Laminated isolation devices are made of laminated rubber and steel plates with a lead core. The rubber provides damping characteristics same as the lead since it is very ductile and can deform laterally. The steel supports the vertical load transmitted to the ground.

@@786otto Yes you are right but only if we buy it from ‘them’. Maybe it is time we study other designs (not rubber) and try to invent a cheaper but equally effective method? I was thinking a solid ball between two solid concave disks mounted on top of each other and attached to each foundation column which can isolate a two-storey house from ground horizontal movement and center itself back when earthquake stops. Not easy but sounds possible, doable and cheaper. 😉
