Love the idea of converting it to a shorter dress! If I want to maybe keep it around and try to wear it again later, do I still need to preserve it to prevent yellowing?

Generally, if you'll be going 1.5+ years between wears, it could be a good idea to preserve it. Be sure to keep it in a dark, dry environment (low humidity, no sun exposure) when storing it if you decide not to preserve it. If it does yellow, there are restoration services you can use to get it back to the original (or as close as possible) state.

Thanks for this - super useful! Can all dresses be converted to be less weddingy, or is that option limited to certain styles? I would love to convert mine after the wedding, but it's quite stiff and ballgowny!

Ballgowns might not convert as well but you can always take it to your seamstress and see what they think :)

I'm a hobby sewist and would even say that it is very difficult with most modern wedding dresses because they are SO specific and elaborate (also, often VERY revealing ...). At least here in Germany, dying synthetic fabrics is only possible in very pale colours (bright dyes for synthetics might be available in other countries which are forbidden here) and I've hardly ever seen convincing wedding dress to normal evening dress conversions.

That's a good overview over all the options! :) I would have loved to rent a dress (but I'm very short and you can hardly alter rented dresses) and I still would love to sell my dress. But same problem - very few women are as short as I am and most will wear high heels while I will be wearing flats. Selling a wedding dress is already extremely difficult in Germany, even if the dress is brand new, and second-hand store only take dresses from tall women. So ... I don't know. I absolutely do NOT want to keep it in the closet or put it into a frame. So ... I'm a bit at a loss. I like my dress a lot (and fortunately, it was not that expensive), but looking back, I really wish I would have gotten a completely plain dress from natural fibres that can be dyed easily. My dress already is quite plain, but made from synthetics and I don't like pastel colours.

I completely understand! Would you consider altering it into a shorter dress and wearing it on anniversaries? Another option might be to donate it - I’m not sure if you can do tax write offs in Germany but here in America you can and it’s a nice thing to donate wedding dresses. There are usually some specific charities that only do wedding dresses.

Thanks for the video! 😀 I decided to preserve the dress in case someone I know would want to wear it in the future

Yay! It’s kind of fun getting it back in the box. It’s like a little present 🥰

What you do if your dress has been hanging in the closet for like 12-15 years and need to get it ready in 6 months time?

I would take it out of the closet and give it a good look over to see what state it is in. If it looks ok, congratulations! You won’t need to do anything. Depending on how it now fits, you might need some alterations. If there is a stain that has been on the dress that long, it won’t come out and you’ll need to consult a bridal seamstress to discuss removing or covering the offending area. If the dress has yellowed, you need to decide if you like the new color. There are restoration services that can usually get the yellowing out but it is pricey ($500-1000) and doesn’t guarantee perfection. If it’s just musty but not yellowed then regular dry cleaning will help. Best of luck! Let me know how it goes.
