treatment for children and adolescents with selective mutism is developed by our whole-child approach it means that the discussion that we have with parents and we make a specific
decision of where to go especially the teenager is part of the decision-making.
The older child starts to understand even more about anxiety and what anxiety looks
like feels like and how to overcome it but although anxiety is key is often not enough because as a child is aging we know that teenagers with selective mutism they don't feel that
anxious anymore but their mutism and their lack of communication and proper social interaction in the specific setting have not able then to create friendships.
Creating social communications is important to help them understand how are they
going to make friends how they are they going to be part of and kind of everyday life so children were and people especially teenagers were selective mutism they need strategies themselves they need intervention interventions to move from a verbal to an unknown verbal communication stage but what happens is that it's a team approach it's not just what the parents say to them you can do
Supporting them in making that progression step by step and doing exactly where to go, so strategies and interventions are based on the level where the child is at and where the teenager is confident

I think i have selective mutism, I can't speak to my teachers, most of them put pressure on me to talk and some don't mind and keep the pressure off. Its really hard to talk although i really want to, but at the same time i don't want to just be constantly asked questions.. My parents never done anything about it neither have teachers so im, stuck to figure out what's wrong with me by myself. And taking about this makes me break down knowing that im, not normal (Also kids at my school say "Stop taking" & "Shut up" I know there are jokes, But they hurt beacuse i want to be normal i don't want to be known as "She Dosent Talk Girl")

hello, i am a mother of a teen girl who 'sounds' very like you, is shy/doesn't like talking/won't talk. She instead of 'acting out' any distress will 'act in' getting quieter and more and more distressed and more and more non-communicative . Please contact someone if you can, can you text/email your head of year/any teacher you feel close-ish to? Many creative therapies are useful here, being with animals...

My daughter is 16 and struggles a lot with this we have tried gp’s, paediatricians etc and are getting no help. We don’t even know where to start. She’s been enrolled at college since last September but her tutors really struggle with understanding why she won’t speak often thinking she’s just rude and is choosing not to talk rather then being physically unable to due to her anxiety. If you have any other videos I would love to see them

There just seems to be no help for young adults at all I tried all counselling services and no one would help her because she’s doesn’t talk’ feel free to email me if you’d rather lisawcpz@gmail.com

@@CherokeeSiren hey so I'm 17 & I've had it my whole life & something I'd suggest is possibly medication. I started taking Prozac when I was 8 & it made a big difference & another tip is try not to make a big deal when she does talk because it can further the anxiety. For me I always felt like I didn't want to try to speak cause people sort of made it a big deal but when I was alone with someone who doesn't know me & expects me to speak then I felt like I could. It's different for everyone but it will get better & you picking to watch this video & educate yourself shows that you're a great parent for her💖

i'm 18 and i'm not sure if i have selective mutism or not (bc i don't wanna self diagnose and i don't go to therapy or anything) but i always struggle/find it hard to communicate with other people in certain situations especially when ordering stuff in restaurants, calling for waiters, answering calls, telling the taxi driver where to go, and during presentations in class. especially during this pandemic, i would have to leave the class because i would have anxiety attacks because i was told to speak. i've been this way ever since 3rd grade and my mom only shrugs it off and tells me that idk how to face people and it's so frustrating because she doesn't know what it feels like, i genuinely FEAR talking in certain situations and in other times, no matter how much i want or try to speak, i would only produce tiny sounds. it's so draining that i would feel so sick whenever i would be forced to speak and i would have to take a break. i would have to write down on a piece of paper or type on my phone and make people read what i have to say. i actually thought that i was the only person in the world who's like this because my mom made me believe that i was only "being rude" or like what i've said, she'd tell me that i just don't know how to face people. i found out about SM in this one story i was reading and i was shook and happy because i can relate to that character. i kinda wanna know if it really is SM or just something else. and if it really is SM, i wanna get help in the future

I am seriously suffering from selective mutism , I do not know how to bring differences in my communication . I was not a selectively mute child from childhood , I was quite outgoing but since I stepped into teenage I started refraining myself from speaking since my teachers and parents used to complain a lot about me being too talkative . now it is hard for me to even say a hi to a friend i have met just a year before. my mother thinks that i misbehave in social gatherings by not greeting my relatives but believe me , i try my level best to speak out but i still can't . Please help me out, what should i do in this case ?

My daughter is really struggling with this. And she’s so smart and funny at home but can’t get a word out at school or in public . She’s feeling very lonely and it breaks my heart. Very few teachers or peers understand and they think it’s a choice. They don’t understand that she desperately wants to speak, share and have friendships and confidence. 😩

I think I have this. Ever since I was young I've been known as a quiet person. Some people thought I was deaf/dumb and they get shocked when I speak (whisper) a word or call it a"Christmas miracle"😂. There was this time when one of my classmates who I met again in middleschool introduced me to his friend as "the most quiet girl in the world". Now I'm getting ready for college and still known as "the most quiet girl in the set". Some people think I choose not to talk or I'm just faking it or pretending cause I speak comfortably to my family and best friend. But no, I actually really want to be able to speak like them and interact normally. I always thought there was something wrong with me and that I was the only person like this so I wanted to find out the reason ( that's why I'm becoming a psychiatrist) until I found out about Selective mutism. I tried telling my mom so we can see a psychologist and I can know what to do about this but she just doesn't get it 😔. So I've decided to solve this on my own and find a way to overcome it.

I'm 21 and I think that I have selective mutism, I'm not sure. Things is, I'm involved in debating and public speaking, even doing solo or group presentation is no problem for me although I might feel a little nervous sometimes but I overcome it. However, in some cases I'm not able to speak, it's like sometimes I freeze and what I want to say can't come out as hard as I try. I'm able to have a social life and hang out with friends but certain things that I might want to say, I just can't sometimes. Is this something I can overcome on my own?
@YourFather9919
@YourFather9919 4 года назад
Yes you can overcome from it. Do you really know what selective Mutism is?, it is most probably related to a child not being able to express himself in public or at school or around other people who are not his direct family. I have a girlfriend who is 23, she can't get a decent job because of this problem. She doesn't attend calls because she feels like she has a balloon in her throat which keeps her from speaking out. Last year she tried to kill her self. And I really feel sorry for her. Cause I can't get to her. She is in Germany. Selective mutism can ruin your career and your life. What you have is just anxiety which I feel will go away if you will practice it among the people you likes most and confident with. Practice those situations with your friends and family and discuss those topics with them. Gain more knowledge about those topics because some times we just feel nervous if we do have much idea about the stuff on which we have to express our views. And the most important thing always focus on the message which you wish to deliver not the person who is going to hear it. Because most of the time even if a simple line is said with confidence it can and do makes a huge difference. So always picturise the words and points which you wish to say to the people. Not their faces and expressions in your mind. Take care!
@teion069
@teion069 4 года назад
@@YourFather9919 Maybe you're right. And that's why I get more involved in public speaking and I've been getting better. I do hope that your girlfriend gets through this, maybe I don't understand how it is in that situation but don't give up!

Why so Serious I can totally relate to what your girlfriend has gone through. I grew up with this and never had it treated. It’s been really hard trying to pursue different careers because of my inability to communicate. I’m 28 now, and it’s only been within the past year that I’ve started to make a lot of progress. What was especially challenging for me is that I never knew I had an anxiety/communication problem.

Hi there, I work with a teen who hasn’t spoken since nursery. We put absolutely no pressure on her to speak but are encouraging communication. We are teaching her strategies to use but she seems to only be able to use them with me and is seriously regressing in a lot of areas and just doesn’t want to come to school. She doesn’t seem anxious anymore and is happy in classes but does nothing and doesn’t want to use the strategies for communication with others that were suggested and chosen by her. She doesn’t seem to want to communicate or follow her schedule and actually laughs at the staff when they try to help her and encourage her to attend class and join in- she sits in a department base. What can we do to help her. I’ve read so much literature/books on the subject but there is nothing that is working.

She’s 14, the other two girls in the house have SM, the 2 boys don’t at all. Very anxious and nervous. The mum has called her out for “getting fatter cos she doesn’t do Phys Ed” and it’s normal growth and dev. Genuinely stuck and concerned for her functioning in life. Since I commented, I could have sworn she vocalised by accident to me in response to something. No words but a sound. Never repeated again. Didn’t draw any attention to it incase she did it by accident and would be embarrassed of my mentioning it. I did intensive 1:1 with her all last year to get basic functioning communication set up with her. There’s no motivation to speak she’s quite content in the silent world but struggles so much. I’ve worked with non verbal autistic people and as you say they are more keen to speak. She speaks at home but I’m not sure the extent of it.
