Good review very thorough. Wife and I have the Sena R1. Made the e-bike ride so much more enjoyable. Most important we don't have to jockey to ride parallel when we need to have a conversation, thus safer.

Great review! I am severely hearing impaired and a bilateral BAHA wearer. I cannot wear them when wearing a helmet, and so cannot hear most sounds (cars) until they are right on top of me. We purchased these so that I could hear any needed warnings from my husband (and give them to him, as I actually watch my surroundings more than he does), and hear my fitness tracking app, as well as be able to communicate via phone, if need be. We just received yesterday and have not finished sitting them up, but I tried it last night with a phone call and I could hear it pretty clearly! My volume is turned all the way up and my hearing loss is mostly conduction loss, so sound goes through the scull, from the speakers. I wanted to put this out there if more of your subscribers have hearing loss.

They also make a Sena Pi, which we also have. The sound isn’t as good but serves its purpose. You can use it with any helmet. We’ve been using Lazer z1 helmet with MIPS alongside the Pi.

Good review, i'm looking at picking one up. I remember the Sena name from my motorcycling days. About the price, I'm actually surprised that it doesn't cost more. Many higher end regular bicycle helmets can easily cost the same price but without all the blutooth stuff.

I think the higher priced helmets have MIPS which is extra protection to your head. There’s a new iteration of Sena helmets with flashing light at the back! We only use these helmets- excellent way to communicate safely!

Great review. My wife and I bought ebikes last year and really enjoy them except for the difficulty in communicating. I like to zoom ahead and my wife is more of a "take it slow" rider. When we are close I'm always in front and have to turn slightly to yell back for her to hear me! Not the best situation because I have a deep, resonating voice so I'm sure everyone in the area can also hear me and I find when I turn my head slightly sometimes I swerve a little. No accidents yet but our new Sena R1s should help cure that (fingers crossed). Heading to border to cross from Canada into USA to pick ours up at our Mail box facility.

Very helpful review. I have been looking at the Sena helmets and am trying to see if they are a justified purchase. I have some friends I occasionally ride with who have these and use them to communicate. I feel I might benefit by being a part of the conversation. Beyond that, when I ride alone, I thought the music aspect would be nice. However, I appreciate your comment that the sound (bass) is not so great.

We just got two for our new ebikes. I have a very large head. For guys who have a large hat size get the large. Fits like a glove.

I have a question about the intercom. I heard you say that you need to pick either the audio or intercom. Does that then mean that if you're listening to an audiobook and your riding partner(s) are trying to contact you via intercom they won't get through until they can visually catch your attention so you can switch to intercom mode?

Hi! Yes unfortunately if you’re listening to music or an audio book and your friends want to intercom with you I don’t think there’s a way to tell whether they’re communicating with you while you’re in that setting. Frankly, I’ve never tried it! I’ll get back to you on this one once I test it.

Thank you, exceptional review indeed. Just a question: This is the Sena R1 (159€ and I see there is also the Sena R1 EVO 199€ in European Amazon. The difference is in back light or you have any idea?

Can you connect with other series of Sena helmets? or do the helmets all have to be the same series?

I'm not sure. I'm assuming you can since they use the same technology, but it's no more than 4 helmet at a time can connect to it. The R1 Evo has a Mesh intercom, which I'm not sure how that works yet.

Just be careful when buying these helmets. I bought two Brand New Sena R1 EVO helmets recently for my wife and I and the menu isn't the same on them. I also don't have FM Radio and I can't take calls. The voice command feature doesn't work either. I can connect and talk with my wife while riding but that's the only thing that works. When I reached out to their support personnel, I got a generic response with a copy of the pictures from the manual telling me how to use those features. When I told them, I don't have those features in the menu on either helmet, I got silence from them.

Hello to you ALL. HAPPY NEW YEAR 2021! NICE review. In the first quarter of 2021 the new Sena M1 and M1 EVO (MTB) will be coming out. Unfortunately, according to the Tech Specialist I just talked to, it will also not have an insect protection built-in. Anyone has an idea how to solve not getting bit (again) by insects? THX :-)

Hi Bob! I would suggest charging it. We always charge ours after every use just to be on the safe side.

"intercom failed. Try again later." Repeatedly occurring when trying to get to work. Sena is helping by email but still not working

Hi Teri. Start with one helmet. Hold the middle and plus button until you hear the voice say “intercom pairing”. Once you hear that then you take the second helmet and press the middle button only. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!
