NPC April Day 27: Senokir, the strange fire genasi the party meets in the City of Brass. Please tag spoilers in your comments! All clips belong to Critical Role: / @criticalrole
The 27 minutes is, in my opinion anyway, probably the 3 most heartbreaking words to ever be spoken by one of Matt's NPCs. They've been in dramatic scenes, NPCs have seen family and loved ones die in front of them, Gilmore coming to terms with the death of Vax, tragic things. But with Senokir, they wandered into the life of a thoroughly broken man just walking through life like a shadow, doubted and judged him endlessly, and in the end all he wanted was to entrust them with the ashes of a woman he loved so deeply that even after years, he still keenly feels her loss every waking minute, like a limb that was amputated hours before. Matt has portrayed most or all human emotions in these games, and denizens of the outer planes are unrelatable, inhuman beings by their nature, but Senokir is an unrelatable, incomprehensible character forever trapped in the most human moment anyone can ever experience. He isn't consumed by it, he keeps going, but he's defined by it and he'll likely feel it until his final breath, and that's somehow even more tragic
NPC character writing at it's finest. Senokir has a quirk, a profession, a want, and a fear. The rest is just Matthew and everyone enjoying this guy who is "strange...in the most wonderful way".
@@TheUCuber Don't quote me on it, but he seemed to be pretty fearful of a few things. Dealing with the Fire Giants and his freed status being revoked were some legitimate fears. I also read somewhere that the City of Brass had a pretty extreme curfew that would warrant fear.
@@georgeweasley54 correct. Entire character up on the spot and then he nosedove into the traits of him that the players.responded to. The prolonged eye contact and strange voice. They were so SURE he was conspiring against them
If I recall, this was improv. Matt said something about quickly trying to consider what kind of being they could interact with as an ally and he hadn't planned any of it
@@Aloysius_OHare Viktor and Sinokir are proof that matt is GOAT....both are completely different and the way he makes you feel and see exactly what is happening is amazing..my 2 favourite NPCs in ALL of campaign 1... I havent watched c2 yet but since its ony 20 years after c1, im hoping to see either one of them...(TBH viktor probably blew himself up lol)
@@lostandleftbehindyou don't, sorry. C2 is in a different continent, so no chances for reoccurring NPCs really. They have some great ones, though, like Pumat Sol.
8:23 is one of my favorite moments in all of Campaign 1- the whole party was so on edge for the entire episode, getting more and more unsettled with everything Senokir says and does, then he laughs at Twinny shenanigans and everyone just breaks
