The days of having to search through tons of brushed speed controllers to find the right one for you is behind us. The brushed ESC selection is much smaller nowadays which makes selection a bit easier, but you still be armed with the knowledge on what to look for. And of course you've come to the right place to find answers. John Holmes of Holmes Hobbies takes a look at some popular ESC's he has experience with and tells you what you should look for when picking a speed control for your trail truck, crawler, basher or other RC rig.

I have the quick run 1080. I have it programmed for 6V bec. I run a 35kg servo and it runs it along with my 6V servo winch and dig micro servo just fine. My rigs are trail trucks and not specifically rock crawlers although I do take them in creeks often.

Another great video, John! One thing that you did not bring up, the freewheeling function on the HW1080. It's item 15 in the programming menu Its default setting is disabled, but if you enable it, you can set your drag brake high enough to hold you on a steep incline and use the throttle to drive down the incline, without run a way truck syndrome. My typical setup is a HW1080 with a HH 13t Crawlmaster, on 3s. I pretty much only run 2 servos. The Savox 1230 and a Reefs 422HD. I've ran them with a BEC and without. Even without the BEC, I've never had a brown out and power and speed seem to be the same. Both of those servos have a stall load of 5A and I believe the 1080 has a 6A peak, according to a HW rep I spoke with. I'm sure for longevity, a BEC would be a good option.

Ive been running Power HD WP23 servos with 319oz on your BR XL for around 2 years and on the Hobbywing 1080 for around a year on a SCX10 and SCX10II both on 3s, 1.9 wheels and both trucks are just under 7lbs, the 1080 gets warmer than the BR XL but its still only warm ad no issues.

The hobbywing 1080 has a selectable internal BEC 6v or 7.4v, with the program card. More than enough for the servo i use. 17kg servo. PowerHD. I run it in my wraith set up with a 35t heavy-duty tekin motor. Love the hobbywing stuff.

So my old AXIAL ESC had NO problem running 4s all day with an AWESOME old Holmes Cobalt Puller 14t brushed motor as long as I had the castle BEC it worked great. And the old sidewinders could run brushed or brushless motors on 4s lipo also. Don't listen to the rules. Run it.

Pretty soon here I'm grabbing a HH brxl and a crawlmaster expert 540 16t. So we will see if your bec will do! I'm sure it will. The jx is not waterproof but its 9 dollars. Hi John please I need your help! My TRX 4 was broken for months everything fried. So I wanted the best, your company told me to buy a BRXL and Crawlmaster 10t I had no clue what to buy. Now my cheap 20kg servo has no power. My stock SCX, Red Cat and other TRX4 have no problem running that servo all with light kits. Your company now told me I need a BEC. How can that be? I spent over $200. And the worst part is I thought maybe the new servo was bad and with crippled hands spent 4 hours putting another new 20kg in only to have the same result. And it also has been going into neutral which I just found out can happen possibly. Please tell me there is a way to fix it. I do have a castle link. Thank you
@HolmesHobbies
@HolmesHobbies 5 лет назад
A BEC is always a good idea, and sounds like what you might need. The lack of BEC is likely what fried your stock ESC as well. Although it might have provided more power, that is a lot of load on stock internal BECs and they don't do it for long.

@@rcintro1489 Back when I developed this ESC, it was enough for all the servos on the market. 20kg is right on the cusp, but lower quality servos are quite amp hungry and need twice the amps of what we had (that cost a lot more) back then as well.

The big craze today is using an ESC to control the speed of a trolling motor mounted on a kayak. There are many videos out there using the Hobbywing 880 and a servo tester to control the direction and speed. I purchased the above products to build my own, but the ESC voltage input wires are16 gauge. My trolling motor can draw up to 40 amps, so I am concerned about connecting an 8- or 10-gauge wire to the 16-gauge wire and cranking the motor up to draw those high amps for a period of longer than a few minutes. Is my thinking correct? Thanks for any input.

Yeeaaaahhhhh...... So, back when I had my first XMaxx (before the "waterproof" versions came out) I was up in the mountains near Seattle at Snoqualmie Pass. Went to the X-Country Sno-Park to play with my rig, right? Was rippin' it around on the trail, sent it up, it caught a rut in the snow, hooked hard left and LAUNCHED INTO THE VOID.... 😂 Finally touched ground and cartwheeled the REST of the way down the embankment and into the ice cold creek. Took me a good half hour to fight my way down through all the fresh powder, grab it out of the water and then get the both of us back up. 😂😂😂 Brr.

I bought my first traxxas trx-4 Bronco 2021 and will run the original ESC from traxxas. Off course with the original traxxas BEC and the original 400 oz traxxas servo BUT i make one essentiell change on it and that's a holmes hobbies TorqueMaster Pro 550 21t and it transform the whole rig to an other Level. Awsome Motor. I use nearly only HH Motors in my 16 rigs and mostly with an HW1080 but this is a great combo. If the traxxas ESC will die, i put in an HW1080 also. But for now it's an great choice and drives awsome.

Can I use a brushed esc (like the ones shown) on a 1/10 on road touring sedan? I have an old hpi rs4 rally (belt driven) chassis I want to revive. I’m not too concern about speed just smooth acceleration, I’m just worried I might snap a drive belt with brushless power since it’s close to impossible to get replacement drive belts for it.

I run separate 6 cell Ni-MH for each esc which happen to be Novak Super Roosters along with 2 - Hi-tec HS-5645MG servos. Since I bought your crawlmaster pro motors & did away with my 66:1 reduction units my 1:6th krawler does not hold. I'm using the smallest pinion which is 11T & I'm looking for a way to hold like it did. What are your recommendations?

I'm also using a non-digital stick radio (which I need stick & at least 4 channel if not 8) I'm not sure if you need to change the radio out. I see a lot has changed since the early days.

Motor limits. What the lowest motor limit or highest on what voltages. 2s,3s,4s etc. I feel it’s a common issue for heat or burning the esc up. Thanks.

I'm running a savox 1230sg on one rig and an mks hv777a+ on another with 1080 esc. The 1230 is set at 6v, the mks is set at 7.4v. I'm running a spektrum radio and have not experienced any brown outs. I do prefer an external Bec but the 1080 has proven to be pretty robust.
