I think the point is to have an incentive for people to recycle their phones that they would have just thrown away regardless. Most people don’t want to go through the hassle of fixing and reselling a phone and probably really don’t care enough to. It’s better than tossing it and having it end up in a landfill.

Any of these would be a great improvement over my IPhone 6. I spent about 20 hours on fixing an IPhone 4 I found after cars ran over it. I tried returning it to its owner but the service provider could identify the owner so they told me to keep it. I got it to work when connected to my pc but the display never worked. I took it to a repair shop to see if I had done something wrong. They only charged me 50$ for a full tear down and rebuild. They spent hours trying to get it to work, they did not want to charge me because it did not work. I ended up giving the agreed original price which I felt was more than reasonable.
