This is a monthly test of Pike County's Weather Warning System. Tests are usually conducted on the first Friday of the month at 12 Noon EST (11:00 CST). With the exclusion of Petersburg's three Whelen 2750s, sirens in Pike County are controlled by the Sheriff's Department.
This particular siren is located on E. Union St. & East St. at a fenced-in area with a bunch of satellite equipment. It is very new and was installed just last summer around late July, and early August. Pike county recently received a grant which allowed them to purchase and install weather sirens in smaller communities such as Winslow. This siren also indirectly replaced an old Sterling 16/16 port M-10 located near the water treatment plant ,however, the M-10 still works and is used as a "back-up" siren. It is independently operated and is NOT part of any system. In-fact, the 16V1T-B was never actually intended to replace the siren, it's just that Winslow was on that list of smaller communities that needed a siren.
Compared to the other 16V1T-B I've heard in Otwell, the motors on this siren are actually quite synced with each other. The siren itself was not very loud, but the tone carries VERY far. I've heard one (not in this video but on my previous ambience video) a little less than a mile away yet the tone was extremely clear. Also while I was out recording (before test) a man came out of his porch and stared me down the whole time until a little after the end of the test. He didn't seem like he wanted trouble but he was obviously very curious as to what I was doing. He went back inside shortly after the test. I saw him glance at the siren a couple times so he probably thought that I was helping the EMA or something. It was pretty funny actually especially when I'd look back at him but you would have to be there to get the full experience of how awkward it really was. Again a big thanks goes to "TheWeatherGuys" for helping decide what to record.
