I swore after the way the Republicans railroaded Clinton, that I'd never vote Republican. Then, I watched the Obama years and after that the way the Democrats treated Trump, and I had to change my mind again. 3 things that a political party committed to democracy has to follow (according to Levitsky and Ziblatt): 1) Accept elections, win or lose. 2) Never use violence to gain or to hold onto power. 3) Last but most important is you have to distant yourself from political actors who engage in those first two behaviors. -And increasingly we have the GOP violating all 3 and this is a great threat to democracy. -And we have mainstream GOP political leaders who are not condemning those behaviors by staying silent or go along with it are enablers that ultimately get us into trouble by undermining democracy. And it’s not easy to call out those bad actors when they are within your party. But they must draw the line and stand up for democracy or we’re all in trouble. -They went on to say that from history of democratic breakdown happen when those enablers don’t denounce is when democracy is at it’s greatest threat. -And I think the most important take away is that dictators alone can’t do it by themselves. It’s the enablers that allow them to. And this is what we’re seeing today with Mitch McConnell, Kevin McCarthy, Lindsay Graham and the likes from the GOP!
