A mobile greenhouse might be ideal for you. You have a truck. Find an old messed up trailer. Tear it down, paint the frame. Put a new floor and greenhouse plastic walls, a door. Might be cheaper and last longer. Maybe even put an outlet in so you can run an extension cord for lights and heat for starting seeds.

Keep it simple ALASKA is not the most ideal place to raise animals. It’s very expensive you have to carry those chickens through the winter you’re right and just keeping it simple. Just look around you and see what you got there’s no hurry do you have everything you need already? Just relax and enjoy it.

I got a taste of living-alone-in-the-country powerlessness when I had unforseen surgery on a torn meniscus (which occured simply from turning to get out of my car seat). Six non-weight-bearing weeks is a long time for a 70yo to get around on crutches and no one to help. I remember needing to do something in the basement, realizing it might as well been the Grand Canyon, I wasn't going to be able to get down without falling and who would ever know if I wasn't capable of crawling back up? Life is tenuous when you live alone.

When we were in our mid 50s we sold our 2000 square foot home that also had another 1000 square foot of shop space. We built a small energy efficient duplex with less than 1000 square foot per unit each with only one bedroom. . We built it so there are two steps from the garage to the house.

Hi miss Alone !!! Having spent a lifetime in the farming , ranching & the being a restoration contractor , I've learned that help is essential ! Lived off grid 7 years with only solar & generator before moving here to Tennessee. My sister had many dreams & plans , but most have not happened. We do have a functional property though. Her house took much more work & dollars than she thought. I'm retired now , looking forward to finding my retirement land up there. Great job your doing !!! It's all a lot of hard work.

I've had many conversation with others on this very topic. What is remote? What is off grid? Everybody has different desires and outcomes. Hope you are living your dream, and enjoying life. In the end, that's all that matters. There will be many telling you, that you are doing it all wrong, and for them I say: "You do you, I will do me!" If you enjoy digging a ditch all day, have at it! Life is what you make it. All you need for your greenhouse now is a thermostat! (See what I did there?) :-)

With more than 30 years in real estate and having lived a lot of places. Remote generally means no road system, semi remote means you’ve got a road but are a ways out. Off grid means not connected to a public service provider but for sure Alaskans make up their own rules and terminology.

@@allabilitieshomestead6868I lived remote for a few years in a place I built over 20 years ago. I had to take a 6 miles trail with an ATV or snowmachine to get there. Back in the 1980s in had 40 acres that was fly in.

One suggestion, you might want to put a piece of duct tape or fabric in between the plastic and the clips so the plastic doesnt get worn/ripped from the sharp hard plastic on the clips.

Bigfoot don't like trail cameras ...according to Scott carpenter...trail cameras are a good deterrant against bigfoot....also they can see the infrared light spectrum that the cameras give off

Great resourcefulness!! A tip... we tarp over hay and found that if we roll the tarp under... the rain water will run off rather than sit within the tarp folds. Enjoy watching your vision come to life!!

It's refreshing to hear someone telling it like it is. Those that start homesteading for the romance of it don't typically last more than 2-3 years. Be sure to put a good vapor barrier between your new greenhouse and the logs of your cabin wall. Greenhouses are notorious for the amount of humidity they generate which creates a great environment for mildew, which will eat your logs in a couple years.

I would buy something already done with low maintenance so i could enjoy life more hunting fishing checking out the life there and what they are doing. Moving there and working every day would suck. She's a strong woman. She probably likes working. I do but i want to be finished with it. Not have to do it every day, and it never gets done, and I'm too old to fully enjoy it.

As a 69-year-old single woman living remotely in WA state I move logs around my property with a large hand truck, and my property is not all graded and level so I'm dealing with differing elevations and such. I also use it to move large pots for plants, trash cans and whatever else will fit on it. I hear you on the goals. I've managed to tackle about 2/3 of them since moving here seven years ago. It's a constant work in progress, but a labor of love as well. I applaud you on what you've accomplished since you moved there.

Hi Alone! So good to see you in another video! Hon, you can definitely put in a shallow well, or a hand dug well, or sand point well, the supply cost is around 1,100.00 - for the pipe, driver pole with pointed end with filter in the pounted end/driver. And then tbe cost of having a man or two drive it into tbe ground by hand for you. You have soil there where the trees are, then you can drive it, usually between 18 to 25 feet deep, then put a cast iron pump/handle on tbe top. I'd put in two, if I were you, one with the lift handle and end to attach a garden hose onto - the other with the old fashion pump handle. But yes, you can do it there for sure. Just cover them during the winter months to help keep tbe exposed piping from freezing. I'd definitely go that route. Its definitely cost effective. They do exist there in Alaska, but some folk prefer water catchment. Just pump the water until it runs clear, once clear take a clean water sample in for testing to be drinkable, once cleared by a water plant, youre all clear and good to go. They have them in everywhere there. Anyways, best wishes my friend!

I love your conversation about what it really means to live off grid or remote. And help people do get caught up on a lot of that stuff. It’s true that raising chickens is really a lot of work and even having a big garden is a lot of work. There’s a lot of things that are required to do that, such as feed and dirt and fertilizer, etc. it isn’t always necessary to do every single thing. Good conversation about that.

A video short that I watched the other day had a good tip for moving heavy logs. The channel is called "Woodsbound Outdoors". He attaches some rope to the log then fastens it to another log that is used as a pry bar. Might be helpful in a pinch. Best wishes 👍❤️

Alone, you are doing a wonderful job. Everyone has different ideas of what off-grid, homesteading and/or self-sufficent is. Do what you feel is best for you. You already bought your dream property in the area you want to live. No need to stress yourself out because another channel did what you did but used new materials. My interest in channels like yours is that I learn how to do things with what I have without feeling the need to buy new stuff. Where you live it is freezing cold and wildlife literaly is at your front/back door. Since you are not able to go outside, then you can work on projects indoors. It is being able to change gears during unforceiable circumstances and continue to move forward. A few years ago, I moved to the country (in usa). My home is similar to a British aristocrate's estate...only smaller and no live stock. I purposely did this so if I did not want to leave my home, I have everything I need already in my home.

I suggest that you get a log claw or timber jack log lift. It really helps with handling logs. And a yard glider might be helpful.

Hi Alone, I did a much simpler solution. No heavy lifting involved! 😅Shelves with a roll up and down plastic system, held in place with elastic band with hooks. Planting in pots. It survived the winter. I had a polytunnel, but it got damaged in a storm last summer. Like you, some plans change and never happens. I still dream of a greenhouse, and the dream has changed from the charming one, to an A frame wooden structure with thick polycarbonate walls, one that can withstand both snowload and severe winds. 🙂 So far from May 1st until today, we have had wonderful warm sunny days. My tomato plants has flowers on them already they grow in pots. Will be colder this week, but I do hope we get a lot of tomatoes before the frost. You did great though! But still would suggest shelves inside the structure, for smaller plants like salads and herbs.

Repurpose old refrigerators into raised beds, and then turn them in to coldframes for winter . They work amazingly for that, because they are already insulated!!! (and free!) Grow "cold hardy " veggies until probably Dec 15 in your zone. Scrounge a shower door for the glass lid.

My little greenhouse is made by bending overseveral cattle panels. I rigged it so it fits over my garden beds and can be moved when I rotate the beds. It's very strong, but because of the high winds, I do have to tether it. Just using what I had, too.

Do you have an estimate of what the material will coast to build. That rig will work just fine. Other ideas for adds . You can make a lot of heat with compost! Some growers heat their greenhouses with compost bins. Pretty sure Ron and Johanna do that. They live in Alberta, BC, full time. Anything BLACK absorbs sun, as you know, But black plastic is PVC toxic! So My new wierd idea is to use charcoal...

I have just finished autumn cleaning, laying a new lawn, putting logs round the beds as a border. Lots of hard work. Now it's cold at night but not too bad during the day.

Summer is indeed the busy season. The money done been spent, got 13.6 KW of solar power, 3 40 ft connexes, 12 acres, a big hole for my log cabin's basement and a bunch of rebar, most of my survival gear, winch on my van, and a plow truck If I really need to get dug out, This past two weeks I have been preparing a 52 ft spruce log (beetle killed) to stand up in between two connexes, with a platform on top holding the starlink reciever, 4 guy wires lightning rod excetera. The log has been debarked, planed, then sanded, and the painting with shellac has started. Lolly pole 30 ft tall will be used to lift the 52 foot log into position and hold it while I tension the guy wires and chain the base to the connex. support beams then get installed to keep it in position, and the connexes lashed together. there will not be a concrete base, instead will place it on a cottonwood log with some channel aluminum pieces mounted on the log to keep it up off the cottonwood, That is just one project of many. Prep and pour the cement floor for the log cabin basement, prep and pour the forms for the basement walls (note to self: embed electrical wiring in conduit in the walls before pouring the cement). Build temporary roof over the basement for the winter so I don't have 10 ft of snow in the basement. Go dipnetting Kenai river, go dipnetting copper river below the bridge. Haul my big birch logs up from the slough, debark them and build a winter shelter over them so they dry. Looks like gonna need more plastic sheeting. This will be my third summer.😁

I just bought a DIY preppers book which I really like it. It’s very easy to follow and it teaches how to make everything and do a lot of repairs which I’ve never done before and now I’m going to learn. It has instructions on how to make your own greenhouse, which is pretty simple and kind of fun. I’m going to try it myself.

single woman living remote in very cold mountainous region of USA - when i go to the local market i look for a guy who looks like he's been working all day - and strong -strike up a conversation about the weather or whatever - make sure he's a neighbor and ask if he does handywork - every time they've said yes and always live within a reasonable distance - i now have 5 guys who all have different skill sets - my very own crew - AND - everyone of these guys have tools to do about anything on God's green earth -so i can reach out when i need help

I would suggest that you use a temporary hoop greenhouse, you can build one with reclaim wood and 6 mill plastic sheeting. I use a 250 gallon tanks, I have water delivered in 1200 gallon loads that cost $60.00 a load. I'm waiting on my well base, and electric cord for my well, and then I'll have plenty of water. I use alot of reclaim wood, metal, and other metals, with the exception for supporting tembers. You need a log Dolly, an axel with wheels, and a rope to tie the log to it, and one rope to pull it. The dolly will keep the front of the log off the ground and allow you to pull it easy over the ground. Geothermal heating will allow you to grow year round, and I'm putting one in here so I can grow any fruit trees, and vegetables all year, and our temperature drop to -30. Very nice job on your temporary greenhouse, I got a roll of the plastic sheeting you used, did it cost you $200.00 like mine did?. I don't know if you read my comment a day or so ago, but Twosocks passed away two days ago, she died from twisted gut. She will be greatly missed. I live in Southern Colorado on five acres, one thing you should do is find out all laws and codes are met. It will save you much headache in the long run. Also check your water sources, and watch out for scamers. The biggest reason for most failures in off grid living, is that people don't do their research well.

@@jackbrown7341 thank you so much for that. I do know the area I am looking into will be needing a well drilled and also solar for electrical but my goal right now is to snag some property and then work on building it up to off grid over the next 10/15 years to keep myself from going broke. I also own a home currently in western slope Colorado so I will continue to stay here until the kids have flown the nest. Also, I am allowed to build a 600 ft tiny home on the said property.

@@HippieMountainMama you can build any size of home you want, remember in your research, that any rule, code or ordinance that violates Any of Your Rights or Liabilities, is no law at all, and cannot be enforce. You have a Right to Pursue Happiness, and as long as your actions doesn't hurt anyone else or cost them financially, you can do as you like. And when you live off grid, you must have backup systems in place, things always brake down on holidays and weekends. It's beneficial that you have plenty of time yet, you can research it all and hope the prices come down.

I have chickens, they are now eight years old!. Not laying much but they do come when they are called. Feed started at $24 it is now $47. My girls don't get rotten or spoiled food. That's extra cost and they are alot of work in the winter from going out four times a day to give them fresh water and feed to insuring they have a heat source when it's -30. Yes the eggs are nice but there is no way i can butcher them. I would live off beans and rice first. And there is having to shovel snow to get to the coop, that can mean four times a day in the winter.

You should grow micro greens.grow them in the cabin.grow them from 4 to 6 inches .it will take 8 to 10 days.you will get 40 percent extra vitamins and minerals from them.because you are eating the plants young.than letting them grow into adult plant.which would use up that extra 40 percent.

Great job on the greenhouse, it’s perfect. The first year we moved off grid, I built one very similar . The plants done care and you will be loving all the fresh food that makeshift greenhouse gave you. Cheers 🌷🇨🇦

Have you looked into raised beds with hinged covers? There is a RU-vid channel that has some pretty good tutorials for this. We have 5 that are 4x8 feet and gain over a month growing season outside. Our greenhouse already has small zucchini squash, the tomatoes and bush beans have flowers. We have been eating lettuce from it for over a month. They have subscriptions for medical evacuation from air ambulance services. It is $100 per year or a lifetime subscription for $1,000. They will pick you up right in your yard. We cleared a nice landing area at our remote cabin for this.
