I already miss the old seiko 5 line. So many good watches! I agree that they're sometimes small, but then again once I put them on they're so comfortable being small.

The Seiko 5 was my first watch, a gift from a watch collector. So, I never knew about hacking and hand winding an automatic watch, until I bought a Tissot. But I love my 5, and I I’m turn have handed out 3-4 as gifts to friends and family. It’s the greatest proper starter watch.

Love the classic seiko 5's a lot more than the relaunched 5's (although they are cool too). the 37mm case is perfect and 7s26 is a great movement. I also have 4r26 and 6r15 and honestly never even miss the handwinding and hacking when I wear my classic Seiko 5's. non-hacking is actually less of a hassle when setting the time if you wear the watch over long periods. I really hope the relaunch won't cause Seiko to do away with the classic style 5's

Not bad. I've been toying with getting a SNKL23. Supposedly that's the Seiko 5 to beat. As well as a bit of mystery since they disappeared, and everyone thought they were dead. Only to pop back up last year.

Well Dave I found one at around 200 US dollars (as exchanged from the price in Euros) which I won't pay or I'd get one. At 150 dollars I would have. We generally pay in GBP anyway what Americans pay in dollars so if anyone says a 100 dollar watch I know it's gonna be 100 GBP. I followed your instructions to the letter on your other Seiko 5 "Rolex" video, even getting the bracelet from the same store that you used. The grey sunburst dial on that one is truly awesome and has great lume so I really do trust your judgement. In any case your "Explorer" is going to be a country mile better than the Benyar homage that I lost money on. Never again. You live and learn. Dave's Seiko 5 every time.⌚👍🙏✌️

Thank you for your work. Through your channel I've found an orient bambino to gift my dad at the best price and I also got to know the Guanqin GJ. Got that one in the white dial and black strap. The strap itself feels quite good on my wrist. Was able to wear it everyday for a week no problem. My watch did come with the NH36A, however I found it funny that the movement itself is colored copper, not silver as it usually is.

Great vid, the snk805 was my introduction to the world of automatic watches. The size never worries me (I have over 8 inch wrists) but by some act of witchcraft they never look too small. Personally I thought this looked really good on the MN strap, the only downside is the lack of hand winding.

Forgive me if this has already been mentioned, but Island Watch's ISL-53 or the 54 (no date) are the best value in an Explorer look. Sapphire crystal and a leather strap. The power plant is the Seiko NH 35, hand winds and hacks. Island Watch also sells an oyster-style bracelet that you can switch in and out. Black dial is the only option.

Great video... my SNKL23 just arrived and after popping it onto a dark brown leather strap it looks so nice and classy. I had to ditch the bracelet but this is my third Seiko 5 so I knew what to expect as far as the bracelet goes. I love the SNKL line so much...

Great video! Instantly subscribed. The SNKE61 draws some similarities with the Explorer as well. I'm using it as my beater when working as mechanic and partly thanks to the lume, it does a fantastic job at it. Also has the 12 6 9 in arabic layout, but in contrary to the SNKM75, all numerals, indices and hands are fit with almost diver-quality lume. Although it does also have 20mm lugs, the all-polished case of the SNKE61 seems less nice than the nicer shaped one of the SNKM75 with it's brushing. This does make it into a better beater where the minor scratches make the case in my opinion look better rather than worse and I completely love the watch. Massive shame Seiko discontinued the 5 range.

This is the best review of the Seiko 5 I’ve seen and everyone seems to be doing one now because of the recent release, of course. One nof the very best features of your vids is the time lapse comparison for the lume.

What is really cool about this watch is that you can upgrade it slowly, change the bracelet the crystal, the dial even the rotor can be customised ! So over years you can move from this cool 100$ watch to something looking pretty high quality

How is a smaller watch less comfortable? I have a 7.5 in wrist as well and I quite like anything up to a 38mm. Anything bigger is just gaudy imo.

Oh Dave, now you have done it... I really like this Seiko, and found it with the black dial in Amazon for $117.51. Jomashop also has it for $109, but given the small difference I rather purchase from Amazon. BTW, Amazon also has the white dial version which I think looks beautiful, but ordered the black. This review ALMOST tempted me to look for this watch as a lower price option instead of the Hamilton Khaki King which I've considered as my next purchase and first(only) field watch. Love the looks but that poor lume killed it for me personally. Love your lume comparison video!

Thanks Larry! The Hamilton is definitely a better watch, but also a much more expensive one! Although the lume on the Khaki King is also a little on the weak side, but definitely stronger than on this little Seiko!

The line is one reason I haven't yet bought the Khaki King yet and the other is just trying to be more patient in my purchases in case something better is found.I have lots of divers and enough dress watches but I think one good field watch will be enough. I need to get rid of some watches I don't wear. I have suggested that my son in Japan watch your channel.

Another great Seiko 5 explorer alternative is the SNX123 though like your choice finding one is a bit of a challenge, I found a project, the movement was good but the watch head needed refinishing which I did myself, I had a new crystal fitted & found a new oem bracelet (still pretty dodgy but I like it anyway) for £17 ($25) & it looks amazing. 19mm lugs but it isn't as bad as you think, 1/2 of my 18mm straps look OK & most of my 20mm NATOs go through no problem. Total cost £100 ($140).

The SNKE61 was my first automatic watch. A gift from my husband. I realize it's a "men's" watch, but I hate small, ladies watches. Can't see the dials haha. But the SNKE61 has a nice subtle design, very readable and reliable. It's still the watch that gets the most wrist time and hasn't lost it's accuracy over the years.

37mm is tha classic '' good taste'' size of watch for a gent . Fashion will swing back again just wait and see , Ive an eight and a half inch wrist and wont wear over 38mm , so much so I had to buy a 6538 to keep comfy ,,, well thats my excuse and Im sticking with it . Explorer is my daily wear though.

While I don't have the SNKM75, I do have the Seiko 5 SNK805 and the lume on it will last practically all night long, especially after having been outside on a bright and sunny day

New subscriber, first time viewer (except for your video about Jody at JOMW the other day). Seems one still can't find this watch sat any of the usual sites, but it does look like something in my wheelhouse. Most of my watches run from around 40 MM to 42, with a few larger and a few smaller, from 36-38 MM. Because I have a slightly larger than average wrist (8 1/4-8 1/2 inches), I usually go with the 40-42 MM, but I do like the look of a lot of the classically-sized watches. I'm not as much of a bracelet guy as a leather or NATO strap guy, so ditching the bracelet wouldn't break my heart. Thanks for an interesting and informative video, Dave!

You have a Lunar Pilot too!? I knew I clicked on the right video review of a 7s26 5! Fwiw ... I also have Orients and Citizens. Citizen owns Bulova and Seiko owns Orient. I have found, in my experience at least, that Seiko/Orient lume stays brighter longer than Citizen/Bulova.

My very first automatic watch was a Seiko 5, model SNK385. It's a stylish and traditional dial but is a bit small for my taste. It had definitely looked better if the case size had been increased from the 37mm to 40mm. And I have a 17cm wrist. The lume looks similar to the watch in this video but the hands of SNK385 is much better!

I have the Seiko SARG-009 and that’s a great field watch that’s considered Seiko’s Explorer but it has the even numbers on the dial that gives it its own identity and not a copy of the Rolex Explorer. I also have the Orient Chicane which mimics the Explorer but is discontinued and hard to find.

Replacing the strap is absolutely step 1, 2 and 3 :))) Adding a nice nato strap won't empty the wallet, but lots available i reckon. I do prefer the sport versions. And there are plenty cheap versions. Also, CHECK auction sites! They often go for like 250 euro (new sport versions).

I have several seiko 5 watches bought between 1989 and around 2010,all nice watches but the 2 oldest from 1989(7009-3140 )feel higher quality than the newer ones including the bracelets.

Nice Seiko 5, it comes into mind of homage of Datejust (non-flute bezel) or Oyster Perpetual with its colour option dial. Yet more useful than them with Day Date function.
