Welcome to Sensible Secondhand Reviews, the series where we take a sensible secondhand car worth between £1000 and £5000 and put it through its paces in a very straightforward manner! This time we have a 2016 DS3 1.2 Puretech Chic (also known as a Citroen DS3) which hides a slightly embarrassing secret. Be prepared for a failed attempts not to discuss the Prince engine (as usual), a wobbly camera mount (as usual), lots of wind noise (no surprise there), acceleration up a bypass (again), quite a lot of missing equipment on this "Chic" model and very little of any consequence at all. Nothing untoward, then!

An excellent review Joseph. You hit the nail on the head with your comments about the cabin quality. I think Citroen build quality has really improved over the last few years and no longer do you get the old problems with pieces of trim and door handles breaking as they used to.
@markonmotoring
@markonmotoring 2 года назад
I never had any trim quality issues in my 2013 model. Some of the switchgear did look a bit PSA carried over but non of it was of poor quality so I saw no issue with that.

Yes, this was a much better quality car than, say, the Mark I C3, and shares no engineering with it whatsoever as far as I know. It was impressive for PSA at the time, I am sure, the 207 really isn't good in this regard. Thank you again for watching, sir!

I wish we got vehicles like this in the United States. They would make wonderful second or third cars for city or suburban use. Probably not so good for Interstate travel loaded with a family and their vacation luggage.
@lloydvehicleconsulting

Oh yes, I once drove with five people in one of these, and it was pretty bad. The boot is also not massive, but if you just do local journeys with one or two people, then it is not too bad. You probably need one which has slightly higher specification to be able to park properly, though, as the rear visibility is a bit poor. Thank you for watching, sir!

What an unexpected review, Joseph! Thank you for having done it! I love this car, as much as I dislike the DS brand, or at least, the representation of it in Colombia! A friend owned the 1.6T (which I believe had the extra gear) for the better part of a year, and then, while he was traveling, the turbo died out. Now, being in Colombia, a lot of "Citroen" mechanics didn't even know what to do with the car, so they ended up damaging the turbo further, and when he came back to Bogotá, I accompanied him to the nearest DS dealership, where they didn't even try to fix it! Had to sell the car, and get himself into a Fiesta, which according to him, is less fun than the DS3. You are right about the car feeling a bit dark; night drives were incredibly awesome, but during the day, the black leather upholstery, and the dark and crammed interior became a nightmare.

Thank you very much indeed, sir! I was offered this car at very short notice, hence why I got the engine output wrong (twice) but I am glad that I did it. The DS Automobiles brand is almost non-existent in many countries, and a bit rubbish with service sometimes, from what I understand. The 1.6 Prince engine is notorious for failures such as the one you describe, hence why we don't talk about it on this channel.... It was very dark in there, which isn't great for filming, either! Glad you enjoyed the video.

Another great review as always Sir, always liked these I would say for the younger generation this would be the successor to the Saxo .
@markonmotoring
@markonmotoring 2 года назад
I've never driven a Saxo but from what I've heard they probably felt more chuckable. The DS I had felt pretty refined though.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 2 года назад
The Saxo is a very, very different type of car. The one I passed my test in didn't even have power steering! The DS3 from the outset was designed to be a "premium" car above the C3, so they aren't quite direct equivalents, but certainly zippy little cars from PSA go back a very long way.

I had a brand new DS3 Dsport+ back in 2013. It was a pretty high spec car with leather upholstery, climate control and upgraded audio system etc .. It looked the part in silver with black roof and Balbone black/diamond cut alloys, twin exhaust and carbon fibre dash. The bad points- 17" wheels with low profile tyres meant the car never handled all that well and on poor road surface it would tram line. Good points- Reasonable comfortable cruiser. Well equipped. Six speed gearbox. The 155hp petrol engine had plenty of low end torque yet would rev to 7000rpm. In conclusion the thing I liked best about the DS3 was the one petrol engine we don't talk about here. 😓 There was setting about the DS3 though. It isn't as sharp to drive as say a Ford Fiesta, but it certainly felt classier.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 2 года назад
We had better not mention the Prince engine. Bad things happen if people do... I think the DS3 with the 110 bhp I drove in Germany had similarly sized alloy wheels, but I didn't notice the problems with handling or tram lining which you did. I reckon a Mark VII Fiesta does drive a bit better, but this isn't too bad at all, actually, it just needs a bit of a more powerful engine and a six speed gearbox.
@owensteele1645
@owensteele1645 2 года назад
A friend of mine had a Sport Red 155 Sport+. A '12-plate so it had the early rear lights and orange displays. I once borrowed it for a work trip, and I found it lovely on the motorway, in 6th gear 70 mph was at a very low 2250 rpm or something and it was very economical and refined. It did have a hard ride though.
@markonmotoring
@markonmotoring 2 года назад
@@owensteele1645 It.madeva competent cruiser and I didn't have to much issue with ride quality on most roads, it was more of an issue in some B roads where the ride was a bit jiggly and if there were any undulations or ruts it was prone to tram lining. It was a bit skittish too if pushed hard. It definitely felt a class above though in many ways.

Always liked the look of the DS3, it still looks modern. I nearly bought one last year but Covid restrictions stopped me from testing one. Would get the 1.2 110 bhp in Prestige spec.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 2 года назад
Yes, this 82 bhp engine is a bit underpowered and only has a five speed gearbox, so I would recommend the 110 bhp if possible. The Prince engines are best avoided (why am I even talking about them)?

Glad to hear that the DS3 has a feeling of solidity while using the 208 platform, a great combination. If it is anywhere near to the quality of the R56 MINI then it is top notch. Personally I didn't get the Shark Fin either but it obviously had some styling significance. Good engine.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 2 года назад
It's very, very good considering how awful things like a Mark I C3 and a Peugeot 207 are. The 208 I tested in 2020 was also quite a good car. The Puretech 110 bhp is an excellent engine, the Prince units... Well, we don't talk about those on this channel!

@@lloydvehicleconsulting I never mentioned my Wife's Engine, my good friend. Sadly I was commuting in the MINI this week. I arrived at work this morning and parked beside my colleague's 2007 Vauxhall Astra 3 door. He had left his Map light on so I tried the Astra door, it was unlocked. So as I switched off the Astra Map light the wind caught the door and struck the MINI driver's door. I had to confess to my Lady Wife tonight and, thankfully, she did not get angry but she would have had good cause. Why does the Good Samaritan get kicked trying to help ?

I learnt to drive in one of these, though it was a 2011 1.6 THP DSport Plus. They are nice cars to drive, roughly the size of a Mk6 Fiesta. My biggest complaint was the ride comfort because of the lower suspension and large wheels.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 2 года назад
Ah yes, we had better not talk about the engine in it in that case... I was surprised how nice the 110 bhp Automatic was I drove in Germany in 2016 was to drive. It was stable at over 100 mph on derestricted sections of the Autobahn! The ride in this Chic model was quite good thanks to those taller profile tyres.

Looks like a nice small car. I see in typical Citroen fashion, many pieces of trim have fallen off.

I think they were just doing some investigative work on ahead of the MOT/Service, and it is going to be put back together properly when it is prepared for sale.

I do agree that there is a bit too much black, making the vehicle very dark. I do like its styling, especially the rear windows. Funny, no Citroën badging! And I wonder what the Givenchy edition would included? Another excellent review, thank you very much!
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 2 года назад
Yes, Citroen removed their name from the car the year before this was made, creating the DS Automobiles marque. A lot of people did like the styling at the time. Not sure what extra stuff the Givenchy Edition got, I am afraid... More to come from Langley Prestige later this week!

Ewww not a Prince engine 😂. My sister's 1.6 vti started burning oil at 13,000, sounds like a diesel and drinks too much petrol. Best thing PSA did was develop the puretech engines 👍.

You do seem to have found quite a lot of evidence for it! Lots of the trim levels wouldn't necessarily appeal the chaps, I reckon....
@CortinasAndClassics
@CortinasAndClassics 2 года назад
I prefer the styling of this car over the designs now. The sport version they had on top gear looked cool apart from looking like a shoe. The interior is way too dark and no CD player. There are way too many trim levels my word :O
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 2 года назад
It is telling that when the DS3 was discontinued in 2019, there was no direct replacement. Instead, they went straight to an SUV, the similarly named DS3 Crossback, with which it shares some styling elements and some engines, but is otherwise much more expensive and larger. The one on Top Gear was the DS3 Racing, I think. You are right, very dark inside and quite poorly equipped on this "Chic" model. I wonder what the "Ines de la Fressange" model actually had over the "Chic"?
