As an immigration lawyer, when clients can't remember when they came to the US in the 90s, I would ask "was it before or after Selena died?" they would instantly figure it out. It's that much of a cultural touchstone.
Selena's sister Suzette (drummer) and father Abraham gave an interview to ET, I think in 2017, where she said this about her reaction seeing JLo made up as her sister: “She gave me chills when I saw her [for the first time],” Suzette told ET. “I was with him [her father] when she walked out. I literally, for a split second, thought it was my sister. I mean, the way she came out and when she came down the stairs, she kind of pushed down her dress the way that my sister would. She just looked amazing.”
@@beautifulbliss5883 she may get out next year. she has asked selena’s family to get out early with parole or something like that. i’m paraphrasing that. she’s already getting a doc explaining her side of the story which i think is completely inappropriate.
Didn't Narcos already state that the moment she's out they're gonna come for her?? Like it's not just the law abiding citizens but actual drug cartels that hate her.
Oh for sure. From what I heard its a slander campaign against Selena and her trying to justify or explain how it was an accident and she didn't mean to or some other bs. @lovelyhorror1
@@Risgolden This is a false rumor. She was NOT offered the role for this movie. There were many unauthorized production companies attempting to make several movies during this time. Its possible Hayek was approached to play Selena, but it was NOT for this movie.
It’s been 28yrs and i still have a pit in my stomach everytime hear the song dreaming of you. Gives me anxiety and extreme sadness anytime i hear it. So I couldn’t imagine how her loved ones feel even hearing that song or seeing, hearing and coming across anything that reminds them of her.
@@albertjimeno5315 No. The family are not film makers. Their role was being there for production as a source of information. They also got to approve the cast and they enforced the decision to use Selena's real music/vocals.
So they got the audio from Selena’s actual concerts and official audios, every performance/singing scene is Selena’s actual voice. And the song “dreaming of you” is so painfully perfect for Chris it HURTS My HEART. MY SOOOUUUUL
The stipulation from the family was that all the singing had to be Selena's voice. J Lo hungout w the family & watched concerts/ home movies to get to know Selena properly.
They gave us a sort of study hall/free period on Fridays, so it was like background noise. We didn’t have to sit intently and watch it. It was also on a loop so it wasn’t necessarily in the same spot each time and I’d rather watch Selena than do homework.
Her husband, Chris, wrote a book titled "To Selena with Love" talking about their love story and the reality of their marriage. All these years later he still loves her and misses her every day.
When she got killed I cried I was in elementary 4th grade. My heart broke for Chris when the movie first came out. We all really wanted to see their love grow and have kids. I will never ever forgive that big back whale. I love you Selena❤
Chris was shopping around to do a series based on the book but Abraham shut it down in favor of the Netflix show. I'm still salty about it. Chris gave us stories about the woman off the stage, and it was so tastefully and beautifully written. I still hope we'll see it adapted for the screen one day.
@@ohsocrazy Honestly Abraham was kinda right to stop his series. Cause In my opinion Chris's book didn't really paint Selena in a great light. She came off as a brat, like a kid in a candy store and went for the things her daddy said no to just because he said no. She felt the need to prove him wrong. Not even because she truly wanted it (her eloping for example). You get a sense that once she got the forbidden man (Chris) she kinda lost interest but stuck it out cause she couldn't let her dad be right that they wouldn't make it as a couple.
Fun fact: Beyonce actually met Selena at a mall in Houston. She talked about it in an interview that she didn't say much to Selena because she wasn't a celebrity but she also talked about how Selena had a huge influence in her career.
@@amylee8969TV series butchered it bad tho lol overall the series still makes me cry like a baby it has its moments but the back story and climax is impeccable i love it each detail to what wasn’t able to be put in the movie is my fave part and the camera side shots lol
Yes but they shot it in the Alamodome in San Antonio, not at the Astrodome in Houston. They really got a lot of extras to fill it up, it was posted in the paper back when they were filming.
@@ragepie292 I know where they shot it but my point was they recreated it like the actual show. And yes all the extras were genuine fans of Selena. They did a great job.
The scene when Selena went to Chris's hotel room telling him they should get married at that moment really happened. Her own father didn't know that's how the elope idea went about he thought it was Chris's idea the whole time but when he saw the scene being filmed he asked the director who told them this and he said "We spoke to Chris." It was one of the few stories Chris was willing to share at the time because losing Selena made him so protective of his memories of her and he didn't want to contribute as much to the story, but he did become friends with Jon Seda, who played him, and they are still friends to this day.
I remember where I was on March 31st, 1995. I was 17, and I was at the laundromat finishing up. Then the music stopped playing, and the DJ announced that Selena was shot and had passed away. I ran home, and my mom was on the couch watching it on TV. We sat together in shock 😢. We were huge fans. All the girls in high school dressed like her, wearing their hair like her, red lipstick, and all. I saw this movie on opening weekend and wore my hair in her signature bun. Selena left a mark on a generation of Latinos.
It’s wild because her death happened like 2 weeks after one of siblings was born. My sibling till this day feels odd she was born days before selena lost her life. I was too young to realize what happened. I was only 5yrs old.
My music teacher in elementary school actually met and was friends with Selena. Showed us a picture of them together. Blew my mind (of course at the time I was pretty young so I didn't actually know who Selena was but now it blows my mind)
The sad thing is that are grade kinda maybe got him kicked out of our school. He kinda had a bit of an anger issue and once threw a chair across the room. I'll remind you once again that this was a class of elementary students so it kinda scared us. Unfortunately, he got replaced by a teacher who was a bit sexist, always wanting the girls to sing first and up in front. Luckily, I did get to meet my old music teacher a few years later.
Everyone in that Texas Astrodome were actual Selena fans there was a big announcement when the movie was being made and they filled up the entire Astrodome and blocked off few blocks outside for people who couldn't get in it was a very big spectacle and that first reaction when the curtains open is the audiences first reaction to Jennifer Lopez as Selena... also here's another fun fact Jennifer Lopez lip sync every song on here
I lip synced a song as a member of a choir in a movie so I understand how that feels. We had Cole Hauser and Barry Pepper and Mira Sorvino watching us.
Selena Quintanilla-Pérez was an iconic figure that was taken away from us WAY TOO SOON. So many people were left crying with the highest level of heartbreak I believe she was on pace to becoming a bigger music icon than Michael Jackson before she passed away.
Hold it there bro. She was on the path of greatness but to call someone at 23 to surpass MJ. Also she was spanish singer you have to aim Juan Gabriel levels before aiming MJ.
@@alarydavidnin fair enough, but her popularity was only getting bigger as time went on. Who knows where she will be if she is still alive but sadly, we will never know.
@@MetalPharoah im not saying she could or could not reach or surpass another singers, but to call at the age of 23 that someone would surpass Michael Jackson is way over proportions. Selena was on the paths of greatness but our minds needs to keep it real.
@alarydavidnin I disagree, let them dream, it could indeed have been a possibility. Especially on a global level, I grew up in the Caribbean and we had a CD of Selena that we listened to, both with English and Spanish songs that we listened and we didn't speak Spanish but loved her music nonetheless. The possibility of reaching those hights was there.
I CAN'T imagine losing my husband from one day to another. So unexpectedly like that. My husband passed away in 2016 due to a serious illness, but at least I had a year to absorb it.
i’m armenian not mexican but the whole “too americanized for your own but too ethnic for white ppl” trope is very real for a lot of immigrants or first gens in america. growing up my parents wanted me to speak english w them at home so that they could learn too but i lost some of my fluency in armenian, esp since i spoke a diff dialect too, and people always say i speak it funny, and then having slight hiccups in english, people made fun of that. i never fit in with my own people in school or even where i live. funny enough more people assume i’m hispanic/latina than middle eastern! but there’s no way to actually equally be “good enough” for either side so the moral of the story is to just be yourself 🤷🏻♀️
As someone who is of Mexican descent from Texas I know the feeling. My first language when growing up was Spanish. My parents said I was completely fluent, and they forced English in the house for several years to make sure I knew English fluently. By the time I was in second grade I forgot how to speak Spanish, I didn't even know that I ever spoke Spanish. But I can hear it and know exactly what is said but I am unable to speak it fluently. All my non Latino friends think I am fluent in Spanish because I speak English with an accent, and I did get made fun of for it. But usually it was just friendly jokes between friends. Then my extended family and older Mexicans come up to me speaking spanish thinking I know how to speak it but I barely know how to tell them I dont speak it. But that I can understand it and help them out in various stores. (usually they come up to me asking for english help in grocery stores or directions). But they always state how its a shame I can't speak my native language. So its frustrating when you arent enough for either side. But I am also given the expectation to bridge the gap for the other sides. Coworkers be like, Theres a spanish only customer, can you speak to them. I be like. Ill do my best but Im not the Spanish speaker for the company.
I did not know of Selena or her music before I saw this movie, but once I saw it, I understood all too well what her fans were feeling when they lost her. When JLo was first cast there was some criticism because she wasn't a Mexican actress (her parents are Puerto Rican) but once they filmed the opening scene with all the fans and they saw Jennifer in costume embodying Selena, they were sold. JLo did a great job!
Same! I'm from Molina, where she and her family lived. My grandma's house was down the street from hers. We always walked by her house on the way home from school and would be like, "You think she's in there?" When she died, that was the first time my parents had to explain death to me.
That starred Lou Diamond Phiilips as Richie Valens. He would later be in another excellent though more uplifting movie; also based upon a true story. It's called Stand & Deliver(1988) with Edward James Olmos as a mathematics engineer who becomes a teacher in a mostly Latino Los Angeles district. I promise it's worth the watch.
the little selena actress look so much like actual selena (way more than she looks like jlo imo) and this is the only role she ever played which is a shame to me because she was SO good. i do miss when movies took the time and care to develop and cast to chemistry because god we really don't get dynamics like this too often anymore. jlo and the cast spent A LOT of time with selena's real life family to develop these bonds and you can tell. oh the impact this movie had on little mexican-american me lmao definitely a staple in my childhood. ANYTHING FOR SELENAS!! she was just on the cusp on breaking through to the pop market when she was murdered. i will never get over how big her loss was to the music industry. also i was today years old when i learned this movie came out only two years after she died???????
Jlo went to her family’s home and stay with them for I think a month to learn about her … and the dad (real dad) cried his eyes out when he saw this and said she captured her charisma and spirit❤❤
Stop it RNNN, I grew up watching this movie! I went a few years ago with my mom and dad to her museum in Corpus Christi, it's all run by her family members, I got to see Suzette and her father, he took us and the other few people in there on a behind the scenes tour of the studio that was used in the movie, and I got to see all her incredible performance costumes, it was amazing and I hope to go back ❤❤❤
One thing to think about while watching this is it was made so soon after she was killed and the family (Abraham especially) were the drivers behind it. It had a big hand in controlling the legacy/memory and I think its notable that Abraham was able to be self critical enough to show how he really was in this movie.
The saddest part was that after selena got shot, she CRAWLED with ALL she had left and got so far to the front lobby & all she could say was “i have been shot” & “yolanda” and then she died…they found her wedding ring in her hand. 😭
It’s kinda funny yall mentioned Astroworld, because like in 1994, I saw Selena perform at AstroWorld, the Six Flags theme park that Travis Scott’s album and concert is based on. Deeper into the rabbit hole. Selena’s former keyboardist was a man named Mike Dean. Mike Dean is Travis Scott’s producer.
The way Jennifer Lopez embodied that role was electrifying. She deserved an Oscar this role. I remember the director Nava said in an interview he asked the studio to campaign for her and they told him the Academy would never vote for a Latina.
That type of movie filming is just so much fun that it really doesn't matter whether you get paid or not as an extra. Similar setup happened for Stallone's fight in Rocky 6.
I’m half Mexican and I grew up in Albuquerque, Houston, and Arcadia California. I was 10 when she died and I cried man. She was one of my first crushes and I loved her music. 😞 My uncle and I went to that concert at the Astro Dome 4:09 They actually held a candlelight vigil in California later on we went to. Yolanda Saldivar, the woman who killed Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla in 1995, is the subject of a new documentary debuting on the Oxygen True Crime network on Feb. 17.
I was there too, in 95. I wasn’t the biggest Selena fan at the time. I mean I was like 10 and starting to find my own lane but I went with my mom, sis, & grandma. On at the time you really had no clue what would happen the next month. I remember the day she died, because my mom picked me and my sis from school and told us. I didn’t really know what to think. This movie came out like a year and a half later.
@@BuckyBarnesNCit’s gonna be 30 years March 2025. I also think Yolanda will be up for parole. All of us that grew up when Selena was still alive, we’re all old heads now
Abe jr... the brother, was one of my customers in Maui. I havent heard from him since covid hit. I spent 2 days with him before I put together who he was. I was a huge fan of selena before this movie came out so I recognized him day 2 and asked him on day 3 if he was the Abe i thought he was and he was really surprised I knew who he was because he never gets recognized since this movie came out. But I was a super fan back in the day before she was killed. He was such a sweet man. Shorter than I thought he would be though.
From what I heard Jennifer Lopez studied every breath. Every hand flick to be as authentic as possible and Selena's dad Is felt like he almost had his daughter back.
fun fact: all of the music in this movie except for three words were sung by Selena. J Lo only sang "Como la flor...", just those three words at the start of the Monterrey performance where she is trying to calm the crowd. Selena was a true performer, the likes of which the world hasn't seen since. Realize, the final Astrodome concert happened before auto tune and she sang, danced and interacted with the stadium's largest crowd ever for nearly a solid hour. No water breaks, no nothing, and barely broke a sweat.
I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!!! Jennifer Lopez isn't the best actress but she killed it in this. She embodied Selena. RIP SELENA ❤ ******btw that's not jlo singing. She wishes she could sing as well as Selena. ****Greg i think you're too hard on the dad and maybe misunderstand his actions. But hey🤷♀️ ***Jennifer Lopez is Puerto Rican ****most Americans didn't know much about Selena until that "i could fall in love " song.
The Cell is hands down my favorite Jenny B. movie. The visuals were stunning and I (unlike some) enjoyed the non-conventional storytelling. It was a literal trip. And thank god Jen didn’t return for the follow up…career ending spectacular😮💨
Fun fact this film actually marked Jennifer Lopez's singing career as she was inspired to become a singer after portraying Selena. This film broke my heart in half😢😢.
I was obsessed with this movie and Selena's music growing up, and to this day this movie's ending makes me cry. She's so beloved and cherished by us fans! 🌹
maybe im the last person to notice this detail but when shes having the "dreaming of you" dream sequence and she gets startled by the rose on the stage. i just realized that the rose is WHITE. the color of roses that we use for funerals/to represent death. and just like the white rose interrupts her singing by coming out of nowhere, the ambulance scene interrupts her sequence by coming out of nowhere. i dont think i ever made the connection of why the rose is white and why it startles her so much. i guess i sort of always took it as the rose being thrown out of love like in the stereotypical roses on stage scenes. but no its not a rose of love, it's an omen of death.
I always revisit her story every now & again & no mayter how many times I always get a lump in my throat just seeing how far she had come so early in her life & then thinking where & how big she would be in present day if she got the chance
Selena is one of the few to unite my family across generations. From my grandma to my mom then to me. Her impact still lives on. Sad as her story is. The important part is to keep her story alive.
As a Mexican American, this movie will always have a special place in my heart. It feels like the only movie that has ever caught what that "living in two realities" feels like. Selena will be our Queen forever!!
I can't get through this movie without crying. I was just about four years old when she died and I can still vaguely remember when the news broke out. Apparently, I was just old enough to have a childish grasp of the situation and, according to my parents, commented on what a 'bad woman' Yolanda was for having killed Selena. She was beloved by the entire Latino community, and as I've gotten older and have more of an appreciation for her music and legacy, watching this movie gets harder. She was so young.
i watched this movie as a young child and i was devastated. i have vivid memories of crying for a week after. i also cried whenever she came on the radio or when they played her at the flea markets my family used to go to. this movie and ‘dreamin of you’ still makes me tear up til this day. she is texas’ princess and we are damn proud and protective of her ❤
"We've seen some moon phases as her life evolves" No idea if it's been mentioned before, but in case it hasn't: Selena is an accepted spanish variant of Selene, greek personification of the moon. So, yeah, any person named "Selena" can be identified, simbolized or linked to the image of the moon. And yeah, she died before her 24th birthday; around half a month away (she was killed on March 31, 1995; she would have celebrated her birthday on April 16). "Yolanda Saldívar" Through the years, Yolanda Saldivar has presented different versions/reasons behind the murder. In any case, she was senteced to life imprisonment with the possibility of parole after 30 years of imprisionment. This means she will be elegible around one year from now: march of 2025.
What is crazy is I do not speak Spanish and I know all her songs word for word LOL. Selena, she truly was iconic in Jennifer Lopez was beautiful as Selena.
I have a Selena playlist I made, on Spotify, and every time I listen to it, I always avoid the last song I have there and that would be “Dreaming of You” because when I hear that song it instantly makes me cry because Selena’s gone and that song was basically a Farewell.
Fact: The white rose was thrown at Selena onstage & she couldn't catch it. It was a dream she had over & over. She sees this as death is coming. BUT THAT WAS JUST FOR THE MOVIE. Her brother A.B. confirmed Selena never had this dream.
I still remember the night she was shot. I was a kid. My house came to a halt. My parents rushed us to the living room to watch the standoff with Yolanda. I didn’t even know who Selena was, but as I grew up, I came to understand who she was, what she meant for our culture, and how big of a tragedy and loss it was. Now I have a visceral reaction whenever I see Yolanda. Even when portrayed by an actor. RIP, Selena ❤️
as a mexican selena fan i am so happy you guys are watching this :) it never fails to make me cry! also if ur looking for more latino/hispanic movies to watch i highly recommend la bamba its one of my favorite movies ever
The voice for child Selena is Jennifer Pena who Selena's dad managed after Selena died. She started doing Tejano music then switched to Spanish pop when she got older.
This movie really put Selena in the hearts of people who weren't able to grow up with her or experience her when she was alive. It's one of the most soul filled movies I ever watched.
RIP La Reina de la Cumbia 🌹💃🏻🇲🇽 This has become a cult classic for the Latino community and I will NEVER get tired of it! Even though I’m not a big fan of JLo she really embodied the spirit and personality of Selena that sometimes you think it’s really Selena on screen! Scary but good acting! My favorite song’s are Techno Cumbia, no me queda mas, and como la flor!
I am going to date myself by saying this; I remember when Jennifer Lopez was a dancer on In Living Color. There was so much talent on that show created by Keanan Ivory Wayans. Not just his family, but Tommy Davidson, David Allen Grier, Jamie Foxx, and of course Jim Carrey.
I watched this movie in high school for Spanish class and was immediately OBSESSED!!! I loved it so much. I would watch it constantly. I hadn't previously heard of Selena or Jennifer Lopez until watching the movie, so I didn't know the ending. I was devastated. It's such a good movie and she had bops for days!
Same here. Although it took more than 1 day to watch the movie and I ended up not being at school the day they finished it so I had to watch the end on my own time. I was so mad I missed it.
I grew up thinking she was mostly a Texas celebrity and then after I became an adult it seemed like she was everywhere. Now it feels weird that someone doesn’t know much about her.
The restaurant scene was filmed a block over from where I was working at. I remember the while area was blocked off with trucks and tents, that was a real popular restaurant here in San Antonio called Karem's. Unfortunately it longer exists.
Selena was HUGE in Texas! I knew who she was even as a little kid. Her murder was massive and I mean MASSIVE news when it happened. When people found out that Jennifer Lopez, a Puerto Rican star, would be playing Selena, who was Mexican American, they were not happy. But Jennifer even stayed with Selena’s family to prepare for the role. She studied her movements, and the way she talked, etc. and when the movie came out, that was a huge deal as well, and she did a great job. She nailed it.
Abraham's speech about being Mexican American is basically described what it means to be "ni de aqui, ni de alla" (Not from here, not from there.) so you have to work twice as hard to "fit in" with both worlds but even to this day, you still get criticized. I've been told online that I am not Mexican. I am American even tho I claim to be both since I am first generation and bilingual.
This movie came out when I was six years old and, I remember when it ended, I went to hide in my room so I could cry. Jennifer Lopez is Puerto Rican and Mexican Americans, at least the ones I know, were very upset that she got the role but she absolutely nailed it! Oh! Also, don’t know why, but I always quote that line from the angry club-goer, “We wanna dance!” It’s so dramatic and I love it!
I never liked Abraham, he was very controlling of Selena and he was never accepting of her husband. After she passed away, he has tried to prevent him from doing anything for her memory. He was barely able to release his book about their love story because he was trying to stop him. They even went to court multiple times. btw I recommend for you guys to react to Society of the Snow pls its really good
Fun fact. After watching the reaction I decided to look into how soon after her death they started working on the movie. It was only 6 months after her death. And it was because Abraham, her father, was fully aware of all the tabloids and knew a studio was going to make a film eventually with or without the families permission. He and the family decided it would be best if they stayed ahead of it so they can maintain control over Salena's public image. A smart move in my opinion. Initially the writer of the film didn't want to do it because he felt it was exploitation. But, after taking a walk on Venice beach, he encountered a couple of Selena's fans. He asked them why she was important to them. And their response was, "She looks like us." This changed his mind. He realized how important her story is for young Latina women. He said that at this time, there were ver few Latina role models or princesses on screen. He wanted to give them a princess they can look up to. I believe he did.
shes pretty much living tha life Selena was supposed to have RIP 💯 Fun Fact: Selena made a cameo in tha film Don Juan Demarco starring Johnny Depp & Marlon Brando
Love that you guys do all sorts of content and not just one sort of genre. I would love to do a video with you guys. Reel Rejects and The Moderator Collab! 😂 Also because you all do a bunch of different stuff. There’s a great movie called ‘8 Seconds’. It’s a true story of a up and coming bull rider. He grew up on the farm working hard, went through fame and fortune, love, hardships, gaining more fame, winning his dream ride, and then bad things happen which I won’t spoil. True story and you should check it out. Luke Perry plays the bull rider.
One of my core memories, as a Mexican-American in my early 30s is watching this movie nearly every day. I’ve never seen anyone not know Yolanda so I was a little caught off guard with you both not knowing what she did. Loved this video.
