As a consumer one thing I would want is variety in a 6 pack. For instance, instead of 6 scotch kale maybe 3 scotch 3 dinosaur. Or for the marigolds maybe 3 white with 3 yellow. Just a thought for something that would pull me in.
I have thought so as well, I love having different varieties but like the value in buying more than 1 plant. I have tossed around the idea of starting a tomato variety pack. Couple romas, couple slicers, a cherry and a fun color one. Also doing like a salsa/pasta sauce pack, 2 tomatoes, 2 peppers and 2 cilantro or basil or even green onion. It would be so fun!
I have had something on my heart to sell plant starts for a few years now. I am not a master gardener by any means. I opened an LLC in November/December of 2022 with plans to give it my first try this year. Wish me luck! :)
I would love to see you offer a small discount or bonus plant if people returned the pots to you. It encourages less waste and less garbage, and keeps people mindful of the plastic they're throwing away. Also keeps people keen to see you again :)
My husband built me a greenhouse last winter. When I planted, I planted too much, so I sold my extra from my greenhouse. I plan to do the same this year. I’m a terrible introvert so it was really hard. I sold way to cheap, lesson learned. Thank you so much for the pep talk 😊🙏🏻
With being on disability this is something I can do and I really NEED to. Hahahahaha Thank you for all the teaching and inspiration you give us! Your the BEST!!!
I was thinking of doing this and then also in the end of summer fall when people don’t have access to plant starts. I think that might be a cool way to maximize how much you can make. Big box stores don’t offer plant starts for fall garden plants like cabbage, broccoli, Brussels ect. Just a thought that I was having last year when I was trying to do a fall garden and got a late start and was looking for started brassicas
I cannot thank u enough! Last year was my first attempt at selling plants and covid messed me up. BUT the lady I buy feed from told me to bring some plants (yes in tacky solo cups!🙄) but hey! I made $500 plus and then spent it chickens/equipment/feed! Lol I’m tickled she’s asked me to do again this year and I’m spiffing things up! It’s the price where I get intimidated. We have some thrifty folks in East Ar! But I have church family that I can give to also so there’s that! Love ur videos!
Last year was my first time selling starts. I found that many people who bought from me had no idea how to grow veggies. They just wanted to give it a try. Others only wanted the standard hybrids that they knew about like Better Boys and Beefsteaks. I was selling mostly heirlooms and they were varities that I loved and had grown for their special taste. I added some of those hybrids with the familar names and people were happier. I guess you have to know your customer base. I just wanted people to try some great tasting tomatoes. Herbs did really well as well as sunflower starts. I'm looking for a new place this year as the place I was last year is not availble to me this spring. Our farmers market in town requires you to have a business license and pay 30.00 per market. That cuts way into my profit and they have a lot of rules about how you set up and signage. The are way too regulated for me to enjoy.
Yes on the cleanliness. I have passed at markets because the person selling does not present themselves professionally...and even a farmer professional look. Cleanliness is key!!
Please grow parsley and cilantro 🌿. I couldn’t find them even in the grocery store last year. I’m growing my own this year, but I plan to give pots of them to loved ones because they’re cold hearty ( and delicious). 😋. Great too for rabbits. Settles their stomach from any stress. 🐇
Hey Jill! You mentioned taking detailed notes about your garden in a previous video, would you be willing to show us what type of information you record?
I would be interested in this. I started recording garden things this year. Varieties, when I sowed seeds, if there was a late frost etc. But I'm just kinda guessing as to what is useful to note!
Planning to do this this year as well.... First time! Lol.... Self Confidence has hindered me from making my 1st RU-vid.... Will be out soon.... This was a good pep talk
@@trishapomeroy9251 SAME! Lol. A lot of varieties I got late in the season so I have no idea how it grows or tastes.... I do have a story abt Purple Cherokee Tomatoes tho.... Lol....
Thank you.. you made me realize that Im not ready to do what I wanted, this year..(Sell starts) Now I know what Im going to start with. Thank you. Im saving this video to come back to. I get so much from your videos. Have a good day. Peace
Oh my gosh I can't even appreciate the greenhouse megastore link nearly enough. I just bought a bunch of stuff off amazon and it wasn't bad quality but it was pretty pricey for what I was getting. The shock when I checked the link and found everything I bought over $10 dollars cheaper per item type for the same amount of stuff I got on amazon.
Here for the good wholesome attitude and learning so much. I see why you and Jess are friends. Im getting married this year and look at yalls marriages for Goodly examples. xoxo SC, USA
I have been doing new things for 2 years now and this will be bigger and even more new things. I have been so excited and yet scared at the same time. I would love to offer starts. I may need to find out if I need a nursery license before I can do that.
This is exciting and encouraging... I accidentally started way too many tomatoes and broccoli for my small garden last year. Offered the extras on Facebook market place and they sold like hotcakes. I definately think I would love to do this more, after I learn how to manage my current responsibilities better. Lol
I am going to host my very first plant sale this year as a yard sale in my front yard. I am so excited! Could you do a more detailed video on what size pots you start different plants in, what size you pot them up to, and how long you grow them before the sale? I know its a lot of work, but it would be helpful!
Thank you for the inspiration. It's nice seeing how much your confidence has grown when watching your older videos. I feel like I'm rocking something now. I have lavender growing way down here for the first time from summer and still going. It took finding out which varieties were good for the area and planting them somewhere were they don't get sun after 11 AM.
Thank you for the video. I can so relate to doubting your product. I did the same thing the first time I sold at the Farmers Market. Great video. Oh, and try adding sand to your soil for your lavender starts. They love well drained soil. 😊
I had a farmer that does alot of variety, but on the outside of each tomato be had a "sales tag" that gives you the geeneral info about the tomato. plus he only sells tomatos and peppers. but alot of variety. having an "wrap sheet" on each variety outside of the booth or something could draw ppl in
Yes last year I grew 500 starter plants and quickly realized I had not taught things through... great advice.. This year maybe 150 plants to sell.. Lesson learned!👍🏼😊
I live in Damascus Ar. neighbor. Thanks for the valuable information and for suggestions to help with being successful. Hope to see you at a farmer's market.
I always find that when I sell my extra plant starts, people always go for what they know. The more unusual varieties sell MUCH less. It’s all about knowing what works in your area. I’ve tried to show people the joy of variety, but they’re all scaredy-cats! 😂
Thank you Jill, this was such a great video and very encouraging. I'm goi g to do starters fro a fund raising in my homeschool community. And growing what you have loved it make sence, so it is what I'm doing with the one variety
This is definitely helpful and encouraging! I'm putting together a plan for the market this year, and it's my first year. I wish I could foresee how people will buy or not buy things that i find special and unique
Hi Jill nice to meet you. I am in an apt still. No dirt to play in yet. I am looking at houses and waiting patiently until I can start my own garden. So I will keep learning for now. Thanks for posting.
Perhaps you could print out a picture and a summary of info about each variety and put it in a frame near that type of plants so they can read about each variety and see what it looks like. I would like that if I were the buyer but that's just me.
I'm absolutely in love with you. You are a pure joy to watch. You're smile is infectious and your knowledge is wonderful. Thank you so much for sharing your life with us.
There's a lot of good advice in this video. I do like growing things that are not the same thing everyone else is growing anyway. And thanks for mentioning black from Tula , it's my favorite dark tomato and I think I'm the only person I know that grows it.
Great video! You have such a sweet personality and Love watching your video's. I found you through Roots and Refuge channel. Maybe I will get to meet you this year at Urban Farm sale. I live in Conway, Ar. Thanks for sharing Jill!
For this year I am going to concentrate on starting seeds for our garden, but next year I would really like to start selling at the market. Here most folks go buy it somewhere else and resell it here. I would like to be the local yocal, lol. Love ya girl. You amaze me. You inspire me. You are awesome.
Great Information! Thank you so much for sharing. Your encouraging words are really nice to hear. I hope to be brave enough to sell some of mine this year.
Jot down what you want to grow but also keep in mind the up potting and light space you will need as they grow! I almost got ahead of myself with my seed starting plan this year!!! I would have had alot of "homeless" plants b4 our first frost date!!!
This is great! We are a new family working on starting our channel. We have been working in a 1,500 sq ft indoor growing space growing cut flowers! We are working on getting outside at the moment. We just started watching the channel. It’s very nice setup.
Perfect timing Jill! We will be selling our first starts soon! We took notes and will definitely check out the links. I LOVE your passions for building community! So many ppl these days just want to stay to themselves and live in a bubble. We believe it's important to help others and accept help when it's offered. This helps build meaningful relationships that LAST and fill our souls! 😍 Thank you for sharing this wonderful video.
Hey Jill, Hello from White Ga. thank you so much❣ you are so helpful. Just watched your Farm House Remodel! Trying to catch up when I can. Love Lovve you guys. Thank you for your encouragement, stay well.
Excellent advice Jill 💕 I have loads of different Lavender’s and they are in full sun and I never water them, they like it tough same with Agapanthus and Lilac’s or the dwarf version Budlia’s they do not like their roots wet 🌸🦋🌸
Just working back through your videos after seeing the Roots and Refuge reveal. So glad to have found you. What excellent quality content :) great info
Ive also been trying lavender for a bit! $40 kits to 25 cent seed packs. I found English lavender and got it to grow late fall zone 5 then had to bring it inside but then I forgot about watering it 😱 argh ! keep trying!! 💚
Isn't a greenhouse the BEST! I go to mine all day on and off. I love listening to my music in there and starting my seedlings. Mine is only a 6x8! But I love that little Case Verde! I'm already trying to figure out how I'm going to add on. LOL
I do not have a farm and may never have one, but love to garden. I thought about doing this as a side income. I have a dream of getting my debit pay off and retiring early. Growing plant starts was a way that I thought that I could get a little more incoming to meet goal and be a help in my retirement. Thank you for the help to get started.
Amazing tips and knowledge! Your encouragement spoke to my heart! I have been dreaming/making lists/praying on selling plant starts this spring, but I REALLY lack confidence and have a hard time with NEW ventures. Thank you for putting this content out here for us!
I have to say, you were inspired to share this now. I am planning on starting extra plants to sell this spring and really had no idea how to get started with selling. Thank you!!!
