Joe, been watching you for 2 or 3 years now and I’ve only commented a couple of times. But you have extraordinary patience and are also very even tempered! I have noticed (since yt started rotating comments) just how stupid and rude many of the comments are, very poor! I am a retired Navy Captain, you are a good young man!

Agreed, Joe comes across as a really good guy. He has a great voice and sounds exactly like my best friend from years ago, who was an excellent mechanic. We used to ride and wrench our bikes together, and I'd get on his case for doing the same ignoring-good-ventilation stuff I see Joe doing in his videos...and died from cancer just before the pandemic. Hearing Joe speaking almost brings tears to my eyes at times, I still miss him most every day and every time I watch one of Joe's videos. So I can't help but nag Joe about it.

Agreed. This is why I will always stick to 2 strokes. It’s pretty simple and straightforward, and actually fun to work on. Most 4 strokes are a big pain to work on, and you really get frustrated at them. Plus, I can’t give up the power valve. It feels like a nitrous shot once it kicks in. Gives you an adrenaline rush every time!

Couple suggestions. There are a few companies that Replate cylinders. Replate being new Nikasil Plating. These cylinders are not steel bores. They are Nikasil Chrome plated. The service typically cost under $300 including shipping to and from. Power Seal and Millennium are two companies that come to mind. Your cylinder comes back looking brand new and the bore is 100% to spec. Much better than an expensive used cylinder. Second your not supposed to hone Nikasil Cylinders as the coating it very thin and hard and most standard hones won’t created usable cross hatch. A Diamond hone is needed. Some other advise I would give since I’m assuming your flipping these bikes is that I would use Namura Piston Kits. They are very good pistons, come with or without gaskets and are priced very good. On this build you probably would have saved $200
@baitmaster8706
@baitmaster8706 4 месяца назад
Man you seem knowledgeable on cylinders but why would he do the cylinder the right way just to put a shit piston in it?. Joe's reputation is worth more than the savings between Namura and Pro-X, he doesn't have to be scummy to make a profit. Don't get me wrong, I buy chinese parts but not for my big bikes. My PW80 that I use for tool/beer runs (shed to garage, not to the store) has a namura cylinder and piston on it and it already looks like shit with about 6 hours on it. That bike makes like 4.79hp, I'd hate to see what a Namura does in a real engine.

Hello, To me you seem to be a nice, warm hearted guy. What troubles me is that I get the impression that you get fariytales from sellers and endning up paying to much for the bikes. I would have taken along some basic tools/equipment to the seller. When seller gives a vital statement - I would have asked the seller if I could see for myself. If the seller says no, then I would walk away or offer a much lower amount of money. If the seller agrees and I see that the seller is wrong - I have a way to get it for the right price. Some people feel bad about not telling the truth. Some people just feels great getting away with a lie that the buyer do not spot. But you seem to know all this. I get a kick out of watching your work on RU-vid. Keep up the handy work.😊

During these winter time repairs you seem to be breathing a lot of fumes. Be careful because it is the accumulation the will get you sick. By the way, we just got 2 feet of snow.

Agreed. Joe, please use better ventilation whenever you run these machines indoors. There are a lot of trace metals and chemicals in assembly lubes and 2T oils, that stuff will build up in your body over time, and lead to illnesses years later. This is a big deal that you cannot undo,, after symptoms appear. I've lost several friends to cancer, endocrine, and liver disease, all directly attributed to long-term contact this stuff. They were mechanics (automotive and aircraft) that also didn't take care to minimize or avoid exposure, just as you are now. Seriously, don't troll your audience on this - you are setting a bad example for impressionable young (and not so young) minds.

Big fan and I wait for every single video to drop. Today something dawned on me though… Well, actually it has before but… You go through the whole bike top to bottom front to back and on the four strokes you adjust valves and you always measure your piston ring end gap, but I've never once seen you Measure your piston to cylinder wall clearance? Never once. How come? And I know people are going to jump on here and say "well, he's using a known bore size and a known piston size"… But that doesn't always work..... actually most engine builders wouldn't even consider throwing a piston in without measuring the piston to cylinder wall clearance. Just wondering why you don't? But love the content!!!

he checked it without the ring (by feel).....I mean it either clears or it doesn't. If you arent planning custom machine work and it seems "good enough" I say run it. Its just a dirt bike after all.

I mean, I totally get what you're saying and I've done it too and gotten away with it but it's just nice to know your actual clearance because there is a known figure for that. I mean, you know what I'm saying. I'm certainly not teaching you anything. With piston growth and all that sometimes if you're a few thousands shy you could wind up sticking a piston. Like Wiseco pistons for example. It can be very critical to make sure you have at least the minimum clearance recommended due to it being a forged piston. They didn't get the nickname "SeizeCo" for nothing!!! 😂 That's all I'm trying to say. Thanks for the response.

It never hurts to have a little extra oil in the gas, especially on break in. I always used to mix my gas a bit rich on the oil and never had any trouble with fouling out plugs. A little smoke is better than replacing the top end all the time 👍

Sounds great. I always mix my gas 40:1 initially it was because 4 gallons to 16 oz Jug of HP2 Honda Synthetic 2 stroke oil which... is my favorite by far. I also only use VP 110 racing fuel that I can get at the pump at a gas station near me. is just that easy. But then I talked to a guy at the local shop and he told me that counter to what you would think, running 32:1 actually runs at a slightly higher temp, because the additional friction by the viscosity of the gas being a little bit thicker, I don't know if that is true, but also although I like the 2 stroke smoke, I don't like how much a bike smokes with 32:1

chamfer the air transfer holes with dimond grinder 90 degre grinder helps to get at them easier. Also use dingleballs for cross hatch. Port exaust and intakes. The RM was made to scream . Do a old Elsinore video. Have old friends that died and got crippled on these bikes.

For the love of God, please stop using gasket maker. If you clean your gasket surfaces properly, you don't need it. It just get inside the engine and messes things up. If you are doing a "I need it fixed" to get home kinda thing, that's fine, but not on a permanant fix.

Raise the sea clip up on the carburetor slide for the metering rod Levi got a inconel liner in a cylinder you're not supposed to hunt them let that thing sit there in idle for 15 minutes for 2 or 3 Cycles before you go riding you'll cold seize it that's what it look like happened to it before but it is a clean looking bike

Good job. I personally would worry more about how the jetting is for the warm weather it will likely be ridden in, not how it runs when its cold out.
