Jim Snyder rediscovers the 1976 movie "Midway" and its audio process "Sensurround", that featured in some theaters as many as twenty 18" Cerwin-Vega Model 189 ES woofer drivers. Watch the movie on RU-vid • Video
July 12th 1977 I saw Rollercoaster in Sensurround. What I remember was my whole body shaking during the coaster rides, and crashes. There wasnt much in the film to use the effect, but when it came it was certainly impressive.
For the Chicago showing of Earthquake (and maybe other cities) the studio PR conned the city building inspection department to come out and confirm that the showing was safe and would not damage the theater, which had the intended effect of getting free newspaper space. 😆 I suspect the LA stories were equally "fact" based.
I was once talking to a man, now retired, who had been the projectionist at the Odeon Theatre ( in Leicester Square, London ) for over 40 years. We were talking about all the films he must have seen in that 40 years and we got round to talking abot Earthquake- in sensurround. He told me that Earthquake did not do the full run at the Odeon, Leicester Sq as they were instructed to pull it as the senssuround effect was causing damage to the London Underground System (or Subway in the US) underneath Leicester square.
earthquake 70mm , bournemouth , abc screen 1 saw 5 times no issues with hearing , battlestar galatica same cinema , end up with tinnitus auguest 1979 . the sensurround was more intense use than earthquake and both are around same running time , also where i was sat lower stalls , rather than circle which is few meters back , i could be just wrong seat where SPL dB was bit more louder i could sense a low frequency pressure air wave like moving forwards/backwards when those vipers launched it was big sound bass that was felt for 79p , unlike atmos lousy sounding and costs £18 at bh2 odeon bournemouth and sounds deafening in screen 10 , have to wear earplugs and bass is lousy , good speakers JBL just lousy set up
