Welcome to Sensible Secondhand Classics, the series where we take a sensible classic car worth between £1000 and £5000 and put it through its paces in a very straightforward manner! This time, as we drive a 1983 Vauxhall Cavalier Mark II 1600 L Automatic (otherwise known as an Opel Ascona A, part of General Motors' 1980s J-Car range), we try to avoid unintended acceleration, successfully dodge flooding, have terrible sound (as usual), notice a very high boot lip, awkwardly operate a manual choke and generally experience little of any consequence at all. Nothing untoward then!

Nice video which brings me back to my childhood. Of course we had no Vauxhalls in Russia, but the Ascona - oh, those cars were every where, mostly 4 door sedans. Hatchback seemed to be not very practical to many of the buyers. As for "Hot" versions - well, the Ascona Irmscher was (and still is) a dream car. As for other J-cars - those were mostly from Japan (Isuzu Aska - very popular car in Vladivostok and other Far Eastern cities) and USA (Chevrolet Cavalier and Pontiac Sunbird - mostly coupes with turbo4 or V6). Not that exciting, still cheap to run and maintain. BTW, Moscow Road Police used a fleet of 1996 2nd gen US Cavaliers. Those proved to be pretty longlasting.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting Год назад
I am sure that absolutely tonnes of these must have been imported secondhand into Russia in the 1990s! Never seen an Ascona Irmscher, is that similar to the Cavalier Calibre? The Isuzu Aska being popular in the east sounds interesting...
@runoflife87
@runoflife87 Год назад
@@lloydvehicleconsulting yes, the Ascona Irmscher is pretty similar to the Cavalier Calibre (a bit more powerful though). I think some people also imported Aska Irmscher, but those cars were very rare even in 90's Japan and seem to be a collectible item (unlike regular Aska which earned the reputation of a "not pure Japanese car").

My teacher at school had one almost identical to this. I think it was manual in that orangey terra cotta colour that was common on this era of Vauxhalls . I liked all marks of Cavalier. My dad was never too keen on them for some reason. He liked the Carlton, Royale and Senator but not the Cavalier. Might have been something to do with the 'repmobile' image.

My mates dad had a saloon 1.6 in that colour. We had many 'performance tests' when we were 18 against that and my dad's montego 1.6. the montego was always that wee bit quicker as the 4 speed cavalier had crazy long gears compared to the 5 speed montego.
@lloydvehicleconsulting

I think that’s an aftermarket sunroof. The factory ‘roof would be tilt and slide and was controlled by a white winding lever at the front behind the windscreen. That looks like a generic tilt or remove panel. Bonus points as well sir for name-checking the Cadillac Cimmaron: probably one of the most cynical pieces of badge engineering in automotive history.

Yes, the attrition rate for the Mark II Cavalier is appalling, as they were one of the most disposable cars out there for years, being low in value, very common and not particularly rust resistant. This one is perfect, though! Thank you for watching, my friend.
@owensteele1645
@owensteele1645 Год назад
Thanks for this video, it's great to see one of these in action again after so long. There was also a very rare 2-door saloon in 1.3 Base trim I think, for the first 2 years. Anyway, that's a really nice early one, and the automatics had good performance. I think at this point, the 90bhp 1.6 was the most powerful mk2 Cavalier engine (the range-topping 1.6 SR also used it). The second car I ever bought was a facelift 1.6L 5-speed hatch in a rare metallic colour called Orient Blue, and I liked mine very much. D318RNM I think it was. Though it was a final-facelift one, it did not have much more in the way of equipment (5-speed, wind-up sunroof, full wheel trims and that was about it). But it did end up LOOKING very different with its mk2 Astra instruments and steering wheel, plusher grey velour seats similar to an earlier CD model, front valance and grille, and darker rear lights.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting Год назад
That's right, the 1.8 only appeared in 1983. The two door saloons are exceptionally rare, I have never seen one. They were much more popular on the Continent, I think the Ascona had that body style until the end, as far as I remember. The 1.6 is remarkably swift, this car really did not hang around. Would quite like to try a later manual car now.
@owensteele1645

I've just remembered now, that while I loved the 1.6L I actually owned, the one I REALLY wanted was an end-of-line 1.8 LXi hatch, but, in 1993, my budget couldn't quite stretch to one. I recall that being a very nice-looking edition at that time.

Yes, the automatic models have a slightly strange pedal arrangement which is potentially a bit dangerous, the manual ones would be better. Great review. I remember being given a lift in a new 1981 Cavalier 1.6 and being impressed by the crispness of the power delivery. A very kind car hire guy rescued me and towed my Rover P5B 3.5 Coupe a mile to a repair garage when the auto gearbox failed. You wouldn't get that sort of friendly assistance these days. Mr Lloyd, I had a 1600 GL automatic in gold; ELE 976Y. Unfortunately I was young and green and bought it at an auction in 1993 without knowing what I was doing. It had so many problems with the engine, transmission and brakes. I ran into the back of two cars as it would not stop properly, and had the transmission rebuilt but it failed again on the Earls Court Road. Luckily it would still drive when cold so I put it through Wandsworth Car Auctions and got £1000 for it which paid for the deposit on my flat. Bad memories but nice to see a good one!

Sold in South America as the Chevrolet Monza where it became the best selling car in Brazil from 1984 to 1986.

@@lloydvehicleconsulting Depending of the trim, air-conditioning and power steering was either an optional or standard in the Chevrolet Monza. The Europeans never had the choice of AC in the Ascona or the Cavalier. Power steering was only standard in the Ascona or Cavalier CD, which ironically didn't come with a CD player despite the name. CD is supposed to mean "Comfort Diamond"... Whatever that means. In South America the most luxurious Monza was called Classic SE and in 1990 Chevrolet made a limited edition called Classic SE 500 E.F as a homage to Emerson Fittipaldi's victory at that year's Indianapolis 500 race. It differed from the rest of the range for raving a lip rear spoiler, loaded with every single equipment (except a sunroof, which was never offered in South America apparently), leather seats and an electronic injected multi-port two-litre engine with 116 bhp and 175 Nm of torque. Same engine that powered the Mk3 Cavalier (Opel Vectra A). Despite all the luxury, it was only available with a 5-speed manual gearbox.

@@CynicalBastard511 , it's amazing that these Mark II Cavaliers (and the Mark I Astra I drove in 2021) don't really seem to need power steering, they are quite light as they are, which is more than can be said for cars like the 1.6 Maestros, the Mark II Polos and the MG Metros, all of which I have driven on the channel as well. The Cavalier CD does seem like a very nice specification.

@@lloydvehicleconsulting That's because they have 13-inch steel rims wrapped in 165/80SR13 tyres. The CD had BBS style 13-inch alloys with 185/70R13 tyres and PAS as standard. Ask Vauxhall if they can lend you one. They've got one in their heritage collection.
