In today's episode of Watch and Learn, we will explore the SKX007, the iconic Seiko diver. This watch is produced in two variants; the "K" version and the "J" version. We will discuss and show you the differences of these two watches, which appear to be identical from 2 feet away. We will do the same for the SKX009 (same watch, but with a Pepsi bezel).
To view the Seiko divers, please visit our website: longislandwatch.com/shop/?sea...

Hi Marc!! In 2005 I bought my first Seiko skx007K and in February of this year I bought a Seiko009J and I am so happy I did it !! I do not get tired of looking at those watches!!!

It was a pleasure to see this video again , I bought my 007J as well as the beautiful jubilee bracelet from you around 5yrs ago (I’m wearing it today!) , this is the watch that sent me down the rabbit hole of watch collecting and now it sits proudly among other Seikos , Omegas , GShocks , Marathons , etc. and I’m still as fond of it as the day I received it , I will never part with it as it is a starting milestone in my beloved watch collection ! I really appreciate the knowledge and thoughts you put out there ! Thanx Marc !!

While you are totally right I still bought an SKX007J. The Made In Japan on the dial's bottom is so iconic in my modest opinion. Thank you for such an informative video on the World's most iconic piece.

I purchased the 009 "K" version from Long Island Watch about a month ago. It keeps excellent time running + 2-3 seconds a day. So I wouldn't be too concerned about not getting the "J" version. As a side note, Marc has an excellent reputation on numerous watch forums, as he stands behind what he sells.

I like the J model over the K model. Years ago, before I knew the difference, I bought Seiko watches exclusively because I believed they were manufactured in Japan. Even though their is little discernible difference, we know that K models are not manufactured or assembled in Japan, whatsoever. If I had wanted a Malaysian or Hong Kong manufactured watch, that would have been another story. I also like Orient watches a lot too, and have for years. The Japan stamp on Orient watches is a plus for me, and others too...

As TGV have mentioned in his comparison video, the J version have a slightly darker/ navy blue bezel while the K version have more of a royal blue/ lighter shade of blue. I was able to easily distinguish the two even with your thumb covering those "more clear" giveaway signs. :)

Hi there, great video. I'm just getting into watches and have just ordered myself a SKX007j as I was specifically going after a Japanese one. From my research I believe they are no longer in production so I was really glad to see the place I had ordered it from only had 2 in stock. My question is, the day wheel comes in English and Arabic, do all the j watches have this configuration? Ideally to keep it Japanese I would prefer it to be in English and Japanese, I'm finding it hard to find a concrete answer, I read somewhere the J models all have English/Arabic combinations only but am not sure if it's true and if it is, is it possible to swap the part out?

Another Great video. Seems like every forum has a raging debate about this very thing. I've seen it said, that none of these are made completely in Japan. Like you said, what does it matter, it's a Seiko, so it's got to meet their criteria no matter where it's assembled. Add to the fact that we are talking for the most part a 200.00 time piece.. Thanks again Mark... Great Review....

Another informative video. I'd heard that the only difference other than the lettering, is that the supervisors of the ones with made in Japan on them were Japanese and they indeed could be made in different countries. I have an SKX 007K1 and all the indices and bezel line up, it's beautifully made and I like the less fussy dial. I have a SNZ15J1 and although also beautifully made, I wouldn't say it was any better than my SKX007K1.

I have the SKX007K. I recently bought the SKX009J. In my opinion, the J version is not worth the price difference because as I compared the watches side by side, I noticed that both watches have imperfections (chapter ring is not perfectly lined up with the bezel and hour indices, lume on the hour indices are not painted perfectly centered, etc.). HOWEVER, my J is more 'imperfect'. The chapter ring misalignment is very obvious, the lume on some of the hour markers are really off-center and it seems that the dial in the J is not as dark as the K model. Don't get me wrong, I love both watches and still wear them both. I just came to the conclusion that the manufacturing process is very similar between the K and J models. In my case, I just got the better made K model than the J model. But if you really want the 'Made in Japan' print. Go get the J.

I've had two "J" Seikos-- an SKX and an SNZG15 (military style). The rotor movement sounded less "scratchy" than one of my Ks, but of the four SKXs I've owned, only the J had a crooked chapter ring. If you're going to do a dial mod, just get a K.

Intresting, I could immediately spot the SKX009J every time because the red seems to go deeper on the J's, and the K's seems to go brighter. One of the reasons I bought a J. But holding them side by side the colors looked almost exactly the same and I really couldn't see much of a difference.

Nice comparison Mark. I've seen another J Vs K comparison somewhere before where differences were pointed out (I can't remember where) the differences as I remember related to the colour of the dial and the transition between the polished and brushed edges. However I'm sure there was no comparison regarding when they were made like you did, so that may invalidate the other comparison I saw. I've bookmarked your video as I get asked this same question when people ask me to mod a SKX for them. Cheers.

Not being funny, my J is less accurate, has an imperfection like a dirt mark can be seen on the inner surface of the crystal, slight misalignment of the minute and hour hands (as seen when minute hand points at 12 for instance). It's like the Seiko 5s, being 'made' in Japan does NOT imply it is a better version, not at all; sometimes it could be the opposite, hence the K version is already good enough.

Quality is exactly the same, just that J versions are ASSEMBLED in Japan. Having 21 Jewels and Made in Japan is just for the purists amongst us. At the end of the day, whether you have a J or a K, you have a great Seiko watch. Just enjoy wearing them. Any of this Made in Japan is purely for marketing purposes
@Ilestun
@Ilestun 4 года назад
Quality control is very poor on Seiko entry level watches like skx. The differences spotted in this video could easily happen between two made in Japan versions of the skx. I would rather say : pour quality control is the same for both J and K versions.

@@Ilestun I agree, but something has to give. For a couple hundred dollars, you get an ISO certified 200m dive watch, with a unidirectional bezel, fantastic lume, and a very tough in-house automatic movement. I don't know what else someone could ask for for their money. I've had my SKX for 17 years, and I'm just now getting ready to send it in for its very FIRST service! And not because anything is wrong with the watch, but because I don't trust the seals anymore, and I'm sure the watch is no longer water resistant. Also the bezel barely turns anymore. I don't know if its rust in there or just dirt. But I've used the watch in the ocean hundreds of times, and ocean water can rust anything. Either way I expect that after the service I'll get another 17 years out of it.

It looks like the J has lume 'spots' that are smaller and more cleanly applied than the K? I think that one is secondary French rather than Spanish. It also looks that the the hands on the J are mounted with a darker centre than on the K? Any opinions?

I’ve owned both 007’s ... j’s last much longer and aged better. The k’s quality and finish does not hold up as long. I had one of my j for 16 yrs until i lost it while surfing. Got a new one and it’s been 7 seven yrs. then it just got stolen last week. My 2 k’s are both out of commission, one just died, the other’s bezel just faded after 3 years. So I decided to get a new j, which just came in today. Being a die hard 007 user, trust me 007J is the true 007!

I've heard of this also on the web. Not sure how true it is. Recently bought from Marc at Long Island Watch a Seiko skx009j and have been very happy. Everything aligned up perfectly. Had the crystal changed to Sapphire, Blue Bezel with Lume, and Blue Chapter ring. Strapped on a Hexad bracelet to make it more beefier on my 7" wrist! I really don't think I would have bought one if I didn't see Marc's videos. That's what made me pull the trigger!! Highly recommend him.

Hi, When i purchased my SEIKO SKX009K2 version from Japan at 2001, they were marketing in 2 types: First model with the silikon rubber bracelet, written "21 jewels" on the dial and second with the jubilee stainless bracelet, nothing (21 jewels) on the dial. First model was naming SKX007(or 9)K1(similar J model like you said), second SKX009K2. My watch serial number is 411984 and i dont still understand when or where it was produced!?

The term "made" is misleading here. It should be "assembled" ...
