Do you have a side gig (part-time job)? If yes, most likely, you have to pay Self-employment tax (SE tax) and also income tax since you are self-employed. Even if you work a full-time job, you can still be self-employed with your side job. I'll cover how to calculate your self-employment tax in this short video.
Your self-employment tax is 15.3%. That rate comes from adding 12.4% for Social Security and 2.9% for Medicare. Self-employment tax applies to net income or net profit. The fast way to calculate your self-employment tax is to take your net profit and multiple the profit by 14.13%.
Example: Gross income for being self-employed is $26,000. Your deductions are $6,000. That leaves you with a net profit or net income of $20,000. Take 20,000 and multiply by 92.35%. Now take the $18,470 and multiple by 15.3%, and that is your self-employment tax. $18,470 x 15.3% = $2,825.91. I rounded to $2,826.00 in the video.
Examples of self-employed side hustle jobs:

Rideshare driver - Uber or Lyft
Delivery driver
Wedding Photographer on the weekend
Dog walker
Sell items online
Graphic designer
Online writer
Virtual assistant

Most likely, you need to pay your taxes quarterly to the IRS. I'll discuss paying your taxes online in another video.
Terms:
Net Profit or net income - Gross income minus your deductions. This is done on Schedule C.
1099-NEC Form - Non-employment compensation form. You usually get it annually in January and have to claim this as Gross Income on Schedule C.
According to the IRS, who is self-employed?
Generally, you are self-employed if any of the following apply to you.
- You carry on a trade or business as a sole proprietor or an independent contractor.
- You are a member of a partnership that carries on a trade or business.
- You are otherwise in business for yourself (including a part-time

Thanks so much. I just started selling on Ebay in July. I had no idea how to calculate SE tax. I think I'm late paying as of now but at least I finally found out how to do it. Definitely subscribing!

Hi Chris thank you! This is great. My story is I worked for a builder, and had just the 1099 NEC. With it being a rough year, I was living off all that income now it is pay back time. If understood you correctly we pay all that soc. and medicare because we are the employee and employer period. Meaning I never got any of that taken out. I just got a straight up commission check. Aslo, i couldn't help to notice you have a online shop. How long have you been doing that. I sooo want to do Amazon FBA or whatever that e-commerce stuff is, but honestly there are so many video's and guru people who say come to me and I can show you how to make money. I have been douped before so can you tell me how long you been doing this online store and what the upfront cost would be. I have heard you can go to free websites design shirts, send those to a online store and sell them ( with your own designs) this would right up my alley as I am pretty creative. Any help in this category would be fantastic! Thanks Lisa

Hi! thank you for your video. I have a question concerning Profit and Loss Statement. For example I need to give the government's Health Insurance an update on my income for 2022, this is the first year I am totally as self employed. My question is: the total amount of my income report should be before or after taxes? That is my TOTAL INCOME minus TOTAL EXPENSES/DEDUCTIONS or TOTAL INCOME minus TOTAL EXPENSES/DEDUCTIONS minus TAXES? Should I apply any On Net Profit percentage 92.35%? Thank you

Jordan, I don't even do my own taxes. My CPA, for my taxes, didn't do anything with Part 3. All blank, but that is me.

Can you answer this for me? If someone had self-employment income of $55,000, and the self-employment tax would be $7,771, what would the estimated tax payments be?
@ChrisMenardTraining

For self employment, you pay taxes on 1) income and 2) se taxes. You should pay your payments quarterly but I pay my taxes monthly. As as example. If you are self employed and your self employment tax liability (what you own the IRS) is $6,000, you should pay $1,500 every quarter.
