I agree, as a fellow cattleman, my favorite time of year is seeing the newborn calves come and in the weeks that follow seeing them run, jump and play. To me, that is what it's all about, and taking care of them and seeing them grow, and keeping back some good looking heifers and watching them grow into cows and seeing how their calves compare. It is always hard to sell the calves, even harder to sell some of the older cows that was kept maybe just a year or three too long. Thanks for all your vids Mike. God bless and I hope it's a good check for ya.

I really appreciate your work! You’ve got a humane, yet realistic way to farming. Most people like to romanticize it, ignoring that there is the less fortunate parts of farming like selling calves or sending cows to feedlots etc. (or the alternative... calling the farmers the bad guys ugh.) You make sure to mention the reality of farming, all the while showing the good to real farming and that’s really admirable! I’d prefer a real ranch-raised beef or dairy than some of the alternatives.

that's one thing I learned about cows, is separating, One thing I did find out is that a lot of the mooing is the mothers looking for her calf, I heard that a mother and calf can pace up to I forget how many miles, mooing and not eating properly and not gain weight.One vet in Canada forget his name, He came up with a nose tag to help keep the cow and calves calm during the time when its time to ween the calves, but some of the calves learn how to flip the nose tag out of the way. was to help stop em from sucking but every idea has a back draw. I do love cows,they do give man so much, like meat, leather, glue, money, milk products etc

What I know about ranching. Always a lot to do. You make a list and it’s long. The most important at the top. Urgent. Some days the whole list is urgent. You can’t get it all done and you add the leftover to the next day. You never get done. But it’s addicting too

Depends on your state. I have noticed Montana, Wyoming, Colorado all use horses fairly often to help with ranching. I think it is as much about tradition as anything. I grew on Missouri and Kansas border and it's far less common in those states.

Another awesome video thanks mate! I see others have raised this question too, but I just wondered if you've considered contacting a mobile dairyman at all? I've heard they have large milk parlour trailers and travel from farm to farm. You may find, as you have many cows, that they'd be prepared to come to you and finish off the milk cycle of your cows, and then keep any milk, hopefully costing you nothing! Just thinking of the cows in pain, and your family not sleeping, and still needing to work! Wish you all the best mate, thanks for sharing!😀👍

I work in a slaughter house, I have seen hundreds of thousands of cows and bulls slaughtered. It used to bother me in the beginning, but a necessity. Now those cattle are more of an object, a number. I have distanced my feelings from their purpose in life, but what still hurts me is to see when get to the company hurt or sickling looking. I don't mind how they are slaughtered, is a super quick and I dare hope is as painless and quick death as it seems to be.

I always wonder what the cows are saying to each other as they stand there and low at each other. Are they discussing the weather? What Mike is wearing today? Are they playing a cow version of Marco Polo?? We may never know.... You and your neighbors help each other out herding your cows for auction. As long as that takes, I assume y'all each go to auction on different days. Do you get together with them to determine the scheduling for the year or just hope that 3 other people aren't doing it on the same day y'all are? Thanks for another great video!
@OurWyomingLife
@OurWyomingLife 6 лет назад
I would say Marco Polo. I guess we have never planned it out. There are a few different sales barns within the same distance, they all sell on different days, so it seems to work out. Depending on when you calve you may sell on a different date, and then there is always the issue of lining up a trucker to get them there. We have run into a few scheduling conflicts but usually it just works out :) - Mike

Just to let people know, beef has been excluded from the universal Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) requirement. Therefore, animals from Canada, Mexico, central and south America can be shipped into the USA, slaughtered and processed here, then be labeled "Product of the USA." This cheaper beef brings down the price of American raised beef by as much as $300 per head, and makes it less profitable for American ranchers to make a living by selling their true "Product of the USA" beef at auction. Beef needs to be returned to the mandatory COOL labeling program so American consumers can know for sure where the beef they purchase at the market comes from and can make an informed choice when they buy beef products!
