Seizing a Rope - Seizing an Eye in a Rope
In this video I show how I seize an eye into a rope. When seizing a rope via this particular method, I do it for decorative purposes when making something like a soft shackle. I think that if you want to seize and eye into a rope for lifting purposes, then this method may not be suitable.
As a starting point is is worth using an eye spliced cord, or if not able to eye splice then a clove hitch or a timber hitch as a starting knot. The main reason being is, that the initial knot needs to have lower profile as possible.
If you feel as though it requires a little more security, you could also coat the seizing with a little of the finishing solution (link below).

You do have a desperate disinclination to getting to the point. 😀

This is, in effect, a sheer lashing. I do agree that the timber hitch is a better way of starting it off given rhe relative sizes of the cordage involved.

08:28 You say, that this type of seizing is not strong enough for an eye seizing. What type of seizing is strong enough for eye seizing? I thought, these round seizing you can use for eye seizing???

Again you read my mind. I'm using seizing to make a safety line for my safety line, but I'm using the round seizing variant, where I haul it as taught as possible with a marline spike hitch, then do a second set of covering turns. Where I have an eye I using 2 seizings. I'll upload a picture. I got the technique from my favourite book The Rigger's Apprentice.

Yes, when I researched this subject, I found that there were quite a few variants of this. I just selected the one that looked the best. Will be interested to see your photo.

I'm planning to use this seizing on finishing a rope halter. The halter ends with two lines wrapping around the back of the horses head and ties into a loop on the other side. Seizing the ends with paracord makes it easier to tie, and gives me approx 3 ft of paracord to use (if needed) when trail riding, eg a temporary repair to broken tack or to tie open/close a gate. The pcord is convenient as seizing but doesn't negatively impact the halter if it's removed. Nice touch with the low profile; that even improves it for my projects.

Thanks. Just what I needed. Would it be correct to assume that, if you make a loop with an overhand knot, that degrades the strength of the shackle, while making your way does not?

Nice look. It is much easier to position a seizing than a splice, which can be very helpful, depending on the application. They make a great look, for my eye, anyway.

Good video. After tying the timber hitch was there a reason you did the turns up the rope? If you started further up you could go down the rope and trap the end of the timber hitch under the seizing.

I LOVE your videos. I am learning tons of stuff!!! Thanks for sharing! Question:L what would be the procedure if I want to seize an eye for lifting purpose?
@KnottingKnots
@KnottingKnots 2 года назад
I am not sure that seizing alone to create an eye would be strong enough. I personally would either splice and eye in a rope or create a loop knot at the end. Now off to find out how strong seizing a rope is???? 😉 😉 😉

Use a Seizing Mallet, three seizings on a sreel hawser if done properly is as strong as any eye splice, it's used regularly in lots of applications

Well, one would never start with a hitch then doing a seizing. Lay the end under the first few turns and let the seizing lock the end or tuck the end under a strand and then let the seizing be a secondary lock. The to turns shall be tightened properly using a marlin spike and a marlin spike hitch. The doing the square knot a needle can of course be used, but a twisted steel wire with an eye fitted to a wooden handle would be thinner and reduce the risk of getting slack in the seizing. This was a technique used then making pilot ladders which had about the same diameter rope as the one used in this video and they looked perfect the we did them. If done the right way it would look good even for Johnny. On the positive Johnny’s videos are always filmed in a way that makes it easy to see what he’s doing.

Good morning, have been a follower or you’re work for some time, and I should like to take the opportunity to say thank you for many useful knots used in many a project. What I should like to ask is, is it possible to do some projects, like the covering on you’re burner or maybe a bell pull (I used a basic one, with a carabiner for a pull handle on my pool pump cover, which is located under a trap) or even sea beckets. Warmest Regards, and avid follower, Garry Thomas from Sydney Australia Ps .... just love the sound of the clock in the back ground!

Are you more of a practical or decorative knotter?

Johnny Debt I like to think I’m more decorative ....... how ever, my wife thinks they are neither! I fish in cold climes so my boat has the appropriate metal parts covered with decretive .... along with my walking stick - steering wheel - etc! The fishing group I fish with, all have “nice” painters, key rings ..... well you get the picture! I thank you for taking the time to read and then take the interest to reply. Warmest and most Sincere Regards. Garry Thomas

So what would be a strong eye splice, if this is just decorative?
@KnottingKnots
@KnottingKnots 3 года назад
You could use the Marlin Eye Splice: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-l_bxz8Jn8E8.html or the Eye Splice: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9Ceg1-KAPpo.html They would be a more secure way of putting a loop into the end of a rope. Thanks for taking the time to view and also make a comment, very much appreciated.

The anchor hitch is often given added security by seizing the running end to the standing end.

Late to the party here; but for this best results, the seizing should typically be between 1 and 1.5 times the width of the rope.
@KnottingKnots
@KnottingKnots 6 лет назад
I think I might have learnt something here, I know this is the case for whipping, but never thought about it for seizing. As you are late, all that is left at this party is the washing-up. :-)

My understanding is that whipping is done on a single line, where as lashing is used to keep two lines or object together.
