@Vlodec Uh, no. In fact there is a qualitative difference in the way the country was run fifty years ago, forty years ago, even five years ago, compared to now. My point was specific and focussed on the executive seat of the USA, and to overgeneralize and exaggerate that is called, I'm sure you are aware, the fallacy of slippery slope. Learn something from people who have seen more, lived longer than you. And then in your turn you can pass on your experience and awareness to others -- I hope you are listened to better than you listen to others who may or may not agree with you, apparently you wouldn't even know.
An absolute treasure, this movie is. I had a friend tape it for me when in was telecast by HBO years ago. I still have it and LOVE it. Definitely rate it over the BBC version with Eric Porter or the David Niven movie from 1958, both of which are IMO quite good too, but this version is in a class by itself...
YES, I agree and I HOPE someone adds part two -it is even better, much better. I have the movie on vhs that I bought 30 years ago, with of course both parts one and two. I no longer have a vcr for the vhs tape, only a dvd player and I have not been able to find this movie on dvd. I met Julie Christie back in 2003 and I told her I loved her work in this small independent British film, for which she and Bates received television award acting performance nominations back 35 years ago. Tony award winner Irene Worth is great -Mrs. Raltenball-in part two she plays the mother of Julie Christie's part two character Sybil
I have both parts one and two on a VHS tape cassette from the mid 1980's but it is not available on dvd. I found a video movie co in Hollywood that told me they could put my vhs copy onto a dvd
This is only part one of a two part movie, only the first half. I have the VHS version, however presently sans a vcr vhs machine, only a dvd player and the movie is apparently not available on dvd. I HOPE someone could put part two on the you tube. The same actors, some playing the same character, ie Claire Bloom continues as MsCooper, Irene Worth is Mrs.Raltenbal and she plays the mother of Sybil(a shy spinster played by Julie Christie) and the late Alan Bates plays a disgraced older ex military guy. I give part one a 9 out of 10. However the part two, which appears to not be on you tube yet, I rate as a 10 out of 10. If you liked part one you will love part two. The actors Christie and Bates received television award nominations for their acting performances in this two part film, directed by the late great John Schlesinger
I very much wish someone would you tube post the part two of this movie, same cast, with Christie playing a different character, Sybil, a very shy wallflower living with her mother played by Irene Worth (who plays the same character as she did in part one, Mrs. Raltonbon (spell?). Imo the part one is very good and part two is excellent with great acting from Julie Christie, Alan Bates(oh he plays a different character too, in part 2), Irene Worth and Claire Bloom.
Those were the days - A Quality Performance!! If you care about good direction and acting you'd appreciate this performance - If it's a fairy tale you're expecting .... you're in for a disappointment I'm afraid.
Refreshing! The days of quality over quantity are long gone, sadly. Still, if a man hits me once, gives me 8 stitches in the head, why wld I ever want to see him twice so he can assault me again? Love is an action not a thing. Bt great drama
The actress with the newspaper at 4.56 must be the batty old dear in The Vicar of Dibley. The maid/waitress at 4.59 is the irascible old girl in Last of the Summer Wine
@@carolthomas8528 How so, Thommo ? Are you disputing that "the old dear" character in the Vicar of Dibley is "batty" ? If so, perhaps you would enjoy scoffing down her Marmite-topped tea-cakes and beetroot fritters.
@@hingerty3046 I have part one and part two, the full movie on vhs, however my vcr is not working, I hope the entire movie parts one and two are put on dvd to purchase ie amazon or someone kindly you tubes part two, which imo is even better than part one. If this Schlesinger film had shown in cinema I would expect Julie Christie and Alan Bates to have gotten Academy nominations, they did get tv movie award nominations. Claire Bloom and Irene Worth (an American actress who went on to win a Tony award a few years later, best supporting actress in a Broadway play, Lost in Yonkers) are also excellent in both parts, and again even better in part two
Looks like a woman got pregnant that night at the inn. 9 mths. plus the child looks nine mths old too. I can't make out if it's the owner of the inn or the couple we saw at the start, they left for to their room. Wonder what happened to the main couple (the blonde ex) as this mother is a brunette.
You can't give up something you are not on DRUGS i didnt say iwas on drugs other people that say this and I'm not a lier john (Alan bates ) why do you drink so much drink is a drug why don't you give up the drink and violence john verbally and physically towards a woman Ann .(julie christie) Never call me a lier john (Allen bates ) .your not my doctor You don't have a clue
Would have been fun to have had BasilFawlty coping with these old ladies and Kathy Staff’s character instead of Manuel ! ( yes,~I know different times different authors)
@@clarequilty4962 I disagree - no one could match Rita Hayworth, and she got even better with age. I think the story is terribly dated - in the movie we are invited to feel sorry for the David Niven character, who it is made clear is a sexual predator who preys on young girls in cinemas. Beggars belief today!
@@Baskerville22 His illegal sexual activities in cinemas are made clear enough! That he is a sex offender is absolutely central to the character's story, there's no ambiguity about it. He is disgraced in society, because of it. But because of the culture of the times, the screenplay did not condemn him for stalking random females, but instead presented him to the audience as a sympathetic character, to be empathised with, even pitied. A predatory sex offender would never be written in such a romantic way in a drama today, thank God.
@@glamdolly30 Don't be shy. Tell me what act he committed in the cinema ? OR is it all just in your fevered imagination ? Was he charged by the Police for some form of law-breaking ?
so 80s - watching older movies I see the difference even from then to this time period - but still, still human and literate - today dystopic satanic trash. What is the familiar piano piece - I should know it but escaping me.
Well I've just sat through 58 minutes of complete boredom only to find that there is no PART 2. Why would you post just half a production??? Thumbs down from me.
@@moomoo2781 Apparently I have to click on Newest First to get ALL the recent messages. Anyway, I find I have to subscribe and download the versions being posted by other people - which I am not prepared to do - but have found a 1970 version of this which is every bit as good and IS COMPLETE.
Nothing compared with the Lancaster version. Just doesn’t have the visceral verve of the Hollywood treatment Rattigan provided for the film. A pale comparison.
I agree. Burt Lancaster, David Niven, Deborah Kerr,, Wendy Hiller, Gladys Cooper, Felix Aylmer, RodTaylor, and Rita Hayworth. What a cast, and what a great film it is.
