As difficult species go, the Long and Short-eared Owl pairing are amongst the most challenging to identify, especially in flight. The latest identification video from the BTO offers tips on how to separate both, in flight, perched and by calls.

Could have done with more sounds and calls as the chances of ever seeing these owls in the wild are virtually zero. The most common way to know of the presence of an owl is to hear them after dark or just before dawn.

Thank you for your feedback. More info about owls can be found at www.bto.org/our-science/projects/project-owl/learn-about-owls, including calls. I hope that helps.

Chances of seeing them is definitely not zero. I've just seen a short-eared owl on the coast in North Norfolk in late afternoon daylight.

Does the long-eared owl make another sound, like a very sharp call? We leave at the edge of a mountain town, and behind us there are some fir trees. We are lucky to host a family of long eared owls. I think those are the females that make that sharp almost like a barn owl sound. In our language, they are named ”ciuf de pădure”, which means a disheveled/ruffled from forest. The short-eared are named ”ciuf de câmp”, which means a disheveled/ruffled from field.

Cute birds. Thank you, very informative. I thought only two species made the hoot sound, american great horned owls and eagle owls found in europe and the Asian countries tried to africa. Each has a distinctive and obvious hoot. The long eared has his own unique sound, so I guess there are now 3 owls that hoot. Oddly enough they're similar in that they're all ' horned' owls with similar colouring with the long eared having the squarest shape of adorable face!

Tawny Owls in Europe also hoot quite distinctively.

Both short eared and long eared owls, are medium-sized birds with the same body size as a Barn Owl and both of them with significant longer wings

The simplest and most reliable way to distinguish long-eared owls and short-eared owls is that long-eared owls tend to have decidedly long ears, while short-eared owls have rather shorter ears.

I thought this video was about physically separating them! I was thinking crikey, you mean they fight or get too close in the wild?🧐

Long-eared Owls look more like Great Horned owls.

Great Horned Owl is an American species - we cover UK species. Mind you, both Short-eared and Long-eared Owls do also occur in the States and Canada. Great Horned Owl is MUCh bigger and heavier, and is much more close to European Eagle Owl than either of these two species.

@@henzcarltupas328henzcarltu2 they are one of the easiest owls to see in the day. They are most active at morning and dusk, but they also active at night sometimes. You can also see them throughout the day. If you go to the right habitat in the evening, you will probably see one.

@@coltrv Short eared owls hunt mainly during the dark after dusk by sunset, they prey on rodents like rats and mice by pouncing them with their eagle like talon's. But after preying, owls return to their roosting place to sleep for the rest of the midnight before dawn breaks.
