches! I haven’t watched all of your videos yet but I was wondering if you have done a video looking into how various watch movements are built and developed and what kind of novel movements you would like to see in the future.

I just bought a beautiful vintage automatic Seiko with day date for about $30 on eBay. Works perfect. A much cheaper way to go. There are lots of them too.

Do they have the exhibition case back? That's literally all I'm looking for. Plus chronograph.

Day date is super useful in the field. I often lose track of what day it is when wearing a date only watch.

It's just me or the hands of the SNK800 series are still the best looking ones?

As a non-Seiko fan (too many bad experiences), my SNK809 with the NH36 movement is near perfect. I'm a big guy (6'3") but I love the smaller diameter that doesn't get in the way of my wrist or my life at all.

I bought one of these 2 months ago and I love it. I have an after market grey silicone band. My other watch is an omega seamaster de ville.

This looks really good! Seiko do make decent looking watches. The specs to cost ratio though ….. 🤷

Love the military heritage behind many watches. Do you know if there are any with a heritage specifically tied to the artillery or field artillery?

We can't forget the SNK381. It's in my opinion the best field watch dial Seiko makes. I gifted mine to my thirteen year old daughter.

Couldn't find a Hamilton Khaki in Thailand so I bought an olive green Seiko 4R36 instead. Therapeutic hand wind and saved a bunch of cash, great value.

Just for your info, I have a Seiko SRPG27 since about a month now, I had set the watch at the exact second of my phones clock, and it did shift less than a second in about a month... I knew Seiko is know for being pessimistic on their watch precision, but I have to say I am so surprised and impressed by the actual accuracy of by 270€ Seiko SRPG27.

Seiko should make this watch in a 37 or 38 mm case and without the day-date complication (and a resulting thinner case). I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Might even buy two of them.
