Samuel McCormick, Ph.D., is an award-winning teacher and scholar. He lectures widely on Lacanian psychoanalysis, is Professor of Communication Studies at San Francisco State University, and was recently appointed EURIAS & Marie-Curie Research Fellow at Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies in Denmark.

Dear Sam how could we divide the subject to an enunciating and a grammatical one? Language cannot exist outside our bio-animalistic part. It is because we breathe and have vocal cords that we speak. It is because we have hands we write. Isn't language an enunciation?

If my enunciating self is my living, corporal body, and my grammatical self is its representation in various signifying systems (e.g., documents, records, emails, YT comments, and the like), we can begin to see how the two are interrelated yet also distinct, and even capable of existing apart from each other. I could die in a knife fight after posting this comment, for instance, but the comment, and with it my grammatical self, would live on…
