As good as Seinfeld was, and as good as Michael Richards was in it, to this day I'm baffled by the fact that Jason Alexander never won an Emmy for George.
@@FilterBySubgenre First one I thought of. Newman. George's parents were pretty goddam funny too. The line when George said his father wears sneakers in the pool? If you're old enough to remember that, it's gold, Jerry. Gold. I was stealing Kenny Bania's line.
A buddy of mine in college reminded me so, so much of Kramer. He'd come over to the apartment at the most random times as if he lived there, you never knew what he was going to say or do next, he always ate my food, and he'd get into the most bizarre, inexplicable situations (good and bad). He even had another set of friends I never met. I always felt like Jerry, sort of watching the weekly spectacle unfold and occasionally getting wrapped up in it... We all need a Kramer in our lives to keep things interesting. 👍
I've got an ex gf who was just like a female version of Kramer. Did all the same shit your college buddy did and more. "Ya sit around here all day, you contribute nothing to society!" Meanwhile she was unemployed and living with her mom. She'd dump me, a few days would pass then "PLEAAAASE!! I TAKE IT ALL BACK!! I LOVE YOOOUUU!!!"... She didn't steal vinyl from any old people but she did steal records from her autistic roommate (when she did move out of her mom's) only to pawn them off on me. "WE GOT AL JOLSON HERE! AL JOLSON!!"
I had a Kramer in my life. And like him he always had the million dollar business idea. One was a fleet of luxury vans with strippers for bachelor parties. It’s not a bad idea 😂
The most brilliant thing was the simple fact that he was the only decent one of the four on the show: they were cold and indifferent toward almost anyone and anything. Kramer had a lot of heart.
LOL, you're so right. I always wondered what was that made him so special. yeah, he's honest, the rest of them live to lie. Kramer, for the better or the worse, was incapable of lying or hating, unlike Jerry, George and Elaine. And he was the only optimistic one, the only one who believed in people.
Amazing to think, this show started just over 30 years ago. Yet watch it today and it still holds up with humor, topics, no signs of aging. I know the word" classic" is overused, but this show may be the all-time classic.
Agreed. I’ve watched this show several times start to finish, and it’s just excellent. Excellent writing, excellent characters. I love how the story elements tie together so seemingly effortlessly in many of the episodes.. Total adoration for this, and it’s a definite classic.
Obviously some of the plots wouldn't work now because of cell phones, but you still almost don't even realize it when watching the show. It really feels like it hasn't aged at all.
@@jakelm4256 Yeah, the cell phone thing is what immediately came to my mind. So many situations where a cell phone would have solved all their issues lol
@@bigbowlowrong4694 That's a narrow minded rationale, it's like saying "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" is not a timeless show because now we have computers.
I was born in 1980 so I was lucky enough to watch Seinfeld during the original airings. I'm 40 now and can still watch the same episode twice in one day if it's re-run at different times or on different channels. It's a timeless masterpiece.
Me too I was born in 1994 and started watching it in May 2006 - March 2007. My favorite episodes were The Betrayal and The Parking Garage. The first episode I ever saw as a young child was The Couch. Though I remember for some reason thinking it was peanut butter stained on Jerry's couch instead of pee.
There's been some quality American sitcoms over the years but for me Seinfeld is the funniest... Seinfeld's 'Marine Biologist' is one of the funniest sitcom episodes ever made
Jerry the scene in the diner where George reveals the golf ball he retrieved from the whale was dumped on Jason Alexander at the very last minute and Jerry's look of awe is from him being amazed that Jason hit it out of the park.
Michael was a genius, I mean the things he did with the character were just exceptional. I have seen the complete series multiple times but he still cracks me up.
i remember living in San Diego and every day after Seinfeld was on everybody at work would be sharing the highlights of the show and laughing about it. I aften felt left out bc i was going to night shool and usually missed the show. i finally caught up. it was a big part of the 90's
“i’m Kramer!!” This was very emotional. A very memorable character that lifts you up when you’re low, together with all his other buddies and charcters on the show.
As Larry David said - Kramer provided all the action. Without his brilliant slapstick it was just people standing around talking to each other. Hope Michael Kramer is ok these days. He should know his genius on Seinfeld still makes people laugh all over the world.
+w roberts Kramer provided the broad comedy everyone could enjoy. Every successful comedy, nay tv show, nay enterainment product, works on multiple levels. Smart witty comedy that can go over peoples heads, and relatable sillier fare for these people as well.
The show worked cause you had 2 stand ups writing it, one starring in it, just a simple guy with comedic skills...2 strong actors, George and Elaine, and the physical comedy of Kramer. It's this mix that brings genius. Like the show Louie, it works cause you got a comic playing with professional actors.
what's great about the cast of Seinfeld, is that they own those characters. truly each actor shows pride. even the writers and producers. everyone involved was meticulous in their craft. it is exemplary comedic genius on all levels. that is why it has stood the test of time. there will never be another show like it. the actors were all perfectly cast and blended together so well. ❤
It became a nightly tradition during the pandemic for me to watch Seinfeld to go to sleep and I just never stopped. This cast, these stories, and Kramer's comedy in particular just never cease to entertain and make life worth living.
Okay, if we're all talking about fave scene of Kramer, is at the 17:34 Mark when he starts drinking the beer in a glass mug and smoking a cigarette at the same time, then burping loud after he looks pensively calm at the other actor with no excuse; is pure comic genius. Thanks for keeping it on film to show us his physical gag comedy!
He did that in the spur of the moment of the scene without preplanning it. I saw an interview with the actor who played the scene with him and he said that Michael was just supposed to take a drink of the beer. Instead, he chugged the whole thing and burped the smoke. The expression on his face after he burps is pure comedic genius.
Having his first name be Cosmo was pretty genius, really. It was still a weird sounding name that fit the character so both names became interchangeable.
One of the best *male* physical comedians Kaitlin Olson takes the cake for best current female physical comedian ~ between Sunny and the Mick, she's absolutely stellar, and very reminiscent of Richards
John Ritter was on the same level. My wife and I have been working our way through Three’s Company, and he was brilliant. If someone wants to argue that Richards was better, I won’t fight you. Richards was as good as I’ve seen.
this is by far the best sitcom ever made. nobody else even comes close. yet. the brilliant performances of the actors are probably the key, though the rich ironies suggested in the scripts helped make a perfect marriage.
I was a little boy when this was on and didnt watch until it's syndication on TBS like 10 or so years ago i think (back when Daily Show was funny). I had no idea what i was missing in Seinfeld. This show has since become one of my favorites.
Im 31 and remember at times when I stayed up late during the week when my brother was babysitting me watching them with him. I obviously didn't understand what I was watching I just happy to be up this late. later when I was about 16-18 my brother got all the series on dvd and he was watching it again but im really watching for the first time from then I was hooked and immediately got the humor. I appreciate now for what they did for future sitcoms. I live in the UK which it wasn't that big, I can get because it got shown late but when I make references to it, such as daily life of 'nothing' such as I have a friend who dances the way elaine does … cant hit a beat. its because I get it and love it soo much I would show a clip but because I think it was so unappreciated or maybe over shadowed by brit comedy I find it hard when they either don't get it or because they haven't heard of it dismiss the comedy genius that the show is. this is my appreciation from over the pond to one of the top shows ever. I love it and I still cant stop watching and finding it hilarious, purely because it was life and real to a degree and most people can relate to it , either if it strikes the same opinion about a scenario or its happened to them. I appreciate my brother for bringing it to my full attention.
The comedy writing team of Jerry and Larry Davis is like Lennon and McCartney with writing music. Whether is exactly equivalent is debatable but both are the top of their craft and both are considered the best and both certainly made a lot of history.
Bloody legend. I know these guys know how to act and therefore pull off seemingly sincere shit, but I can’t believe that they didn’t truly believe all the lovely compliments they gave him. It seems as if he is dead the way they go on! Inspirational for any budding actor.
I will mention Carrol O’Connor as Archie Bunker. Check out the episode where Michael broke his chair. Archie has some classic moves when he discovers that the chair is missing.
The best reason for me to watch Seinfeld has been hands down KRAMER aka Michael Richards, you kind Sir simply stole the show and manage to captivate me even today as I watch reruns of this epic comedy show during these unprecedented times.
When in the 90's Seinfeld was advertised as a new show with the funniest comedian I thought yeah right. I became addicted, I can tell you about every episode LOL George is my favourite.
I've started rewatching Seinfeld on Netflix, and I had forgotten just how funny it is. The humor all STILL works. It's a truly great show. Watching The Contest again - that episode is just pure genius.
Michael's a genius. He apologized over and over about something we've all done in some weird way--made idiots of ourselves or been cruel/inappropriate. Tons of laughs--we love u, buddy.
Especially Woodburn! All those physical outbursts were great, esp Mick tackling him. I want to know which one of them came up with the idea of a guy half Kramer's size being able to take him down!
His absence on the "The Chinese Restaurant" was definitely noticed. It was still a great episode but I can't help but think that he would have made it stupendous.
Sooner Arrow agreed...Jerry has said in the earlier episodes Kramer was written to be a loner who just lived in the building and never went out...I don't think jerry and larry knew what they had in Kramer until later in the shows running.
Jerry said Richards used to go on Leno those years, in speaking that he had seen Richards before Seinfeld. Leno started the Tonight Show in 1992. Seinfeld aired in 1989.
cpmenninga the alt right are something (I lean right myself but hate mike pence/mitch McConnell type) but I wouldn't say douche bag. That's an exclusive purview of the left
I was a Seinfeld addict, definitely. I'd stay up late to tape (and edit) it, because the TV channel in the UK messed around with the broadcast times, (sometimes a show would be on late or postponed.) :-( The whole cast were superb. I simply can't imagine any other actor playing those parts.
I binged all 9 seasons on Netflix and I'll tell you. I'm crushing on Kramer! Lol. Richards executed Kramer perfectly. He was so entertaining and what makes it even deeper is the contrast of actor and character. Its just wonderful. Seinfeld is so timeless. Love it.
That scene where Elaine is mad about the bike, slams the door and Kramer crashes into it always gets me lol. There must be dozens of Kramer top ten lists lol (and if there aren't, there should be!)
"All this time I'm trying not to be me. I'm afraid to face who I was. But I'm Cosmo, Jerry. I'm Cosmo Kramer. And that's who I'm going to be. From now on that's who I'm going to be. I'm Cosmo!"
Kramer was always my favorite character in Seinfeld, and always will be. Michael Richards brought something to that show that I think made it as great as it was. If not for him and how he did that character, I don’t think the show would have been as big, as funny, or as legendary as it became. Larry David and Michael Richards were the real components that made it so great.
Michael Richards certainly was a great part of the show but take out George and you pretty much don't have a show. Take out Kramer and you still do. Not as good but you can't still have something. Kramer removed the tension George brought into the room. But without the build up, the Kramer character wouldn't be as funny. They worked great as a team.
We only laugh our asses out looking at him. Very little do we know about the kind of psychological pressure Richards must be undergoing portraying that character. It's not just a comedy. It's a brutally honest effort by each and everyone of them. This is some serious stuff. It's definitely no joke.
Psychological pressure...eh, he was playing Cosmo Kramer, not Oscar Schindler, don't get me wrong he clearly put a lot of effort into the timing/physical element etc. but this was a fluffy, occasionally darkly comedic sitcom, not a weighty drama.
HAL 9000: Look Dave, I can see you're really upset about this. I honestly think you ought to sit down calmly, take a stress pill, and think things over. DAVE: You don't have to worry about me. I won a contest.
All four of them were my favorite characters at different points during the show....it just depends on the episode. Over all though....I think George, he was the funniest I think. Im a George guy, I have the t-shirt where George is posing sexy on the couch...
They were all great but, it switches for me too. I liked George a lot in the early seasons but less so in the last few because he becomes less of a dynamic character and more just an angry guy who yells. Elaine has a lot of good odd ball moments scattered throughout the series. Jerry was the most consistent start to finish, and of course Kramer is just a loveable mad man
