Here is a list of some really great headphone options. HD800S included! geni.us/thebestheadphones
@ExacoMvm
@ExacoMvm 5 лет назад
Well this list has some good options, but there's alot lacking.. e.g. Where's the HE 4XX ( aka 400i ), the HD 6XX ( aka HD 650 ) that goes for 200$ and below and has sound of 500$ ones. Apple Airpods is good budget option, sounds like 2 times worse than HD 598 which is surprising from 10$ inears.

The problem with this review is that you have no frame of reference for other top of the line headphones and thus its difficult to really pin down how good these headphones really are. I mean you are coming from air pods. Next consider listening to a few TOTLs then you have a good frame of reference.

I have them and your explanation of what they add in comparison to already good headphones (like $200-300 ones) is quite well said. For me one of the if not THE most important feature they add is that huge dynamic range (silent sound vs loud sound in the same song). If you want to hear what I mean: Listen to the "Save Theme" from the game "Resident Evil 1 Remaster" and you'll notice that the gaps are much quieter. Other features: - great realistic voices - great 3D locating in games I'm powering them with a Shiit Magni (€125).

Hi Matt, if I was in the market for the best of the best, then ya, I would DEF pony up the cash for these cans. But they're outta my snack bracket. Plus I already have 3 sets of cans from Sennheiser; 1. Sennheiser Momentums [for when I want quality audio in a compact form factor] 2. GSP500's [ I'm a gamer and sound and mic quality in game is paramount for me ! ] 3. Mass Senns HD6xx [ this is as close as I get to putting down serious cash for sound ] And as you can see Matt, even the retail of these 3 added up still don't come close to the HD800's. Thanks for your review of these Rolls Royce of cans man !

endgame is a myth
@dnd6379
@dnd6379 5 лет назад
@@oranges3482 Not really, I think the highest quality begins at around 150 maybe 300 and up and then it is just sidegrading or going by preference. For example HD 500 line (not 580 or 58x) from Sennheiser is not end game (I mean it can be whatever you want it to be of course, but we are talking objectively here) because it simply doesn't have the detail and sound of a end game or high end headphone, 600 line is end game because anything more expensive just sounds different and may sound better to you but at that point it is only preference.
@oranges3482
@oranges3482 5 лет назад
@@dnd6379 exactly, beyond a certain point there are just headphones that sound different. in some songs, genres or even just days you might want a bassy headphone, sometimes you might want a more detailed headphone, and another time you might just want a balanced headphone. now one headphone can't have 3 different sound signatures making a "end game headphone" non existent. (I probably exaplained this really bad, watch joshua valour's video about it)
@dnd6379
@dnd6379 5 лет назад
@@oranges3482 Yea true, but end game doesn't necessarily mean that the headphones can do everything, it might just mean that it's the "best" at doing a specific thing. For me end game is the 600 line and the things similar to them in terms of quality of audio. But I am thinking of getting more headphones (currently own 650) like K712, ad1/200x, adx5000 and a few others.
@oranges3482
@oranges3482 5 лет назад

@gwynbleiddroach2589
@gwynbleiddroach2589 6 лет назад
Umm, haha no if you are in the market for an hd800s do yourself a favor and get them. They are better than the 650 by far in my opinion. Now ofcourse souns quality is subjective, but chances are if you are looking for the most accurate representation, largest soundstage and subjectively the best sound you are going to get with senn, then get the hd800s. If you have the money, they are well worth the extra cost compared to the 650.
@user-vi3tb3bw5t
@user-vi3tb3bw5t 6 лет назад
joshua smith that's just as you said, your opinion... You hook up either to a really good system and you are gonna get world class sound.. 800s are gonna be better in resolution and clarity but not by THAT much. owning both I personally prefer the 650 for listening to most music and games, because they have more emphasis on the low end and are very warm and cozy. The 800s I prefer for analyzing and mixing. 650 are like 90% as quality as the 800 but with a bit more low end and a veiled high end. 800s are marginally better....You really gonna recommend someone who says they are new to audiophile world sennheisers top end headphone which you basically need to spend thousands on a system to reach its potential? Really dude? Hd 650s are such a fucking steal under 400..hell they are a steal at 500. It's the PERFECT entry audiophile headphone... And to get anything marginally better you gotta spend at least twice as much. One thing about the 650s is there isnt a particular category they excel in but they do everything really well. Don't underestimate the 650s.
@dnd6379
@dnd6379 5 лет назад
@@user-vi3tb3bw5t I would actually recommend gear that is 150 or around that so you know what "entry level" is and then go up, because someone buying HD 650 still won't know what to look for in the music and won't know what to appreciate that wasn't in a pair of headphones that he owned before these ones. 650 are pretty much end game, anything else is just a sidegrade but you might prefer that sidegrade over 650 which is normal, depends on what you want in headphones.

They're definitely worth the price. Speaking in terms of classical and jazz listening which is what I use them for. I'm sure other genres would sound amazing as well. I don't know what silly comparative measurement I'd use between these and hd600, but they're not in the same class. Hd600 is great listening, but hd820S is magical. Sounds so nice on ak1000 dap without need of separate amp, but on more powerful headphone amp (I use MA9000) it goes from magical to stunning. I'm not actually sure if the difference is the McIntosh's dac or headphone amp power, but these are for me so worth the price. I want for nothing when i'm listening to these!

As an audiophile/hifi enthusiast or whatever you want to call it, I think that top of the the line headphones are absolutely NOT worth it for 99% of people. It takes a trained ear to really appreciate the difference between some of the great mid-fi can out there right now (sennheiser HD-58X, Hifiman HE-4xx, Sennheiser HD-6xx, Monoprice M1060) and $1000+ headphones. I recently purchased a pair of Focal Clear Pros ($1600) and the difference between them an the HE-4xx ($170) is very subtle at first. It's taken me a week to really appreciate the difference, and it's not even better 100% of the time (like Bass slam) There's no doubt it's a more refined product, but would you rather have the 4xx and 10 years of Tidal Streaming or one pair of Focal Clears? Buy a great $200 headphone like the ones above and a JDS Labs Atom Amp with a Topping D10 DAC and use that until something breaks.

Their flagship from the mid '80's the HD540 surpass the HD800's in almost all ways - you can find them on ebay from $60 - $150. Technically the 800's are ok but no music sounds like how they present it, in real life. Since the early 1990's all the big companies have been going down hill. They peaked in mid 1980. and $1500?? - What a con - $4-500, maybe. With respect - "if you really care about headphones" you wouldn't buy these. To try an analogy - They sound like an over privileged hyper intelligent ignorant kid - sure they know a lot of things BUT they have no actual life experience to offer or any kind of maturity to speak off. Its not that they are intentionally a bad person - All the facts they can throw at you can be interesting but only for a while - I felt the 800's to a headphone that was constantly showing off - almost like every frequency they were saying 'can you hear this, did you hear that....over and over again. As i say, technically they seem good but life isn't a technical fact it is a rich involving peaceful organic thing...which these headphones, sadly are not...Oh and now Sennheiser puts a bit of plastic over the grill and announced their 'new' closed back headphone for $3,400 . What a joke

I mean it's nice that you got the headphones for a review, but from what I can see is that you know next to nothing about headphones or to put it more nicely, very little. They are good.... of course they are for that price, they have to be, but what do they compare to that they are better and therefore a "better" option for people to buy. It seems like a lot of people who bought (not counting you of course) HD800/s know nothing about headphones and just bought what the mainstream shows is best (unbox therapy, who also doesn't know much about headphones because he simply doesn't care as much as he does about phones and all the rest of youtubers and twitchers who have HD 800/s are the same, maybe there is one who knows but never seen a person who knows why he bought HD800 except that these are "the best" headphones, if these cost 500 bucks I bet most people wouldn't own them, people buy these because they are over a grand, talking about people who don't know much about headphones). Cool video I guess, but brings absolutely no information.

Not worth it at all if there are headphones like the AKG 712 Pro that have the exactly same sound signature, details and resolution with the added extra bass dept that the HD800s is lacking. I have listened to both for hours with several amplifiers in a shop in Japan and the AKG 712 pro are just better in every way and they cost a fraction of the price.
