In this first clip I briefly discussed the study of language with an emphasis on semantics and pragmatics. This is supposed to help students see where semantics and pragmatics are located in linguistics. Feel free to give comments and suggestions.

This is the first video I have found with such a clear, concise explanation of the difference between semantics and pragmatics. Also, your example of the different uses for, "Is John there?" is crystal clear and well-chosen. Thank you! This type of distinction is so important for ELL students to understand.

pragmatics is the meaning that is inside the speaker's mind for examle a mother says to her daughter '' it is raining now '' this sentence lexically is informative but the mother may mean '' take your umbrella when you leave

Sorry for my late reply. The sentence I bought her a flower. has both semantic and pragmatic meaning. The semantic meaning is derived from the meaning of words in the sentence and the way they are structured. The pragmatic meaning has to do with the speakers' meaning in addition to the semantic one. I hope this somehow answer your question.
