Don't buy an Icom 7300 when there's a Flex Radio out there.
The FLEX-6400 offers the latest direct sampling SDR technology at an economical price for the general HF/6m operator yet it offers great performance for chasing DX and contesting.
The FLEX-6400 model is designed for the Ham who wants to operate the radio exclusively as a server from PC, laptop, Maestro, Mac*, or iOS clients - whether local or remote. Both models share the same game-changing band awareness, industry-leading phase noise performance, brick wall filters, and legendary audio performance to deliver you the most fun across a wide variety of operating styles.
With a PC, laptop, or Mac client you can utilize up to two 7 MHz spectrum/waterfall displays and independent receivers to revolutionize your view of the bands. Its two receivers can be placed simultaneously on any band and mode with instant QSY between VFOs. Digital mode operation is a dream with no sound cards, cables, or boxes needed.
FlexRadio’s industry-leading SmartSDR™ software offers compatibility across the entire FLEX-6000 Signature Series family to deliver continuous leveraged software enhancement. And you can use the latest SmartLink™ technology to access your radio virtually anywhere from any SmartSDR compatible client with only a login and password - even your iPhone.
Icom IC 7300 is Icom's latest SDR HF/50 MHz Transceiver. It offers 100W of power and receives from 0.030 to 74.800 MHZ. It operates on SSB, CW, RTTY, AM and FM modes. The Icom IC-7300 features a RF direct sampling system, 15 discrete band-pass filters, a real-time spectrum scope and a large 4.3" color touch screen display. Additional features of the IC-7300 include a built-in automatic antenna tuner, 101 channels, SD memory card slot and 3 CW functions. In the box you will find the IC-7300 transceiver, a HM-219 hand microphone, DC power cable, fuses and plugs.
Output power: 100W (25W AM)
RX Frequencies: 0.030-74.800
RF direct sampling system
The IC-7300 employs an RF direct sampling system, where RF signals are directly convert to digital data. Then processed in the FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array), making it possible to simplify the circuit construction as well as reduce noise that can mask weak signals.
The new “IP+” improves the 3rd order intercept point (IP3) performance improving the ability to copy a weak signal that is adjacent to either a strong interfering signal. In this process, A/D converter is optimized to reduce or eliminate signal distortion.
RMDR and phase noise characteristics
The IC-7300’s RMDR is about 97dB* (typical value) improving the Phase Noise characteristics by about 15dB (at 1 kHz frequency separation). The superior Phase Noise characteristics reduce noise components for both receive and transmit signals.
* At 1 kHz frequency separation (received frequency: 14.2MHz, MODE: CW, IF BW: 500Hz)
15 discrete band-pass filters
The RF Direct Sampling is protected by an array of bandpass filters. The signal passes through one of the fifteen bandpass filters, where signals outside the passband are rejected. To reduce the insertion loss, the IC-7300 utilizes High Q factor coils.
Large color touch screen
The large 4.3” color TFT touch LCD offers intuitive operation of functions, settings, and various operational visual aids such as the band scope, waterfall function, and audio scope.
Like on the high-end rigs, the waterfall shows a change of signal strength over a period of time and allows you to find weak signals that may not be apparent on the spectrum scope.
Use the audio scope function to observe various AF TX/RX characteristics such as microphone compressor level, filter width, notch filter width and keying waveform in the CW mode. Image below shows the Audio scope with the waterfall function and the oscilloscope.
Real-Time spectrum scope
You no longer have to choose whether to listen to the audio or have the spectrum scope sweep for signals as the IC-7300’s real-time spectrum scope offers the simultaneous operations found in some of the more expensive rigs! This means you can use either the spectrum scope or the waterfall to quickly move to an intended signal while listening to the receiver audio. The ‘7300’s touch screen introduces a “Magnify” function. So, when you first touch the scope screen around the intended signal, the touched part is magnified. A second touch of the scope screen changes the operating frequency and allows you to accurately tune.

Have you given thought to simply adding the PTRX module to the 7300 and then you could hook it to a computer monitor. Doesn’t solve the coax thru the house problem but it does solve the small screen issue.

i was thinking getting a FlexRadio for used remote at my job , but i decide to buy a IC7610 and use the Icom RS-BA1 v2 IP Remote Control Software allows you to use an Icom compatible radio installed in another room using your home network or even from a remote location over the Internet plus i will get the Icom RC-28 is an optional USB encoder that can be used with the RS-BA1 IP Remote Control Software .This device will connect to the USB port on your PC via the supplied USB cable. Utilizing the same tuning knob and encoder used on Icom HF radios, this accessory provides a "radio-feel" option to complement the IP remote control software. The RC-28 controls features a sturdy push-to-talk and two user-programmable function keys.

Tom, do you believe you'll benefit out of a super ultra ham radio if your antenna doesn't match that radio grade? A vertical is noisy on RX and won't offer you the gain and ability to beam it to where you want. I always invest more money on antennas than on radios. The same applies to cameras or do you believe photographs are great with cheap lenses? Antennas are lenses, they make your picture fine, focused and shine. Have that in mind.

I have a Flex 1500, that I use remotely. Like you the rig is not in my shack but elsewhere on my property (my garage). The rig is pretty much at the feed point and no issues with coax in the house and family. The Flex-1500 is not built for this kind of remote use, so I'd loved to upgrade to a more modern Flex rig (or similar), but the solution I have mainly built with stuff I had works well for now.

I know you mentioned having multiple antennas which is great, but what I found out in my research of the 6400 is it only has 1 spectral capture unit, which means you can listen to 2 bands at once but it will only allow you to receive on the same antenna. The A and B receivers are always stuck on the same antenna for receive. If that’s something important to you that’s something you should think about. I know I almost bought the 6400 until I found this out in my research. The 6600 does allow you to have different antennas assigned to different receivers, but it’s $2k more which pretty much killed me buying the flex radio for me.

Sounds like your excited to give the Flex a try. Go for I!. If you decide it's not for you, you can sell it. Actually I think you have 30 days to return it if not happy. Hard to learn everything, play, and make a decision in 30 days though. I owned a Flex 6300 and sold it. The reason was because I'm not a Windows guy and had a hard time problem solving and setting up via Windows. Now they work with Mac OS and iOS which is a game changer for me. I'm considering giving it another shot. I really loved the ability to get rid of interfering nearby channels with the TNF feature. You can literally 100% block interference. They're other features that are very good too. It's all about excitement, fun, and trying new things. This just cost a little more....:)

I got rid of my 7300 and picked up a Flex6600. The 6600 has better front in filters but the 6400 is a fine radio. Ham Radio 2.0 has 2 of them and one of them they leave in Costa Rica. They operate it remotely in Costa Rica from Texas and have had it down there for over a year. Now, the 7300 I did not sell but traded it for an AL-811H amplifier which I love as well. But, I have recently bought a 705 for portable use and it is a brilliant radio. I love Icom and Flex. Nice thing about Flex is that they are built down the road in Austin. I looked at the 6400 really hard, decided against it mainly because of some of the issues people were having with them...if you get the internal tuner there could be issues and needing to roll back the software to a version that works... I think the tuner everyone is using on flex is the palstar auto tuner, $1500.00...might be wrong on the price but its higher than mfj models... Hey Nigel great comment. Many people have been giving me a hard time for this, but it looks like an awesome radio. I just hope the 6400 is good enough instead of the 6600. I will test out WIFI with the Maestro then I'll run a wire if I have to. I'm excited but it's on 2 month backorder.

I own an Icom 7300 and Flex 6300/Maestro. If you ever want to setup in the field like Field Day or POTA, you will wish that you kept that Icom 7300. Nobody takes Flex rigs to the field. Also it is nice to have a back up radio just in case your Flex needs service....just my 2 cents. Of course, money is always the issue.....or is it XYLs are always the issue....hi hi.

I have several HF radios but my main radio is a Flex 6600M, with the HDMI output feeding a 53" 4K LG TV Set.. Spectrum Scope is so cool!! But my main number 1 top reason for going with Flex was Software Enhancements.. Unlike the BIG THREE, that make releases to fix bugs for the first 6-12 months,, Flex gives you an entirely new platform with major software upgrades. I had the 2.XXX software but then came along 3.XXX... Now you do have to pay $200 for the new revision,, but with so much invested in ham radio gear, does $200 mean that much, plus it does cost Flex $$$$ to develop software.. So spending $200 every few years is fine with me... Being a complex radio, it does have its quarks, but once you understand what you can and can not do with the radio, you are fine. But in the end it is up to the end user to select what works for them.. Good Luck and enjoy!!!

My advise, invest in a antenna system instead of a radio. hooking up a flex to some some whip antennas in the backyard seems pointless to me, Keep the 7300 and get a 50 foot mast with a beam in it, same money huge difference. You won't believe what you can work.

You can remote the 7300 to your computer, as well. That gives you the ability to see the screen better. Much cheaper option. It also let's you operate the 7300 from anywhere, over the internet. IDK...that $3k could do alot in the antenna department. The "new radio bug" is pretty powerful. But do you really need it? There are things the flex does better than the 7300. There are things the flex does that the 7300 doesn't. But, the 7300 is a pretty good radio, and you already have it. $3k would also buy alot of amplifier....lol.

You bring up good points Mike, but the question 'do you really need it' would have stopped me from ever getting into this hobby! : ) I might let the 7300 hang around for a while before I sell, but that 800 or so could help cut a chunk out.
@Veets-VA3VMD
@Veets-VA3VMD 3 года назад
Don’t sell the 7300 until you’ve had an opportunity to operate the Flex for a period of time. The FLEX and Apache Lab SDR’s are great radios, but I caution if you’re not technically savvy with computers this can be an issue for some. I have been contemplating for over a year of moving off my 7300 but I really can’t justify or convince myself to do so, however if I was going to move to the higher echelon, I would seriously consider the flex or Apache lab SDR‘s. The 7300 still has the capability of operating from within your own location or LAN as well as being able to bring the 7300 up on your computer screen as well.... so there are options for those scenarios.. checkout VA3VMD QRZ for details. Good Luck!

As sleepy (and senile) Joe would say " C'mon.....man..." !! LOL. Among dozens and dozens of other rigs, I have 3 x Flex rigs and 2 x Icom IC-7300 rigs. I used to use the Flex rigs most of the time. For the past 3 or 4 years, I only use one of my 2 x 7300 rigs - love them. Screen too small ? no way Tom - your FT-891 has a screen 1/4 the size and you don't have issue with that. Flex rigs are great, make no mistake....just the IC-7300 can be picked up and taken to your moms house so easily...or to the park etc. I think you will get another 7300 when you start missing it, and I believe that will happen.

Good luck Tom.. you'll need it. I stay up all night listening to the old farts on 80.. bitching about their flex nightmares, computer nightmares, win10 nighmares, echo nightmares, etc. They spend 90% of their air time troubleshooting their systems. And complaining that Flex abandoned the ham community when they went with their military riches. I have nothing against Flex.. I'm just the devil on your shoulder I guess. Also had to laugh last week when a VERY popular net on 40 phone kept repeatedly asking everyone to "allow a second or so for Flex and remote delay". Sadly for most Flex users, the hobby becomes one of never ending tweaks and fiddling with the convoluted system.. and not talking to one another. 73

Yeah I hear what you are saying, but my issue now is, my 7300 is sitting in the garage (it used to be in the basement) and it's tied to the coax there closest to the back yard. If the weather is too hot or cold I basically don't go out there. Plus there's mice and spiders. So I end up not being on the air much. Hopefully this will work out...plus I am a Windows guy, programming is my job so I shouldn't have Win problems. Thanks fer great comment.

I can tell that you have pretty much made up your mind judging from your reply comments. The Flex radio is a fantastic system and there are many good reasons a person would want to go that route. YOUR reason, because of "running coax through the house" is not a reason to do so, in my opinion. You could easily route your coax outside (and inconspicuously) around the outside of your house without having to go through the inside of the house. You can run a single coax cable and then put a remote antenna switch at the far end if you want multiple antennas and have an aversion to multiple coax runs. Good luck with your decision.
