This is an excellent review. So helpful to hear you play the side by sides exactly the same using the same mouthpiece. Super informative. Thanks!

Thanks for taking the time for your review. I did hear horrible fuzzy upper stack noise (hissing) coming from the horn at 2:50 Must be the little pip key to improve the intonation. Anybody else hear it? I think Yamaha owns all the patents on body shaping to improve intonation which left Selmer the option of adding a small key to help the upper stack. Selmer is making “Hisstory” with this one!!!

Thank you for this comparison. Very well played and well thought out . For what it is worth, I think the supreme came off significantly better than the series III. I found the tone was warmer and rounder on the supreme, the series III sounded a little thin in comparison. And I thought the intonation was preferable on the supreme. For me these differences were quite striking, and it amazing how subjective these things are as there is not a resounding consensus in the comments. Anyway, thanks and keep up the great work! (and sorry for not prefering your personal set-up)

THANK YOU for this outstanding comparison video! This was exactly what I was hoping to find when I searched up Supreme Classical Review. The two horns are certainly similar, as you mentioned. I heard a very slight reedy edge to the Series III that I didn't hear with the Supreme. Out of the two, my preference was for the Supreme. Ultimately, I'd love to hear the same test with a Mark VI thrown in. Both of the horns in the video are beautiful sounding horns, and your playing does them both justice.

Nice playing and review - but beauty is in the air of the beholder - I do like the sound of the new Horn but the Series III is also a great instrument - no doubt they'll be a "better horn" in the future. Thank you and God bless you - Bill - UK

the response you get on the supreme, i would compare it to my yamaha EX, the balanced tone i hear is something i really like, gotta get my hands on it to give it a good play test, probably the only reason i would want two really good altos!

Excellent review. I closed my eyes half way through the vide and could not tell the difference in the sound between the 2 horns. I think it comes down to which is an easier horn to keep all of the notes int tune. I play a Reference 54 and sometimes think of switching to a series 3 and now possibly the Supreme. I play mostly concert band and quartet music.
@heaneymusic
@heaneymusic 3 года назад
Thank you for listening! Either horn will have better tuning and more even scale than a 54, but the Surpeme will have a tone quality more related with the warmness of the 54 if that’s what you’re after.
@jh9855
@jh9855 3 года назад
Thank you! For sure the Reference 54 has been a difficult horn for me to keep in tune, but a worthy challenge.

I really like the sound of the Supreme. It seems the response seems instantaneous with out much effort. Serie III sounds little more stuffy. Just my opinion. I would love to get my hand on this Selmer Supreme only if I could afford it.

Maybe the results might have been different if the excerpts were done without showing which sax is which, but I really loved your sound with the supreme. For me it sounds a little more full and warm. But nonetheless you still sound great on both saxes!
@heaneymusic

At this point I’m 95% convinced to pick up a Supreme neck for my Series 3… familiar feeling and ergonomics with a slightly warmer and more homogenous tone. I like it a lot.

I agree with Josh, but the both sound great. I have a Selmer Reference 54, and it definitely has a warm sound. I still play my YAS-23, which is still great.

Wow! I can't decide now between the Series II and the Supreme. Which one do you think I should take?
@heaneymusic
@heaneymusic 3 года назад
It depends on your means. I think that the Supreme is a more future-looking horn if you can afford it, while the Series 2 is definitely an affordable classic but has some known intonation and ergonomics quirks on account of the age of its design (over 35 years!)

In terms of aesthetics, the sanagisawa two 32 is by far better and maybe even in everything else like mechanics and fingering etc....by far the best sax I saw...Better than any Selmer, no matter how supreme he may be.

For middle C# correction on Mark 6, just add G finger and octave key.
@heaneymusic
@heaneymusic 3 года назад
Yes, I mentioned this fingering in the video as “French C#”. For what it’s worth, I found that open C# with the C# correction mech on both the Series III and Supreme worked better at raising the pitch than French C# on traditional horns.

@@BillColeExperience Sure thing. The best thing you can do is to get a teacher, because you will learn the best *context* of when to use any particular alternative fingering.
