September fly fishing Montana is some of my favorite of the year. After a long summer and warmer water temps the rivers start to cool off and the fish get active again. With a number of rivers to consider... We always say... It gets better in September!
The Blackfoot River in September is quickly becoming my favorite place to be. River traffic is low, the scenery is amazing and the fishing is great! Dry flies and streamers are my favorite way to fish the Blackfoot in September.
The Clark Fork River is another solid choice in September. Bugs start to get active and the bigger fish of the year start to show up. Dry fly fishing is typically very productive, droppers fill in the gaps when they don't want the dry. Streamer fishing on the Clark Fork in September? It can be good and this year was some of the best I've seen in a long time.
Flathead River was really good this September. Dry Dropper was the ticket most days with an occasional day of nymphing un an indicator. Streamer fishing was good too. We did see some of the biggest fish of the year eat a streamer this fall.
