You are training a martial arts that revolves around being close to your opponent. At a distance, your opponent's threats will not reach you. In proximity, you will control your opponent OR your opponent's attacks will not have the momentum to damage you significantly. Ideally, do not be in a situation that calls for self defense. Keep your hands up and be ready, but don't be the person who escalates the heat of the moment.

My catch wrestling instructor, r.i.p., would often say, "Sometimes you need to go to the heart of danger to find safety." Similar concept to this example being taught here.

Dude, I fucking love that! I never heard it said that way before, but that’s spot on!

@@marklanda6824 he had a colorful vocabulary to say the least. One other saying he would say was, "Sometimes you get the bear, sometimes the bear gets you! There are no sure things in life."

That’s my same principal for stick fighting. All the way in or all the way out. Don’t linger in the mid range. You’ll get your wig split.

Be sure to occasionally take a quick look behind you as well, oftentimes when someone is trying to get your attention in front, their buddy is setting up the attack from behind. Jiu-jitsu you gotta have eyes in the back of your head!

This is very nice in self defence but limited to ONE 2 ONE. Why clinch in a street fight and putting yourself at risk even with one opponent? H emay have a unseen buddy. I am believeing what they say about BJJ. A martial art that cannot defend itself against 2 or more attackers is quite weak. However useful to know.
@nicocontreras5366

Yeah right, in theory many styles masters dream about defending themselves from more than one attacker.

Not every situation calls for striking either. It's useful for a drunk at a party, a combative person during an emotional situation, an irate relative. I saw a big karate blackbelt get taken down by 2 bjj blue belts at a seminar. He was ready to strike but couldn't stop one in front and one behind him. They didn't get hit, but he got subdued. We all know by now that striking AND grappling are what we should be training.

@@mutant0177 That disgusting comment was a little out of place. Stepping in dog doo while barefoot is disgusting. Your assumption that no one teaches bjj vs. multiple opponents is not true. It's just that tournament bjj gyms aren't doing much self defense at all. Lots of people are in it for the sport or just to stay active.

"You'll need to see a dentist or you'll go out." Breaking someone's teeth is great bodily harm and choking someone out is strangulation. You better be able to clearly articulate why you felt this fit the "reasonable person" clause for the usage of lethal force and how this person crossed the line from "let's fight" to legitimate threat of great bodily harm or death... especially when you're the one making the criminal threats of great bodily harm. Bad self-defense advise that can turn successful self-defense into prison time.

If you are in a street fight, you're already on prison time. Either avoid the fight in it's entirely running, screaming for help etc or end it quickly in the best of your abilities.

" and how this person crossed the line from "let's fight" to legitimate threat of great bodily harm or death" That's nonsense. "let's fight" is crossing that line.

that's the weakest pansy post ever. it's self-defense, there's nothing wrong with saying you will harm the guy if he attacks you, it's a good thing, it puts the guy on notice/warning. "lethal force"? that literally means force that kills or comes close to killing someone, breaking a tooth is nothing close to that and neither is getting punched or choking someone out and it's not "great bodily harm either"....in fact you can say WHATEVER YOU WANT to avoid the fight. I guess you think anyone playing contact sports like football, hockey, rugby, martial arts etc. are experiencing lethal force /great bodily harm 1000s of times? you get elbowed in a basketball game? FOUL-LETHAL FORCE / GREAT BODILY HARM!!!
@Steven-rp8zo

Scott's right. Try everything you can to avoid the street fight. The loser goes to the hospital or goes to morgue. The winner goes to jail. You better be able to very clearly show (preferably in video) that you tried to step back and tried to de-escalate the situation. If you can convince a jury of 12 total strangers too dumb to get out of jury duty that you had no choice and were afraid for your life, then the use of great bodily harm *may not* land you in prison, but you'll still have to spend at least tens of thousands to defend yourself in court and possible civil charges. It's not fair but it's reality.
