Respect would come from all citizens (minus the true criminals), in general, if they saw consistent respect from police officers. The problem is, many police officers show little to no respect for private citizens' rights on a daily basis. It's not like disrespect only comes out in the form of curse words. It also comes out in the form of demanding I.D. from people who are not even reasonably suspected of committing a crime, and in the form of demanding people "step back" when all they have is a camera to film and hold those cops accountable for their actions. The disrespect from cops is shown in thousands of videos on RU-vid! One 1st Amendment auditor was coming up to a crime scene, staying behind the tape the whole time but when a cop spotted the 1st Amendment auditor, the cop demanded the one filming to get back further, but the 1st Amendment auditor knew he could stay where he was legally, behind the tape, so when the cops' ego was bruised for the one filming not listening to the officers' unlawful demand, the officer moved the tape further back. Such disrespect shown in just one video, these cops have too much ego. It makes sense, you'd think people with egos would want a job that is set up to give these people power that few others have in society. So the bait of police officer position is set up nicely for those with big egos. They keep going in and many police officers do not even know the laws they're supposed to be upholding! They'll say "I can't know every statute in my head!" yet they ignore the fact that we live in the 21st century, you can simply get a tablet or phone to google search the .gov websites for the specific laws he's trying to uphold at the moment. They're willfully ignorant because they don't genuinely care about upholding actual law or respecting our rights. They're interested in boosting their ego by pushing people around who are afraid of the government system that'll almost always blindly take the side of the police officers' word over the private citizens' word, so the citizen caves in to obeying the bully cops' demands, unless they have a camera that is! Cameras are changing everything, but hopefully cameras live streaming! You know, corrupt cops love breaking phones to destroy the evidence, then claim this happened in the struggle after the citizen "resisted arrest" and such... /wink /wink
Somebody let the puppy cop off leash that day. Usually they have to be trained for a year or two by a big dog and then they can be released into society or they are told this job ain't for you. I think some retraining is in order here so Nick won't have to do it alone.

African Americans arent the only ones that have their rights violated. We are all one as citizens and community. It's old and outdated culture of police misconduct. Not to mention officers who have personal issues of their own. They are, after all, only average or below average humans. Why would an exceptional person become a cop? They don't, and exceptional people have more important shit to do. The slogan, "To Protect And Serve" is not what's on officer's minds when they suit up for work each day.
I actually think it's the reverse to some extent. Older Officers and law enforcement officials obviously have the experience, but they also share and carry with them this outdated form of policing. Think about how many how body cams make a difference now a days, this is a 21st century implementation to policing. Think about the current demographics of individuals in policing, much more people of color in the force than white people who don't understand what it's like to be brown or black in America. Though older individuals bring the poise and general experience of the job itself, police interactions now are vastly different than say 15-20 years ago

You absolutely nailed why I decided against becoming a cop. Half way into my Constitutional Law class in college, I realized that I would not be able to violate someones rights or follow an order to do so. After I graduated, I became a rock/metal band promoter instead. lol
