You realise how much you depend on a certain amount of solar generation when one of your systems is not working. It's been a poor solar month for us. How have you all got on?

Thanks for your video yes September solar was a lot less we only got 562 kWh from our near west 6.2 kW solar and export dropped a lot too but only imported 3.3 kWh from the grid so that was good too but expected this to go up a lot this month. Take care and safe travels everyone

@@johntisbury lowest import we had in near 21 months and about 11500 kWh generation in less than 21 months in less than idea position especially in low sun months due to shading issues so quite happy with system performance it’s very helpful with current energy prices no wonder why so many people looking to get solar or add battery storage. But I still see people say solar and battery storage not worth the money etc we need more people to see videos and stats from real owners to show them they can and do work in uk ! 7kWh array in Cambridgeshire. After 3 months at 900+ we got 597kW total for September. But it's been much more overcast. The batteries are drawing more off peak at night now (set to 70% charge at night for convenience) as they don't always end the solar day at 100% any more.

Septembers Spalding Lincs stats. Consumed 283 kWh electricity, 4.3 array produced 377.5 kWh first time in five months it’s below 500 kWh. 2.7 kWh grid draw to house, 19.6 to car. 104.8 to grid, 108 kWh to car via Zappi. Best day production 17th 22, worst 30th 2.9. Self powered 93% Last year our combined system managed 4024 kWh for the full 12 months. Today we clicked over to 4014 kWh for the year so far, that shows what a great solar year we are currently having, fingers crossed it continues.

Imported 232 kwh, exported 153 kwh, diverted 104 kwh into the immersion & a heater. Up in Lincoln area, my E/W Solar PV of 7.56kWh gave me 498.9kWh for September. A very small reduction from last September. Tesla Energy Plan is still running well. Solar export was 164.6kWh but the Powerwall delivers about 10kWh to the grid evry day, between 4 and 7pm, meaning our net grid use was 483.4kWh. Our electric use now covers our EV (that used 168kwh), all home and cooking use as well as ASHP. For the 6 months between 1st April when heating was still on, to end of September, the ASHP used 210kWh for Heating and 202kWh for Hot Water. It is just coming up time to make use of this, so I will be able to add some useage figure over the next few months.

@@johntisbury you can use up to 9kWp of solar panels per Powerwall 2 and the only limit is on daytime energy use from 0700 to 1930 must be less than 9500kWh per Powerwall installed: This is only for energy imported from the grid and due to solar we have not used much during the daytime since we got onto the plan.

Hi John, thanks for the video. I managed 407kwh on a 4.75kw array via a 3.68kw inverter, quite a drop from previous months this year. I had an issue with my incoming mains cable, ended up on a 100amp generator for a few hours overnight. Lesson learned is turn off the solar and powerwall as it's not the grid and cannot accept the momentary exports that occur as power draw from powerwall fluctuates. No drama, just frequent messages in the app saying grid down. Could I ask why you moved gas tarrif and your expected savings? Have you considered getting James from Cleveley to service your cars? By all accounts he really knows his stuff, just a thought. What components are you using to get all the temperature and humidity readings on HA? I have been using my Tado trvs, but they are not everywhere and as low down don't give the best readings. Thanks John, enjoy the weekend.

@johntisbury Год назад
Thanks for watching and your stats. Hopefully I've answered your questions below: Could I ask why you moved gas tarrif and your expected savings? The Flexible tariff we were on was destined to change October 1st, so jumped before the 16p/kWh cap was increased to 22p onto the Gas tracker tariff. Not 100% sure if that's the best option, time will tell, however it seemed to be the lesser of two evils. Have you considered getting James from Cleveley to service your cars? By all accounts he really knows his stuff, just a thought. Yes I have. He is on my to contact and arrange a service list. What components are you using to get all the temperature and humidity readings on HA? As per the video, the SONOFF zigbee temp and humidity sensors are in each room. Connected to a Sonoff zigbee dongle 3 in the back of the Home Assistant Blue box I have, via a 3m USB extension cable. That's it.

Hi John How do you stop the power wall discharging into the car? I have set it to time based control & it still discharged into the car, plus didn’t full charge at the off peak rate as I knew we needed 100% charge due to no solar today. Thanks
@johntisbury
@johntisbury Год назад
You can't stop it, your car charger will see it as available power and will use it. Time Based Control or Self Powered has no impact on whether it discharges to the car or not. Overnight off-peak charging amount is based on lots of factors. The key thing to make this work is to plug in your 'Utility Rate Plan' tariff rate so the Powerwall knows when it peak and off peak. I also recommend using the Super Off-Peak option for cheap rate and Peak rate as normal. Under sell put as lower figure you can, mine is 0.01p. Then under the Time-Based option choose Yes to Grid Charging question at the bottom of that screen. It takes a while for it to settle down and get into a rhythm. People that ping pong backwards and forwards between Time Base Control and Self Powered suffer from inconsistent results. Our Powerwall has been charging to 100% overnight since we swapped to Time Based Control at the end of September. It takes into account the amount of house usage each day, the amount of solar generated, any export to the grid, solar forecast. If there's lots of reserve left in the battery at the end of the day then it can often not charge to 100% overnight. Same too with exporting solar to the grid, that will trigger it not to charge to 100% overnight. As I say there are many factors it takes into account.
@philmorgan236
@philmorgan236 Год назад
@@johntisbury thanks, what % do you set your backup reserve? Just changed changed the plan to what you suggested, problem may have been that since I had the solar installed I haven’t needed to pull from e grid, this is the only day I have had to import.

Hi John. Do you use the Tesla app to charge the battery during off peak? My system 7kw solar, powerwall and zappi all installed mid Sept 2022. Since installation Ive been using the self-powered option on the Tesla app and the solar has been enough to keep the battery charged overnight then pick up solar the next day. After a couple of cloudy days I wanted to charge the battery during off-peak so swapped to the time-based option. That didn't work so I called Tesla today. They helped me but later today I wanted to use the eco++ on the Zappi to trickle charge the car as it was really fine afternoon and it started to pull 3kwh from the battery even though I had the excess 1.4kwh needed to use 'surplus' required by the Zappi. I feel another call to Tesla is needed but wanted to check your app set-up. thanks Gary
@johntisbury
@johntisbury Год назад
Hi Gary. Yes I use the Time-Based Control (rather than Self-Powered) this time of year. The key thing to make this work is to plug in your 'Utility Rate Plan' tariff rates so the Powerwall knows when it peak and off peak. I also recommend using the Super Off-Peak option for cheap rate and Peak rate as normal. Then under the Time-Based option choose Yes to Grid Charging question at the bottom of that screen. For the battery question, you need to set the zappi to avoid battery discharge in the menu. You'll need to check the manual for what menu option it is on. It does not always work, however more often than not it will and should use excess solar and not hit the battery. The zappi does not know you have a battery, it just sees excess power (eg non-grid) and will use it unless you tell it otherwise.
@garyogden5873
@garyogden5873 Год назад
@@johntisbury Thanks John. I ended up having a second call with Tesla support today and they made some changes. Apparently they don't want a sell price above £0.03p. I also wasn't aware about that because I was toggling between Self-powered and Time-based that you can actually confuse the Powerwall and that it just won't charge to 100% during low tariff but take impending solar production the following day and the only charge what it believes will be needed. I was using my weather app to toggle between the 2 settings. I knew very little about the various settings because I want told at commissioning and there isn't anything simple to read to understand them!
@johntisbury
@johntisbury Год назад
Ah glad to hear things are sorted. I change twice a year between self-powered (Spring/Summer) and Time Based Control (Autumn/Winter). People I know leave it in Time Based Control all year. The algorithm does get confused if you bounce back and forth in consecutive days as it does not build up a picture of usage and patterns.
@garyogden5873
@garyogden5873 Год назад
@@johntisbury Thanks John. One thing I forgot to ask the Tesla support this morning and that was whether I need to adjust the backup (green figures) up from my usual 20%? With Grid charging enabled it says "Powerwall will use the grid to charge to your backup reserve" But I'm guessing its the figure in blue Time-based control which I have set to 80%. That said she did say the algorithm might, based on weather prediction/likely solar production not even reach 80%
@johntisbury
@johntisbury Год назад
You don't really need to adjust the backup % unless you feel that power outages are imminent. I have the Gateway 1 so don't have functionality to have a reserve backup. Yes the algorithm will not always charge to 100% from the grid at off peak as it takes lots of factors into account.
