True that getting attacked by a random meth head is much less likely than getting attacked by a friend, acquaintance, or family member. But to be fair, some people are friends, acquaintances, or relatives of drug users.

Also in some areas of the country people live in close proximity to meth heads. I went to college in Springfield, MO which has a huge meth problem and college students would live in apartments next to meth users/houses and it was a serious problem.

This week, I really had to use these self defense skills you've talked about. I work as a manager for the returns desk in a retail store. A man walked out of the bathroom, threw a can on the floor, punched out a sign, and knocked over a mannequin. Customers we pulling their children away as he ran up the escalator to the jewelry department. Without any in-store security on duty, it was me and another manager watching the guy. Our protocol is to try to service the customer to make them aware of our presence and to pressure them into leaving. Without a martial arts studio, I haven't practiced any sparring, but I learn boxing through VR and shadow boxing. I had a pen, a flashlight, and a pocket knife. He saw me approaching as he was looking out for witnesses. "What the F*** you lookin at? Who the F*** are you? Yea, you ain't sh**! Get out of here f*****." Though my striking is basic, I use deescalation every day in returns. Keeping enough distance to draw if necessary, I was able to talk him down. He was menacing towards me, but with other coworkers behind me I was the only thing between them. He feinted a blow. Maybe it was instinct, maybe a calculated risk, maybe fearful paralysis, but I felt like if I pulled something from my pocket I would destroy my chances at deescalating. He didn't come closer, and he backed off. He did end up stealing a pair of sunglasses, but he didn't hurt anyone. I know that a lot of people would have handled that differently, and I'm open to criticisms-this is my first self defense situation. I know some people won't believe this actually happened. But on the off chance that you do read this, I want you know that your lessons may have kept this and many other situations from being much worse.
@WisdomThumbs
@WisdomThumbs 2 года назад
So long as you had the space to defend against his feint if he’d committed, and not just be surprised by it, it sounds like you did good. If his feint got close enough that you think he would’ve hit you had he committed, make that the lesson and use more space while your palms are up. At the end of the day you weren’t hurt.

You can build a resistance to pepper spray given that the active ingredient in most OC sprays are capsaicin. That being said you're a glutton for punishment to train your resistances to it lol I did it with my cop buddy since part of his training is going through a live scenario all while being sprayed in the eyes. My conclusion, I really don't wanna be sprayed but with training I guess you can fight through it. It still sucks though

Even if you were to stab me in the trachea, I wouldn't go down right away. From my experiences taking stims for ADHD, I perceive something different regarding pain in small details. For example, usually I can't take my gf bursting my pimples for long without complaining of the annoyance, but if I'm on a stim, I hardly feel it. Never fought anyone while on it, but it helps strengthening your grip on things and be up and ready for anything easier. So it probably doesn't make you stronger than your natural, but it possibly makes you access all your natural strength. I know it has something to do noradrenergic effects of those stims

I work armed security in Portland, and I can attest that the meth head strength/ability to not feel pain is extremely real. They also unfortunately are well aware that the cops won’t show up, and if they do they won’t be prosecuted by the DA and any action against them will be viewed as egregious. This contributes to their inability to be dealt with because they know they have little to fear on the accountability side.

Pain compliance is what most self defense weapons use, peppers spray all pain, yes you have slight breathing issues and eye irritation but the irritation is a form of pain and the breathing is uncomfortable but will not stop someone. Tasers relies on pain to prevent further attack after the initial short burst of energy, even pistols require pain and fear of death to stop the attacker, often a pistol shot will not stop people instantly so the pain and fear of death is what makes people stop the attack. I've only been the intended victim of an attack one time and it was with three thugs I've never seen before when I was parked near a drive through ATM on a weekend when the bank was closed. to make a long story not as long they were acting suspicious then blocked my car in with theirs, when it was clear they were going to attack I drew my pistol and had in in a low ready position, that caused them to rethink their plan and slowly drive away. The odds of a stranger attacking you may be low but they are still there.

I've spent years, both as a student and an instructor of Krav Maga, and the fact that there is ZERO in either the IKMF or KMG curriculums for defending against an abusive spouse, while there are detailed procedures for how to take down a person armed with an assault rifle in an airplane hijacking situation is more than enough to explain why I got fed up and quit...

Yeah all those people who say anything less than a .45 caliber bullet is weak are annoying. The .45 was adopted in WW2 because Japanese troops would tie bamboo around their torso, arms and legs really tight so they wouldn't feel pain. @@rwdchannel2901 You seem to have mistaken the Japanese with the Moro Muslims of the Philippine Islands. The Moros were Islamic jihadi zealots whom attacked American troops in the Philippine islands. American troops carried 38 caliber pistols and 30 cal rifles at the time. The Filipino Moro Jihadi would tourniquet their limbs before charging with swords and bolos. A common method used in blade cultures before battle to slow blood loss and stem blood pressure drop should a limb be severed in battle, allowing the swordsman more time to wound or kill more OpFor before going down. In thick, dense, jungle it was easy for Moro swordsman to ambush American troops at close quarter. The American 38 caliber round proved less effective at 'stopping' a charging, adrenalized, Moro Jihadi before he could cut down Americans before succumbing to his wounds. So the 45 caliber pistol round was created and troops were armed with the new round. It packed enough wallop to 'stop' a sword charging Moro Jihadi geeked up on adrenalin with his limbs tourniqueted. The 45 then saw service in European theatre against Nazi before it saw service in pacific theatre against Imperial Niponese/Japanese. Later the 38special was created and it was adopted by police because it was more powerful than the old 38 cal. Today with modern gun powder and better ammo we have smaller rounds producing bigger wound shock channels than the slower moving, venerated, 45cal. pistol round. The 45 acp however was an upgrade from the original 45 cal pistol round. But yea, you meant Filipino Moros.

I got OCed sprayed in the military, and then had to complete a baton fighting course while under the effects. I think OC spray either works REALLY well, or not at all. I've witnessed some people (most of them were Fillipino, not sure if certain races just have resistance or something) have near-immunity. Some people can just power through it. Other people, its like somebody hit them in the head with a brick. Because of all this, I think where OC spray really excels over other options is when you are dealing with multiple people, but against a single attacker, I don't like the idea of a weapon that just straight up won't work against some people no matter what.

S challenge I have is that I am a wheelchair user. I use an electric wheelchair. Although I am ambulatory; I am not in a position to jump out of my chair and wrestle. But I should learn some techniques that can be used sitting down. Currently my weapon is a stinger whip. I keep it on top of my left side armrest secured with two zip ties. The business end slides under the zip ties easily because the armrest has a divot. That side is where the joystick is. So my arm does it good job of concealing the whip. I can easily reach over with my right hand to grab the handle of the whip and whip it out. My other weapons are a Yoogo keychain and flashlight.

All of of the advice given is extremely good advice. A gun or any weapons whatsoever deadly or no is a liability and another element you just added to the confrontation and mad it more dang our and harmful for yourself and you have to feel confident to use it and using a gun can be extremely hard to do when faced with actual killing someone.

@kevinmcmillin870
@kevinmcmillin870 2 года назад
It does not take continuous training for a gun to be “worth the liability”. Keep it loaded. Keep it locked and hidden but still easily accessible when needed. You should know how to operate it, know how to clear jams, and be familiar with how it feels to fire it. A home defense firearm is not a liability unless the homes residents are mentally unstable, drug addicts, domestic abusers, or all of the above. Get a gun and keep your home and family safe.

So, I gotta say, living in Portland myself: this is not a myth. I myself have been in close contact with multiple dangerous situations especially downtown where we have a lot of homeless people, and on the train. In fact i had two people get into a fight, rolling on the floor, right in front of me on a train. And then another time I was riding a train and some crazy homeless guy was definitely whacked out on something and about to get into a fight with two other guys on the train, yelling at them, and cussing them out and such. Another time my roomate and I were getting off work downtown late at night and walking to the train stop, and we got confronted by a homeless guy and he was pretty aggressive. In cities with a big homeless problem the stranger attack has definitely become more than a myth these days.
@hard2hurt

@sarakajira
@sarakajira 2 года назад
@@hard2hurt Well what I was trying to say is that in Portland, and other cities with big homeless problems, a "whacked out methhead who you don't know", actually is a more likely scenario here. Also some people who are LGBT (such as trans women, etc.), are automatically a target for others who don't like their very existence, and then when you add crazy and intoxicated to that mix, it can be a dangerous mix. We had some white supremacist guy attack a muslim woman on a train a couple years back and IIRC the two guys who came to her aid and defended her got stabbed to death. Last winter downtown there was some guy who just got out of jail and walked into some juice bar or something and stole a sandwich and just randomly punched the female shop owner. There was another time when I personally was riding the bus to work and some crazy guy was staring at me the entire ride and talking loudly at me. I didn't respond but it was super creepy and then he followed me off the bus at the transit center and continued to stare and glare at me. I got so creeped out I went to find a female bus driver and had her call security who delt with the guy, but I have to say, especially if you take transit or live or work in a city with a big homeless problem like a lot of the West Coast, these kinds of crimes have become a bigger issue. We also have the Proud Boys across the river in Vancouver, and part of their initiation rites is they come into Portland and beat up strangers. They consider it a badge of honor. It's definitely still low, like in a city of millions the chances of something happening are pretty small. But I've had enough incidents, or been around enough incidents on public transit and in the downtown area that I definitely would not travel alone on transit unarmed. And these were all incidents where I wasn't seeking out trouble or ignoring my gut, it was like I just happened to be on the same train or bus as a crazy person and something went down. I definitely understand this women's concern who's from Portland who sent you that question.

@sarakajira 2 года назад
@Nicholas Time That's rather rude and patronizing. I've had multiple violent or very sketchy encounters happen on public transit or while commuting, or in the downtown area of my city. Any one of those could have gone worse. Violent crime rates are actually spiking in Portland. I don't live in fear of that, I take precautions and use common sense. I carry pepper spray and a flashlight. I love my city. I wouldn't live anywhere else. It's a beautiful place to live. But we do have a well-documented increasing crime problem. (Including violent crime, homicides have gone wayyy up the last few years.) Please don't act like national averaged out statistics negates localized hotspots where crime is actually on the rise. It's bad math, and it's just not true. Just this morning there was a woman found severely assaulted and left for dead in the parking lot of a car wash a few blocks from my home. Again, please don't act like national averages negate local hotspots, and that residents in those areas shouldn't take those risks seriously and take precautions. It's not about living in fear, it's about risk management, and taking reasonable precautions.

Pain compliance techniques are useful for working in regulated industries such as crowd control where you're working in teams. When used precisely and with escalation in mind it is extremely effective... To a point. However self defence entails being forced into a situation where escalation is beyond your control, escape is hindered and the only perceived outcome is extreme violence. Regarding self defence I believe Bruce Lee said it best, "to train a thousand hours doing one technique is better than training 1 hour on each of a thousand techniques." Now in my forties I have explored various techniques and fighting styles but unfortunately no longer have much time to devote to training, nor can i afford injury. So I've come to a point where I have minimised my training to the application of several combinations that are best suited to me, which I practice with situational variations such as open area, tight enclosed area, loose footing, slopes, number of attackers etc, and also mindfully training speed or training power. Training with others has become a rarity for me now unfortunately. With this in mind, typically I will first work toward disabling an opponent's knee, then failing that, to disrupt their balance before either trying for a knee again or striking to the head or neck and lastly to resort to grab for something to quickly break or choke if presented to me. I will want to avoid the ground because first chance I get I'm outta there. Typically the body language of an attacker will tell me a lot about their strengths, such as stance and posture, which will give me an idea of how to impose my own strengths to my greatest advantage. Everything is setting up for the next and it's important to have trained so you are operating on 'reaction time', and not on 'thinking about it time'. If I can effectively cause damage with any of these three techniques then I will have created enough of a chance to make good my escape.

the only way to deal with attackers, who are no longer 'pain compliant', is immobilization/incapacitation (injury) or death. if theres no weapon at hand, one will have to close with and 'neutralize' the threat. could get very ugly and/or unpleasant. maybe even 'messy'. could become quite the legal entanglement, also. avoidance is HIGHLY Recommended.

Friend of mine had a pretty rough childhood, what you could call a bit of a rough diamond, he is an honest guy, that can take care of himself,, what is totally beyond his comprehension though, is the fact an awful lot of people have reached middle age or beyond, and never hit/punched anyone in their lives. He cannot understand the shock or the physical/thought process that affects people, hitting someone is an alien concept for so many people, not everyone can flip the switch and react, with violence, with the 'qualifier' that its acceptable and okay as the attacker has initiated and deserves whatever they have coming.

Never focus on what’s the most painful moves to an addict. Most of them won’t show pain anyways and even when hurt they don’t usually respond to it. Think of the situation as if you’re a buffet chef, and the addict is a customer. You’re there to feed him these hands until he’s full. This is why people need to learn how to box/kickbox, it’s best to keep these people at a distance and grapple only when you’re not outboxing them. keep fighting till they are “full” with eating your fist.

I'd like to comment that your advice is totally on point. I'm lucky enough to live in a country where the likelihood of needing the advice is almost negligible, but that said, I may travel to somewhere that it is relevant. Unfortunately there is no access to 'Pepper Spray, Tazers, or legal firearms where I live and obviously you couldn't take these with you on your travels. So that leaves only the ability to fight off an attacker hand to hand. Which is worrying, so my question is, is there one single method or technique that could disable an attacker long enough for you to escape? Keep up the good work, you make more sense than any other and I like the format.
