In this deeply moving feature-length documentary, three sisters and a brother meet for the first time. Removed from their young Dene mother during the infamous Sixties Scoop, they were separated as infants and adopted into families across North America.
Betty Ann, Esther, Rosalie, and Ben were only four of the 20,000 Indigenous Canadian children taken from their families between 1955 and 1985, to be either adopted into white families or live in foster care. As the four siblings piece together their shared history, their connection deepens, and their family begins to take shape.

One of the 60s scoop children grew up in our community in Ontario, a friend and classmate of my 3 sons. This young man was forever scarred by living outside his cultural roots and always knew deep in his heart that he didn't fit! He became an alcoholic, was in a serious accident in his late teens that left him a quadriplegic, and died 7 years ago. A tragic outcome of our Canadian government attempting to take the Indian out of an Indian!! It is small comfort to know that some attempts have been made to offer an apology, but his life was filled with misery. The family in this story epitomizes forgiveness at its best! Thanks for yor deeply heartwarming story. I hope the reunions continue and bring you all much joy.

How about religion?! That’s the real culprit. You’re probably religious in one way or another, so easy to pretend there’s something more at play. No one believes their religion could ever be wrong. It’s still being done today, u don’t know history. Past & present

Enough with the "Racism/priveliged" bs. These people were adopted. It was at that point their race was separated from any privilege. Would their race be effected if they were adopted by white people? How about black people? No. They would still be the same race they were born with. Would they be priveleged? They got adopted, didnt they? What if they were adopted by whites? Or blacks? Or mixed? What if they chose to not do squat with their life after being priveleged? Would they still be priveleged living on the streets? What if they were adopted by bums but made something of themselves anyways? Would they be priveleged? Read my comment above. What I didnt mention because its not important was that she was a very dark skinned Hawiian. Adopted when my father was in the USMC stationed in Honolulu after WWII. She was only 3 months old. She grew up in a predominantly white neighborhood in Ca. And we heard it all. We also took pity on the ignorant. In the end, we all grew up the same. Same friends, same opportunities. Everything but the same cocoa butter. She married a short hungarian guy that was, and as far as I know, is deeply in love with her. I can honestly say she was my pops favorite, as he pampered her butt her whole life. There were no special priveliges from anyone else, nor privileges denied. Nobody cared if she was black, white, green or whatever. Just the very rare idiot that soon got the message from her friends. The "Racism/white priveleged" garbage is Marxist propaganda that you bought hook line and sinker. And the sooner you realize that, the picture will become a lot more clearer. I wish you well on it. I'd rather have more friends than enemies.

@@siggyretburns7523 agree; what is the endgame meant to be with all the promoted demonizing of folks with the racism label? I wish i knew the languages and culture of the old world. immigrants dropped that soon after getting off the boats (whether by pressure or voluntarily to fit in.) people have lived with the resulting emptiness and zero identity for decades, a century, or more, and especially after ww2 when communities (multi gen homes) were separated by pressure to move out of the cities (streetcars taken away - couldn't get around) and to follow jobs necessary to afford the cars now needed for transportation.

As an adopted person who will never have an opportunity to meet birth parents (I’m aware he died in a plane crash when I was about 9 and my bio-mother didn’t want to meet me then I learned she died at 70) despite the atrocities that fell on this family (and so many thousands of indigenous families) I’m so happy they found each other. They have a beautiful bond and respect for each other.

I have 9 children (same father) and while I made the choice to give my son up for his benefit (I was 16 and didn’t know how I could ever raise him) it broke my heart. Can’t imagine how bad it must have been for there mother. While I am luck that my son contacted me when he had his first child I still think that every child deserves to know as much as possible about there biological parents.

My parents wouldnt stand in the way of my sister, if she chose to research it. It wouldnt have hurt them, I dont think. But she never even considered it. She was a sister to me and my brothers, and they felt the same...except for one brother. Ironically none of my other siblings consider him a brother. 😂 She passed way too early. It broke all of our hearts. Of all the peeps in my family, we were the compatible ones. Anyone that ever met her loved her. She was that sweet.

so you know what happened to Maori and Indigenous Australians then, and the residential homes set up all across australia and nz, strapped from speaking there own languages, YES definitely INHUMANE practices. The rabbit proof fence was a good documentary highlighting this. Maori had tribunals hearings throughout the country, with huge payouts for some tribes, which is a good start for the healing process to begin.

I kind of fell in love with you all watching this, including your mother whose presence you made tangible. Your account resonated with me and affirmed some of my own cultural turmoil as a result of having a mother who narrowly survived WWII Germany. Just as military wars don't end when the bullets stop, psychological and social destruction reverberates for generations to come. I think we need to recognise that there are many Holocausts, many of them seemingly quiet and mainstream. It's not just governments who have to stop doing these things: each of us has a personal responsibility to examine our unconscious biases, the most insidious way we propagate inequality. This is one of the best documentaries I've had the privilege to view (twice now). Thank you lovely Betty Ann, Esther, Rose and Ben, for sharing the most intimate details of your family story and well done to all those involved in the making of this testimony.

I'm so glad to see such a beautiful 1st-union! I'm always so appalled to see racism. I'm white, but could never fathom why people hate others different from themselves. Born in Nova Scotia, Canada, my mother was the oldest of 11 kids when her mother died in childbirth. After that, my mother went to live with an aunt, thereby losing her family along with her mother. When she was 18, my mother became a nun, one of the few choices for women back then. Times changed, and she realized she didn't have to hide any longer and suffer the demands of the Catholic church. One of her tasks while in service to God was to iron all the clothing worn by the other sisters. This life was too much after awhile, and she asked to leave. Then my father found her after WWII, and they had a family of 5 children in the USA. But one thing that always bothered me about her time in the convent was that she was a teacher. This meant that she would have taught the First Nation children their studies. For her part in this, I apologize. I know she didn't have malice, and she was a very kind person, so she would have treated the children well. But, it hurts to know she was on the wrong side of an effort. I know she was in that position due to circumstances, and had to comply with expectations. Personally, I deeply respect the First Nation people, and I wish you the best.❤❤❤❤🙏🙏🏾🙏🙏🏾😑🌏🌍🌎🤲🦋🍁🐎🦌 This video was very, very good. It was important, and meaningful for me to see. I ❤ their laughter! I pray for you and your extended family's. What really makes me angry is who thought they had the right to do this? I saw a documentary and read some stories online about a man who was in a residential school. Queen Elizabeth had her people go to Canada (not sure if she was there?), pick up 10 children, take them for some special event where they were on show, BUT AFTERWARDS THEY WERE NEVER SEEN AGAIN, HEARD FROM, NOT ONE CHILD RETURNED, *ALL* OF THE CHILDREN DISAPPEARED! The man interviewed said his friend's were killed after the special event. He was harassed for telling his story but he never gave up trying to find out exactly what happened before he died other than the little amount he found out. His story was supposedly debunked and claimed as false because there was no evidence supporting his story. I've told friends of 38 years (now former friend's, my landlord's) something 6½ weeks ago about trespasser's outside of my bedroom windows near every night since November 17th. They've said that my meds are making me see things, I'm creating drama to get attention and that I'm lying. They've convinced our sheriff's deputy's that their opinion is the truth when they have no basis, no evidence, they don't know what meds I'm on nor do they know all of my diagnoses, they're not licensed physician's. JUST BECAUSE PEOPLE DON'T BELIEVE YOU, THAT THEY MAKE EVERYTHING APPEAR THAT YOU'RE CRAZY AND LYING DOESN'T MEAN IT NEVER HAPPENED, IT'S NOT HAPPENING CURRENTLY. JUST BECAUSE THERE IS NO EVIDENCE DOESN'T MEAN THAT THEY'RE RIGHT! My point is that thing's happen that cannot be explained, many times no reasons can be found for the choices other's make that DEVASTATES our lives and many times no evidence is found to support our truths. BUT THE TRUTH HAS TO BE TOLD ANYWAY!!! I'm so glad you found each other! I'm sorry that this happened to you and your family! The people who've done these things and the people who've not believed us and said we lied - they'll be judged for it all when they die and stand before our creator. That's the only way I can go on. I know the value of the truth. Keep loving each other now that you've been reunited. I pray that it comforts you all and allows you to heal a lot. Love and hugz to you 4 as well as anyone who reads this. Tree

That anyone in this day & age would be so insensitive as to suggest to you that it was a good thing is beyond my comprehension. Thankyou ❤🧡💛💚

This is an excellent documentary. So sad yet also celebratory. We, my Australian Aboriginal people have the same the same ame story. Our Australian government also apologised. Too little too late. The damage is done. Those children who were taken away, we refer to as Stolen Generations. Stripped of their families, language and culture.

I was never told about that, only becoming to understand the impact as an adult. I'm a immigrant to Australia and I feel lied to through my whole education by successive governments. Only through adult education and a willingness to listen to such stories can we ever hope to effect real change

Absolutely too little too late on behalf of our Governments apology to our stolen generation. The Federal education minister is still trying to block this history from being taught in Australian schools. As parents it's up to us to teach our children the history of our First nations people as our Governments, both state and federal are too piss weak to do it!

But it is inferred in the doc that the mother Mary Jean did not have First Nation partners.....so we can assume the fathers may have been white. So did not these children live and learn the culture of their fathers? It is indeed horrible that they were stolen from their mother....but they still learned and lived in the culture of their father of which they have 50% of that blood.

@@RMBlake007 sure but they have tried to erase the other 50% they hid it from these children and separated them from their family that the ties to the indigenous 50% were completely lost. That there was shame in being indigenous. That’s where you are wrong it’s more complex than that they were raised in a different culture. They weren’t even with their family they were with Foster parents a very unstable situation for most people. It’s just so sad and disgusting that these governments did this.

Mary Jane is smiling down on her wonderful children, no doubt. All the while thumbing her nose at the Canadian government. It is so nice to see them all together. =) There is nothing better than a wax glazed cake! OMG I was rolling.

I hope they keep each other in contact. This is heartbreaking 💔 They this in Chile in the 60 and 70’s too. They told to the poor families the babies were born dead and they stole the babies and place them in adoptive parents in Europe and here in The USA. Evil and Cruelty to the core!!🥺😢

Everyone needs to watch this. When they meet the elder I was just so emotional. It is so wrong what we have done in America and Canada to native people. To think that they were just assimilated into white culture and deprived of their roots is just infuriating. They all handle this experience with such grace and humor.

Very eye opening, and we here in the States are just as at fault for the treatment our government did as well in the past. As a white man, its hard to burden a guilt of something I wasn't a part of, but I agree with the many different peoples of race that were mistreated. Also, I believe there were many white people who didn't agree with this "policy" of evil. I hope this is also considered. The best avenue going forward is admittance by our current leaders and forgiveness from our fellow citizens that were affected. I truly believe that is what our Creator wants. The struggle I saw that is heartbreaking is four siblings trying to bond after being complete strangers. Each were raised by different families and were nurtured and natured differently and have a bond with their adoptive families through experience. I can't imagine what it must be like to have to learn that sibling bond with new people in my life. The hope of bonding must start with their mom as the basis and go from there. I'm glad they found each other so the healing can begin. I'd like to see a follow up.

This is heartbreaking to see your your babies just taken away because they one felt that you’re not capable to handle your children to raise them. However, this is happy sweet reunion if there was a way to write the wrong it would have all they have to do move forward with respect.

I’m sure there are many family stories like yours, some of which were very sad in the loss of children. I hear of so many deaths at the schools and abuse too. I support a school in South Dakota a little. The kids seem happy but who knows ?

I have three adopted siblings- one sister close to my age (in our 60s) and two younger brothers, ten years younger. I helped raise the two younger brothers who are First Nation. My sister is not First Nation. All three suffered equally, it seems, from adoption. My sister's parents were unwed and gave her up to protect the family honor. She has just reconnected with some of the siblings in recent years; her birth parents were already deceased. One of my First Nation brother's mother died when he was just a baby, and there was no one to care for him. He connected with his birth family. The other brother is not making a great effort to connect, although I encourage it. Both of them have embraced friends of every culture which is beautiful. However, years ago, when I became an adult, I felt incredible guilt for our family taking my two brothers away from their FN culture. My parents only requested children, not children of any specific ethnic group, so this is not something I feel that my parents can truly bear responsibility for. We just loved them. In fact, I loved them so much that I was willing to give up having my own children just to protect my younger brothers. Not realistic, but real love knows no race or ethnicity. There is no way to undo the wrong that was done to so many innocent children, including my sister, who was given up just to protect the honor of the families of her unmarried parents. This is a very miserable part of our historic past that cannot be undone, but the government needs to do all that it can to reunite siblings separated by adoption. We need to see that the needs of the children come first.

You can take the Indian child from their culture. But you can NEVER take the culture from the Indian child. We see that here. I'm so glad they were blessed to meet and be with each other. Hopefully we can get updates to see how their families all come together. Because I believe everyone who has watched and will watch this has welcomed them into our own families. Plus Ben is absolutely hilarious and I can't wait to see more of him with his beautiful sisters.
