This is a pneumatic oscillator that I made. It doesn't serve a purpose as it was more of a personal challenge for me to make a self oscillating air powered machine. It uses two pneumatic toggle switches, two push button air valves, two air rams and one magnetically coupled rodless cylinder.

Cool build! Today I was just rebuilding an old bellows valvair motor. trying to get oscillation with bad poppet seals is a draw.

This reminds me of a multi-vibrator circuit I used to make as a kid for alternate flashing lights.

A single 4 way shuttle valve would do all that without extra cylinders and all those switches. Can do amazing things with air logic. Need to watch though.

Absolutely amazing. Great work! Now i have this weird idea for an Atari Punk console with an 8-step baby sequence that is powered by air ... wonder if you could somehow make a crude 555 timer with this ...

cool i like it I was wondering how was it works, now I know oh and could the magnets get off if it moves too fast ?

If I pressurize it to one side with a higher pressure than usual, I can pull them apart but they reconnect when I let go.

Wow that is really nice ! I am guessing that the air that exits the first cylinder's "exhaust" port and feeds into the second cylinder is a a pressure too low to counteract the pressurized air that makes the second cylinder act in reverse ?
@ekhalaiva85
@ekhalaiva85 5 месяцев назад
Exactly but the air doesnt releases the cylinder, instead it just compresses and joins the next cycle with new air intake. But i think it will lessen the air valve life

I like the idea, But wont that be easier to create a pulse generator circuit and use it to toggle the input of the magnetic coupled cylinder using a 5/2 solenoid?
@ProtoG42
@ProtoG42 5 месяцев назад
You’re correct but that would require electricity and there are many situations in factories where pneumatic is the only option. Even still, this could be done with a simpler pneumatic circuit. This is more of a Rube Goldberg showcasing the magnetically coupled rodless cylinder at the top.

There is like 12 or more pieces of hardware that do not need to exist. Confused. Must be just for demo or educational purpose. All this needs to be is 1 double cylinder with a few valves.

Would the magnetically coupled rodless cylinder have any issues with induction-current losses of energy when it moves back and forth along the non-magnetic, seemingly metallic, cylinder body of the piston? I am thinking that the moving magnets would induce a current in the body of the piston. If so, that would be interesting to see, maybe if you somehow used that current. Just curious.

it has a magnets in the cylinder tube and cylinder cairrage . this will magnetically couple the plunger on the inside to the cairrage on the out side were you will mount what ever you want to move. if to much force is applied , the magnetic couple will separate, instead of doing damage to the cylinder, you can reset it and continue the opperation.

I do all the travel and reversal sensing using a Arduino with common optical sensors. The sensors sense when a infrared beam has been broken. You can then use a common 12 volt pneumatic valve to reverse the air flow to the cylinder. You cab greatly simplify the system you have doing something like that. No need for all the components that do the reversing on this machine :) This guy shows the air valve in action ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dR95umuNSPY.html

The idea behind this was to make a Rube Goldberg type machine. It’s overly complicated on purpose without electronics.

Now run it at 200 PSI...
@carrolljohnston2664
@carrolljohnston2664 6 лет назад
Coleman Christy 200 psi is too high operating pressure for components used . It can be done by using air-logic components to control air pilot operated valves rated for the 200 psi operating pressure. Pneumatic control products for pressures over 150 psi are limited.

congrats, you effectively recreated tesla's earthquake machine, except you have the pressure flip a manual switch instead of having the pressure automatically change the movement direction (and of course, no airspring to conserve momentum and not slam into the wall)
