SEPTA Rt. 15 featuring the PCC II streetcar ~ Philadelphia, PA

Scenes along Septa's Route 15. It is the only trolley line that does not go through the subway. Septa uses their PCC II streetcars exclusively on this line. The PCC II is essentially a brand new streetcar using the bodies of the original PCC streetcars.

You are lucky to have these beautiful streetcars! They fit in well in the narrow streets of Philadelphia.

Wow, seeing those classy PCC cars all light up inside as it gets dark, something really magical about it. Nice to see that SEPTA has a solid herritage fleet plying the rails. PCC cars still look really flashy and modern, even though they’re decades upon decades old. I may be a sucker for old wooden cars, but I like PCCs a ton too.

Interesting that they went to the trouble to put turn signals and digital destination signs on the cars (like MBTA Type 8s, but these PCC IIs are far classier and almost certainly work a lot better), but then they seem to have left them with incandescent interior lights (unless those are actually really good LED imitations of incandescents). Anyway, they look great, and thanks for the video -- I have seen stills of them before, but this is the first video footage I have seen of them (and have yet to see them in person).

I operate an o gage three rail model railroad and have a model of the SEPTA PCC’s but in a different paint scheme. I live in the Philadelphia area and grew up riding these type of cars on the Rt. 34 trolley line. I also got to ride several of the other surface lines before they were converted to busses. It is nice to see one route get their trolleys back.

Fine camera work and subject/locations Mr. Demnyan. I love those PCC cars, and, that they have been rehabbed and put back into service. Philly seems to be one of the rare large cities who a dedicated to running the trolley lines as a serious part of its public transportation system. Others have some sort of trolley-like system in place, but those never really seem to be major transportation assets but are mostly used to move tourists around town to tourist places of interest. Many of those lines go belly up because they aren't taken seriously by locals and used for commuting or even getting around town. Glad Philly is doing this, and, I think in the future will be used as a boilerplate (example) for other metro areas when they start to install trolley lines for major transportation solutions.

it's actually cheaper to restore these than buy the new ugly ones. restored cost 500k new ones cost 1.5 mil.

Man i was going to say all other streetcar systems, mainly the cars are often better than my city's...But this one! haha. I joke of course. But i also remain grateful however lol. But DANG, we in Toronto stopped using those 50's style cars in like the 70s when the red ones took over. Now we were supposed to get a new fleet from bombardier, but they effed up the timeline of that order beyond belief and we've only had ONE new streetcar actually hit the streets on a short north/south line, the Spadina line. Cept I'n never there in that section of downtown, even though I'm always so close lol. So its been operating in my city for about 2 years and I still haven't ridden it yet haha. It's kind of one of those weird secrets about Toronto

I remember having my brother in law stop to see if I could get on one at a turnaround about 10 years ago. Unfortunately it was a charter. I guess right before they cut the PCC car lines off. This one sounds pretty loud.

Loved that shot at 4:24! That deserted alley with the trolley at sunset is amazing! Great video, and amazing shots. I imagine this system is some kind of heritage railway similar to the F line in San Francisco.
@trolleytravels
@trolleytravels 7 лет назад
Thanks for your kind words. Yes, the Rt 15 is something of heritage line - although as opposed to the F (and now E) Lines in San Francisco, this happened by default as Septa realized it was cheaper to rehab the old PCCs than purchase new vehicles.

Yeah, my family lived on Poplar Grove St. when I was born in 1950. The #15 went right by our house. I can still remember hearing the rumble of the streetcars and singing trolley wires while laying in bed at night. It was a sad day for me when they were replaced with bus lines near the end of 1963. I still have The Sunpapers article about the last day of service which I cut out and saved back then as a 13 year old.

Beautiful streetcars, and I'm glad they used the old bodies. One question: are they handicapped accessible, or does the ADA even apply in this case?

You can put money or a SEPTA coin in. You can also use a TrailPass (1 month pass for SEPTA). After those get phased out, you can use the SEPTA key card with money or a pass on it, and press it on to the reader in the trolley/tram. SEPTA is Southeast Pennsylvania Transportation Authority, and all I said is true for all SEPTA things, except that you use the methods described at the gate for the Subway (Metrô)
@TrainSounds
@TrainSounds 9 лет назад
The 15 is not the only one that doesn't go into the subway, the Route 101 and 102 don't either.
@trolleytravels
@trolleytravels 9 лет назад
+TrainSounds I know. 101 and 102 are the old Red Arrow Lines suburban lines. Plus, the "new" K Cars on that line use pantographs for power collection, so they're technically not "trolleys." Nor do they go through downtown Philly - they terminate at 69th Street Terminal.
@garysmith394
@garysmith394 5 лет назад
Routes 101 & 102 do not operate in the city and that is why they do not go into the subway.
@Ih8kone
@Ih8kone 8 месяцев назад
@@trolleytravelsThey are trolleys by SEPTA's standards, but they use pantographs because they are dual cab vehicles.

I hope you weren't the one who disliked my video because of your opinion... There are many who agree with you, but keep in mind 1.) I had nothing to do with Septa's decision (so why the dislike?) 2.) Many streetcar fans and public transit patrons wish there were at least some semblance of a streetcar system left in their hometowns, including mine. Be grateful for what you have - it's more than most cities offer.
