Most of the time, the Coast Guard does not get as much notoriety as the other branches do. However, a few things to take note of. The United States Coast Guard was the first military service in human history formed with the primary mission of saving lives. To selflessly risk their own lives in the saving of others. Also, to anyone who has been unfortunate enough to find themselves clinging to life in the frigid and stormy waters, of any ocean, the most beautiful sight in this world is the arrival of one of those orange and white helicopters overhead, or a Coast Guard cutter, coming fearlessly to their rescue; no matter how bad the sea and weather conditions!
I am a proud former PS2 in the USCGR from 1978-1987. My dad was a Coxswain in the Coast Guard Auxiliary 1942-1945. It later became the Reserves and a new Auxiliary was formed after WW2. My grandfather was a US Lighthouse keeper at several lights mostly in Virginia. That was circa 1898-1911. I know he was in by 1898 because he was transferred to the Navy and helped man a ship that was part of Admiral Dewey’s fleet sent to Cuba during the Spanish American war. It was part of the fleet that kept the Spanish fleet bottled up in the Havana Harbor. His medal hung on my aunts wall until her death. The lens and light of the Hog Island light is displayed in the lobby of the Mariner’s Museum in Newport News, VA. He was the 1st Assistant Keeper there. The museum allowed me to climb up its steps where he once stood. I’m proud of my family’s service in the Coast Guard in both war and peace. To me, our song really strikes home. When I joined in 1978 there was still a lot of anti military sentiment post Vietnam. However, finding I was in the Coast Guard, I did not catch much grief. I know that over half of the world’s Coast Guards now use a version of our “racing stripe”. It has been said the greatest form of flattery is being copied.
I am a uscg auxilarist and even though I am a civilian I am so proud to serve my state and country within the coast guard, so don't let anyone tell you that the coast guard isn't really military because it is!!! Semper paratus!!! 😊
Full versions of the branch songs slap MUCH harder than the versions commonly played during patriotic holidays. But I have to say, I think this might tie for first place with the Marines for best lyrics.
Ben, I think you're right, but as much as I love the MARINES and their Hymn, I fear that the Coasties and "SEMPER PARATUS" have won my heart. In WWII, everywhere you found Americans in boats headed for a hostile beach there were Coast Guardsmen driving those boats and fighting and dying right along with the MARINES and Army. Or escorting convoys on the Atlantic and Pacific. Now we find them busting druggies at sea and protecting lives on our coasts in unbelievably hard conditions. I've always said that Coasties have to be a little cracked in the head, but thank God for them and their white and orange boats!!

I spent a year on jail because they tortured me like they dont have body cameras. So glad this guy in the car videos it.
