A couple of intershow breaks that ran between movies, plus a Feature Movie intro and nightly sign-off sequence from HBO, still using its overlapping letters logo and full "Home Box Office" name, if only for a few more months.
After the sign-off sequence, you'll hear a series of DTMF tones (similar to touch-tones on a phone) before the video goes to color bars. The tones were used by cable networks to trigger events such as local break inserts back at regional CATV headends in the 80s and 90s, before inaudible signals rendered them unnecessary.
HBO began a 24-hour schedule exactly one year later, on September 4, 1981. Originally on weekends only, round-the-clock programming was expanded to the rest of the week in December 1981.
Date recorded: Thursday, September 4, 1980

We didn't get Cable TV in Chicago until 1985. Good to know how Cable TV was back then.

Thank you for uploading this! I never get tired of seeing that iconic sign-off. Would you happen to remember what the last (PG) movie that aired was before going off the air that night?

I think it was Goldfinger, but I can't recall for sure.

Really cool and cozy sign off animation at the end! I forgot that TV stations used to do that. Came here after doing a search for DTMF tones on TV. I was reading on Wikipedia how some sketchy businesses operated by inducing children to hold up their phones to the TV so that DTMF tones could be played that would cause the phone to dial 900 numbers and rack up bills. I somehow got to your video. Does anyone know if that was true? I remember Nintendo Power magazine having a 1-900 number you could dial to get video game hints and tips -- luckily I never did that, or I'd not have been able to sit down for a week after my parents had gotten the phone bill! The beeps played at the end of the video kind of remind me of the tones you would hear when inserting some older VHS tapes, at the very, very beginning of the tape, like it was some form of tracking. Does anyone know what those were for, or even remember them? Any answers to either question would be great. (I was born Thanksgiving of 1989, so some things, like rotary phones, I was only able to experience in old movies.) Thanks again for the upload! -- Janis in St. Louis
