White collar crime should be punishable just as any other type of crime. It does not matter if somebody is selling dope in a corner or some executive decides to bet on upside down mortgages with federal money. Both are crimes, instead white collar crimes are ignored and or not punished as severely. Specially when these criminals hire only the best lawyers.
White collar crime is a big deal, a very big deal. Lori Laughlin will be serving time (white collar crime.) The reason why we (as a society) do not take it as serious, is because white collar criminals are not generally "violent." They are dangerous, but not life-and-death dangerous the way a murderer, a drug dealer, or a DUI driver is. Fraud is a very big deal. Whether it is Enron, or Bernie Madoff, or Lori Laughlin, or this jamoke at Wells Fargo, its a big deal. Its big deal because when you commit fraud you erode the public trust in institutions who are supposed to act in the best interest of their customers. Do that (and don't get punished) and we cease living in the 1st world and we start to live in the 3rd world. No one wants to live in the 3rd world. No one wants to live with a corrupt government, with corrupt business practices. The law applies to all people equally. But in matters of white collar crime (because we don't hear as much about it) we don't fully understand what the law is that is being broken, what the crime is. So its hard for unsophisticated people to wrap their hands around it. Like in 2008, only one banker went to jail. That is because for all the trillions lost, no real "crimes" were committed because that level of Fraud, our government could never properly understand exactly what kind of legislation needed to be created to prevent it in the future. And they still don't.
it ABSOLUTELY should be. The only way to deter these roaches from preying on the poor and exploiting every loophole they come across, is to prosecute executives for mismanagement during their tenure. The SEC has shown itself unwilling/unable to provide oversight so Congress needs to do something to reign these guys in before they create another "Great Recession". For all of their condemnation, this is one area Democrats have completely dropped the ball. I'll never forgive Obama for not finding a way to hold those responsible for 2008 criminally liable. There's literally nothing so terrible that they can't get away with.

I worked at a bank for over 3 years as a teller/member services rep. I can attest the sales pressures they put on you are astronomical, you constantly fear if you don't sell credit cards, higher loan amounts, etc. that you will lose your job, I have seen it happen to multiple co-workers...
