Senegal is a West African country located in the Westernmost part of the African continent's mainland. the country is bordered by five countries namely; Mauritania, Mali, Guinea & Guinea Bisau, and Gambia. The country has an estimated population of 17 million people and its capital city is Dakar. In this video, we explore and discover Senegal. We look at the country's History, the People & culture and the country's economy.
DISCOVER AND EXPLORE SENEGAL
HISTORY
The name Senegal appears to be derived from that of the Zenaga Berbers of Mauritania and northern Senegal. Between the 10th and 12th century the legendary leader Njajan Njay founded the Jolof kingdom, which in the 16th century split into the competing Wolof states of Walo, Kajor, Baol, Sine, and Salum. Portuguese navigators reached Cape Verde about 1444; they established trading factories at the mouth of the Sénégal, on Gorée Island, at Rufisque, and along the coast to the south. In the 17th century their power was superseded by that of the Dutch and then the French. Other major towns of operation included; Saint Louis, Dakar and Rufique. Later, the locals noticed the injustices the were going through and this energized them to fight for their freedom and this enabled them get their independence in 1958 from the French.
PEOPLE AND CULTURE
Senegal is a country with abundant culture. The country has a population of 17 million people and its culture is preserved through oral traditions. The old men sit down the young generations to pass down the important information to these youngones. Much of the Senegalese culture is presrved through Music (Singing and dancing). The Senegalese staple foods are millet, rice, peanut, fresh seafood and many others.
Senegal is country with diverse culture and the largest tribal formation are the Wolof - 43%, Fula - 24%, Serer - 15%, Jola, Mandika, Soninke and others.
The country is predorminantly and Muslim country with muslims - 90%, christians - 5%, others - 5%.
ECONOMY
Traditionally, the Senegalese economy was built around a single cash crop and that's the peanut. However the government is trying to diversify with other cash crops such as cotton and sugarcane. The country also depends on its fishing industry. Since the beginning of the 21st century, they've also engaged in the mining of phosphates, Gold. Tourism is also another industry that they've dived into and it's paying off wholesomely.
Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cape Verde, Cabo Verde, Cameroon, Central African Republic (CAR), Chad, Comoros, The Democratic Republic of the Congo, Republic of the Congo, Cote d'Ivoire, Djibouti, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Eswatini (formerly Swaziland), Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leon, Mogadishu Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Addis Ababa, Gambia, The Gambia, East African Federation, Addis Abeba, Addis Ababa city, Ethiopia Addis Ababa, South Sudan, African girl, Senegal, Gambia country, Uganda capital city, African language, Africa, Kampala, African Cup of Nations 2021, How to speak africa language, Kigali city, Seychelles.
